Bayannur is a Hetao Plain, Yellow River and wetland trip, not a dense city-break route. Linhe works well as the lodging and supply base, while Wuliangsuhai, the Yinshan Rock Paintings, the Hetao irrigation area, Urat grassland roads and the Ulan Buh Desert each need their own timing. The distances are long enough that a car, chartered driver or careful self-drive plan is more useful than a checklist.
Wetland, Rock Art and Grassland
Wuliangsuhai is the first anchor for many visitors. Go for open water, reeds, birds and the feeling of the Yellow River irrigation landscape, but stay inside managed areas. Birdwatching is about distance, quiet and patience. Do not enter reed beds, unmanaged banks or deep-water edges for a closer photo.
The Yinshan Rock Paintings add the human-history layer. Give them daylight, an explanation source and respect: do not touch, rub, climb around or use the rocks as photo props. If you continue toward Urat grassland or the Ulan Buh Desert, recheck wind, road surface, fuel and charging points. Border-area signs and facility-photo rules matter here.
How To Plan The Route
For one night, stay in Linhe and choose either Wuliangsuhai or a light Yellow River wetland route. For a weekend, put Wuliangsuhai on one day and the Yinshan Rock Paintings or a grassland direction on the second. If linking Baotou, Wuhai, Alxa or Ningxia, use Bayannur as a supply stop rather than forcing several remote landscapes into one day.
Food is simple and hearty: hand-grabbed lamb, braised noodles, Hetao wheat noodles, milk tea, sunflower seeds and local farm products. For meat, dairy and agricultural gifts, check packaging, cold-chain needs, date, weight and receipt. In spring and autumn, wind and dust can change the whole day; in winter, low temperature and road conditions deserve the same attention as the sights.
