Bayannur cannot be covered by radiating from Linhe to a wetland, rock-art valley, grassland and desert in one day. Wuliangsuhai lies toward Urat Front Banner. Yinshan rock art is scattered across a broad mountain zone, and many locations are not ordinary visitor sites. The Sanshenggong water-control works and the Ulan Buh Desert lie toward Dengkou. For a first visit, choose one main theme—Hetao wetland, Yinshan heritage or Yellow River and desert—before deciding whether to change hotels.
Choose One Main Route
- Hetao wetland route: Use Linhe District for transport and supplies, then visit a clearly open boardwalk, observation area, interpretation space or tourist pier at Wuliangsuhai. Remain outside reed beds and other protected habitat.
- Yinshan heritage route: Begin at the Inner Mongolia Hetao Culture Museum, then choose one rock-art site that publishes access, road and interpretation details. The Yinshan carvings are protected heritage, not a trail of unregulated photo pins.
- Yellow River and desert route: Base the day around Dengkou County and Sanshenggong. Add a licensed Ulan Buh Desert activity only if it is operating under suitable weather.
- A two-day first visit: Combine Linhe and Wuliangsuhai. For the second outward direction, choose either Yinshan heritage or Dengkou rather than making repeated cross-banner returns.
When to Go
Spring brings strong wind, dust and large day-to-night temperature changes. A Linhe museum day is the necessary alternative to exposed travel. Summer suits wetland and Hetao farming landscapes, but heat, thunderstorms, severe convection and insects affect comfort. Autumn can be good for fields, wetland and road scenery; harvest events and migrating birds still depend on current conditions. Winter travel requires checks for ice, heating, road safety and seasonal closures.
Water level, reed growth, bird presence, boat service and open areas at Wuliangsuhai change with season and conservation management. No month guarantees a flock or a sailing. Read Bayannur, banner-level, scenic-area and weather notices before leaving Linhe.
Linhe and Hetao Culture
Linhe District is the main base for Bayannur Station, Tianjitai Airport connections, accommodation, meals and vehicle arrangements. The Inner Mongolia Hetao Culture Museum explains Yellow River irrigation, Hetao agriculture, movement across the Yinshan Mountains and local life. Verify its opening day, reservation arrangements and temporary galleries.
Yellow River Bay Pedestrian Street and Hetao Intangible Cultural Heritage Town are activity-led spaces. Performances, markets and shuttles depend on the city calendar and the operator’s current programme. A Linhe culture day fits an arrival afternoon or a day of high wind.
Do not enter working fields, irrigation channels, pumping stations or villages without visitor facilities in search of an “authentic Hetao experience.” An agricultural or craft visit should identify its host, reception time and included fee.
Visiting Wuliangsuhai
Wuliangsuhai is an important wetland and waterbird habitat. Its travel value lies in open water, reeds, bird observation and the wider Hetao water system. Use only a boardwalk, observation point, interpretation area or tourist pier that is officially open that day. Before entry, establish the wind conditions, boat status and latest departure.
A long lens is safer than approaching a flock. Never feed birds, play calls to draw them closer or fly a drone over habitat. Reed beds, core protected areas, ice, aquaculture zones and unmanaged shores are not viewing positions.
If boats are operating, use the authorised pier and vessel. Check the route, duration, life jackets, wind threshold, sailing conditions and cancellation terms. Children need continuous close supervision around the lake, even from a platform.
Yinshan Rock Art and the Urat Direction
Yinshan rock art covers a wide area, and public access, roads, interpretation and conservation boundaries differ by site. Favour a museum, government-listed destination or scenic area with published reception. Do not follow a short-video coordinate into a ravine, mine, pastoral track or unmanaged mountainside.
Never touch, trace, rub or wet a carving to make it more visible. Camera bags and tripods also belong off the rock surface.
Travel toward the Urat grassland or border areas requires an additional check for border controls, nature reserves, mines and weak mobile coverage. Observe signs that restrict photography around ports, border facilities, energy sites, power infrastructure and water works. Cooperate with inspections and do not detour around a controlled road for a landscape photograph.
Dengkou, Sanshenggong and the Ulan Buh Edge
Dengkou County deserves a separate Yellow River and Ulan Buh Desert itinerary. Sanshenggong is a working water-control project as well as a visitor interest. Stay in public areas and keep out of gates, channels, construction and operational facilities.
Any desert drive, ride or camp should be supplied by an established operator. Confirm the vehicle, driver, route, protective equipment, insurance, rescue method and weather cancellation. A normal car must remain on surfaced public roads; an unmarked sand track is not a shortcut.
Do not assume Nalin Lake, Shahai Lake or a desert camp operates year-round. Strong wind, blowing sand, lightning or poor visibility ends the desert day and sends the route back to Dengkou or another serviced road point.
Workable Two- to Five-Day Plans
Two Days: Linhe and Wuliangsuhai
Arrive in Linhe on day one, visit the Inner Mongolia Hetao Culture Museum and organise supplies. On day two, use a confirmed open area at Wuliangsuhai and return to Linhe before evening. A closure at the wetland turns the day into Linhe culture and an accessible Yellow River public space.
Three Days: Add One Heritage Route
Follow the two-day plan, then use day three for one publicly accessible Yinshan rock-art site if the road and reception are clear. Otherwise, continue with rock-art and Hetao interpretation at museums rather than hiring an informal guide into the mountains.
Four Days: Add Dengkou
Spend day one in Linhe and day two at Wuliangsuhai. Transfer to Dengkou and stay there on day three. On day four, choose either the public part of Sanshenggong or one licensed Ulan Buh Desert activity. Do not return to the Urat direction that same day.
Five Days: Allow for Weather
Use day five to absorb dust, thunderstorms or transport changes. If roads and reception are clear, it can support a modest visit toward Wuyuan, Hanggin Rear Banner or one Hetao agricultural culture project. It should not become a border-grassland expedition.
Arriving and Traveling Between Counties
Bayannur Station is the principal railway arrival point for Linhe. Tianjitai Airport requires its own road transfer into the city. Before buying accommodation, place the station or airport, hotel, chosen Wuliangsuhai entrance and any banner destination on the same map. “Within Bayannur” does not mean a short urban ride.
County buses may not stop near the visitor entrance or return at a useful time. A hired-car agreement should name the vehicle and driver, route, daily distance, waiting, fuel or charging, driver accommodation, tolls, parking, weather diversion and cancellation. Restrict each day to one substantial outward route and reach a town before dark.
Where to Stay
- Linhe District: The broadest choice of transport, food and services. It suits the first night, a Wuliangsuhai day and transfers among several directions.
- Urat Front Banner town: Can support an early wetland visit, but the distance to the currently open Wuliangsuhai entrance must be checked.
- Dengkou County: The practical base for Sanshenggong and the Ulan Buh edge. Its supplies are more reliable than those of an unknown desert camp.
- Grassland or desert lodging: Use only an operator whose business identity, address, heating or air conditioning, bathroom, hot water, night staff, road access and cancellation are explicit.
“Lake view” and “star tent” describe marketing themes, not safe access. Ask about mobile coverage, night temperature, windblown sand and the final road before payment.
Food and Farm Purchases
Hetao noodles, braised noodles, lamb, milk tea, sunflower seeds and local fruit or vegetables are straightforward choices. Meat should be thoroughly cooked. Try a small amount of dairy first if digestion is uncertain, and respect the rules of halal restaurants.
Before ordering a large lamb or fish dish, establish the species or cut, weight, pricing unit, preparation and expected total. For flour, sunflower seeds, dairy or produce, inspect the producer information, packaging, weighing, storage, delivery and returns. Do not make a large roadside purchase based only on claims such as “natural,” “pasture-raised” or “organic.”
Bookings, Drivers and Paid Activities
The Inner Mongolia Hetao Culture Museum, Wuliangsuhai, rock-art sites, Sanshenggong, desert camps and festivals operate under separate rules. Use a government, venue, scenic-area or clearly authorised source. Decline any product promising birdwatching inside a protected core, access to unopened rock art or a crossing through an unregulated border wilderness.
A bird guide, hired driver, off-road operator or riding provider should explain credentials, the actual programme, insurance, child restrictions, helmets or other protection, weather cancellation and refunds. Retain the order, contract, payment and conversation. A vehicle swap, route change or new surcharge is a valid reason to stop before departure.
Wetland, Heritage and Road Safety
- At Wuliangsuhai and other wetlands, stay in open areas. Do not enter water, step onto ice, cross into reeds, approach irrigation channels or wander along an unmanaged shore.
- At Yinshan rock-art sites, never touch, rub, trace or mark the surface. Report damage to site staff or the relevant heritage authority.
- Windblown dust, thunderstorms, poor visibility and road controls end a long drive or desert activity.
- During grassland fire-control periods, keep ignition sources out of restricted areas. Do not drive over pasture or chase livestock, and close any gate that visitors are expressly permitted to use.
- For a remote route, give a trusted contact the number plate, driver, accommodation and expected arrival. Carry water, a warm layer and offline maps.
Final Checks
- Establish that Wuliangsuhai or the selected Yinshan site is receiving visitors that day.
- Compare the wind, storm and road outlook with the actual county route.
- Verify the driver, return, fuel or charging plan and the last dependable supply point.
- Ensure the accommodation can handle a late arrival and the expected temperature range.
If the answer to any point is “ask after arrival,” remain in Linhe or remove the farthest leg.
