Alxa is a vast league, not a single desert city. Alxa Left Banner, Alxa Right Banner and Ejina Banner have different bases and are separated by long road journeys. Bayanhot, Badain Jaran Town and Dalaihubu Town serve those three areas respectively; the Tengger Desert, Badain Jaran Desert and Ejina poplar landscape are not short stops on one easy road.
Choose the Travel Region First
Alxa Left Banner is a manageable introduction. Use Bayanhot for supplies and local history, then add a compliant activity at the edge of the Tengger Desert. Three or four days in Alxa Left Banner suit travelers who do not want consecutive long transfers.
Alxa Right Banner is chosen for the great dunes, lakes and geology of the Badain Jaran Desert. Travel beyond the Badain Jaran reception area depends on approved routes, suitable vehicles and experienced drivers; a normal rental car does not make an independent crossing legitimate or safe. Ejina Banner combines the Ejina Populus Euphratica Forest, Juyan Lake and the Heicheng ruins in the same broad northern region, but remains far from both other banners and major gateways.
Ceke Port and Dongfeng Space City are not ordinary walk-in attractions. Current government or authorized-operator notices determine opening, identity requirements, photography and drone rules at these border and aerospace locations.
Seasons and the Choice to Drop a Leg
Spring wind and blowing sand can cancel an Alxa desert day, so book it on terms that allow a weather change. An Alxa summer brings fierce sun and hot ground: move outdoor activity away from midday, carry ample drinking water and have the vehicle's cooling system checked. Autumn concentrates demand in Ejina, but poplar color, road controls and open zones vary with that year's weather rather than last year's photographs.
An Alxa winter is quieter but adds low temperatures, possible ice, short daylight and reduced services. With only three days, choose Alxa Left Banner or Ejina Banner, not both. A combined Badain Jaran–Ejina journey needs at least a week and a buffer; strong wind, a cold front or a road closure is a reason to remove the cross-banner leg.
Select Sights by Purpose, Not by Count
Bayanhot is the practical place to buy supplies and learn about the league before a desert excursion. A town day may include a museum, the Dingyuanying area and cultural landscapes along the western foot of the Helan Mountains. Around Bayanhot, religious sites, rock-art areas and protected land can have their own opening and photography boundaries.
The Tengger Desert direction suits a half-day or full-day entry experience from Alxa Left Banner. Ask the Tengger operator for the camp's actual location, access road, vehicle, age or health restrictions, insurance and wind-cancellation process. The Badain Jaran Desert is a managed remote journey among large dunes and lakes, so confirm its entry point, reception center, driver, communications, lodging and rescue arrangement before paying.
Ejina Populus Euphratica Forest deserves a slow day. Follow the posted shuttle routes and enter only sectors that are open. Never break a branch, step over ecological barriers or walk on young growth. At Juyan Lake, wind, temperature, water conditions and bird protection determine the experience; stay on designated paths and keep a suitable distance from wildlife. Around the Heicheng ruins, allow extra time for sand walking and never climb the fragile walls.
Itineraries With Honest Distances
For three days in Alxa Left Banner, arrive in Bayanhot, complete supplies and reconfirm the next day's operator. Use day two for one approved Tengger-edge activity and return to fixed lodging before dark. On day three, choose a museum, historic district or open religious-cultural site, then protect the airport or coach connection.
For four or five days in Alxa Right Banner, reach Badain Jaran Town and check the forecast, reception point and vehicle on day one. Spend two or three middle days only on the route approved by the operator and site management, matching each stage to reachable lakes, lodging and supply points. Sleep in town after leaving the desert before attempting a flight or long road transfer.
For four days in Ejina Banner, settle in Dalaihubu Town and confirm the return ticket on day one. Give the Ejina Populus Euphratica Forest all of day two. On day three, choose Juyan Lake or the Heicheng direction, combining them only if wind, access and transport clearly allow it; use day four for departure and add more buffer in peak foliage season.
A seven- to ten-day cross-league route is reasonable only after the driver, vehicle, lodging and fuel plan are settled. Set one long transfer target per day and ensure every cancelled section can retreat to the nearest banner administrative center.
Arrival and Transport
Airports serve the three Alxa banners, but routes, operating days and baggage terms can change. Ejina may also have regular or seasonal rail service. Verify the exact date with the airline, airport and China Railway 12306 rather than turning a historical timetable into an itinerary.
Self-driving is common on paved roads, not an authorization to roam the desert. Inspect tires and the spare, engine oil, coolant and practical fuel or battery range; confirm roadside-assistance coverage, download offline maps and note the next dependable fuel or charging point. Read the rental contract for restrictions on Alxa, provincial borders, unsealed roads and additional drivers.
Inside the Badain Jaran Desert or another managed desert route, use only the approved vehicle and track. Each morning, agree on the day's destination, return trigger and safe overnight point. Do not continue after dark to protect a booking in an unfamiliar town.
Where to Stay
Bayanhot is the dependable base for Alxa Left Banner, Badain Jaran Town supports the right-banner approach, and Dalaihubu Town is the main base for Ejina Banner. During the poplar season, verify the full address, private bathroom, hot water, heating, parking, breakfast, cancellation terms and late-arrival procedure. “Near the scenic area” is too vague for a region of this scale.
A desert camp needs more scrutiny than a town hotel. Ask for the registered operator, fire precautions, night staff, communications, drinking water, toilets, charging and an evacuation vehicle. A photogenic tent or glass cabin does not demonstrate rescue capacity; older adults, infants, light sleepers and travelers with relevant health conditions are usually better in a fixed building.
Food, Supplies and Payments
Complete full meals and shopping in Bayanhot, Badain Jaran Town or Dalaihubu Town. Beef and lamb, noodles, dairy foods and local snacks are common, but travelers should choose for their own diet and respect halal restaurant rules. Carry sealed water, shelf-stable food and rubbish bags on long transfers, and do not forage for desert plants or use alcohol as protection from cold.
Before booking an off-road trip, camp, ride, photo session or low-altitude flight, identify the registered business and exact activity location. The booking agreement should state included services, insurance, cancellation and refund terms. Avoid a large transfer to a personal payment code whose connection to the operator cannot be verified, and retain contracts, messages and receipts through the journey.
Desert, Border and Ecological Boundaries
Never enter an Alxa desert alone. On foot or by vehicle, keep away from dry lakebeds, unsigned tracks, protected core zones and military facilities. During blowing sand, reduce speed, use appropriate lights and wait at a safe place rather than following an unknown convoy into poor visibility.
If a vehicle becomes stuck or a person is missing or ill, contact emergency services and the operator instead of driving deeper in search of a signal. Ground drones in high wind and obey every posted restriction around Ceke Port, Dongfeng Space City, border areas and military-related sites. Protect poplars, saxaul and biological soil crust by keeping wheels off vegetation and removing all camp waste.
Health and an Exit Plan
Alxa's main health risks are dehydration, sun exposure, cold, blowing sand, driver fatigue and distance from help—not altitude. Watch for reduced fluid intake or urination, unusual drowsiness and serious sunburn, and shorten outdoor periods for children and older adults. Persistent chest pain, breathing difficulty, confusion, severe dehydration or major injury requires urgent medical help.
Agree on simple exit decisions before departure. Mild illness means returning to Bayanhot, Badain Jaran Town, Dalaihubu Town or the nearest settled base; unsafe wind or a vehicle fault cancels the desert segment. A closure or regional dust storm means leaving from the current banner rather than chasing the original route. Refundable transport, a backup room and a weather day are part of the Alxa budget.
