Access rules for the Erhai Ecological Corridor, road works, sightseeing vehicles, boat services, attraction reservation requirements, weather warnings, hotel cancellations and photography packages can change. Check current notices from Dali authorities, transport operators, attractions and the weather service before setting out.
A trip around Erhai is not a continuous drive beside the water. Dali Old Town, Caicun and Longkan are on the southern part of the west shore; Xizhou lies farther north; Shuanglang, Wase and Haidong are on the east. The west-shore ecological corridor and the east-shore road follow different access rules. For an Erhai Lake trip, choose a west-shore slow-travel day, a drive on Huanhai East Road or an old-town stay first; only then decide whether changing shores is worthwhile.
When to go and how many days to allow
Spring and autumn suit walks and short rides between Longkan and Caicun, though strong sun, cool evenings and sudden wind still need preparation. Summer makes the fields around Xizhou greener, but short heavy downpours can also bring slippery roads and flood or geological-hazard warnings. Clear winter days can bring excellent visibility from Haidong, while mornings, evenings and exposed stops along Huanhai East Road feel much colder. No season at Erhai Lake guarantees a particular sunset, flowering window or calm water.
With one day at Erhai Lake, choose either the west shore or Huanhai East Road. Two days allow Dali Old Town, Longkan and Xizhou on the first day, followed by Shuanglang, Wase and selected Haidong stops on the second. Use three days or more if Cangshan, central Dali or a genuine rest day matters. A complete loop is not automatically a better Erhai trip.
Understand the two shores
- Dali Old Town, Caicun and Longkan: These are useful west-shore bases. Dali Old Town is not directly on Erhai Lake, so check the transfer to Longkan or Caicun before setting out.
- Erhai Ecological Corridor: Walk, use authorised services or cycle only where current signs allow. Inside the Erhai Ecological Corridor, motor vehicles and electric scooters or e-bikes may not enter unless current rules allow; camping, cooking fires, fishing, roadside trading and unlicensed rental activity are also restricted.
- Xizhou: Come for Bai architecture, lanes, fields and food. Around Xizhou, residential courtyards, farm tracks and working fields are not public photography sets.
- Shuanglang: An overnight stay in Shuanglang makes room for the lake and lanes at a slower pace. Before booking in Shuanglang, confirm narrow-road access, the vehicle drop-off point, parking, luggage transfer and street noise.
- Wase, Xiaoputuo and Haidong: These work as selected east-shore stops. Along Huanhai East Road, exposed bends, roadside viewpoints and strong wind make casual stopping unsafe.
What to keep and what to drop
For a first trip, use Dali Old Town or Xiaguan as the transport base, choose one section around Longkan or Caicun, and give Xizhou half a day. Shuanglang deserves an evening and morning only when the room location, vehicle access and cancellation terms are clear. Wase, Xiaoputuo and Haidong follow the same general direction as Shuanglang; there is no need to stop repeatedly for nearly identical views.
Cangshan is not a quick extra on an Erhai circuit. For Cangshan Mountain, check cable cars, trails, weather, elevation change and the final transfer separately, and remove at least half a day from the Erhai Lake route. For an Erhai Lake boat trip, use that day's official route, pier and weather notice; do not assume a fixed timetable or stop pattern.
Three itineraries that work
One-day west-shore route
Start from Dali Old Town or Xiaguan. Spend the morning on one corridor section around Longkan or Caicun, then use the afternoon for Xizhou's lanes, architecture and fields. Return to Dali Old Town or Xiaguan in the evening instead of adding an east-shore transfer. In rain or strong wind, shorten the Erhai Ecological Corridor ride and return to Dali Old Town for an indoor stop.
Two days across both shores
Use day one for the old town, Longkan and Xizhou, staying in the old town, Xizhou or another convenient base. On day two, travel to Shuanglang and add only one or two of Wase, Xiaoputuo and Haidong according to road conditions and energy. Do not put a non-changeable long-distance departure immediately after a drive from Haidong or Wase.
Three days without chasing a full loop
Use the first day for Dali Old Town and Xiaguan, the second for a west-shore walk and Xizhou, and the third for Shuanglang and Haidong. If Haidong has poor lakeside weather on day three, rest in Dali Old Town or leave early instead of cycling through wind and rain or driving late merely to close the circle.
Arrival points, shore changes and the trip back
Dali Railway Station is in the Xiaguan urban area, while the airport lies southeast of the lake. Dali Old Town, Xizhou and Shuanglang are separate transfer points. For a pickup at Dali Railway Station or Dali Airport, give the driver the full terminal name, accommodation pin and final access instructions. Public transport can connect Dali Old Town, Xizhou and Shuanglang in stages, but stops, frequencies and final services change and should be checked on the day.
For a hired car on Huanhai East Road, record the vehicle, registration, driver, hours, distance or overtime basis, parking charges, stop duration, cancellation terms and insurance. Before renting an e-bike near Dali Old Town or Longkan, verify registration, permitted roads, helmet, range, charging and accident procedure. Do not take a road vehicle into a restricted section of the Erhai Ecological Corridor. Drivers on Huanhai East Road should use legal parking places and never stop on a bend, junction or exposed waterside edge for a photograph.
Cycling and walking safely
A short ride from Longkan or Caicun suits most visitors better than a full Erhai Lake circuit. At a Longkan or Caicun rental point, check brakes, tyres, lights, saddle and helmet, and confirm the return point and overtime charge. Headwinds, sun and gradual slopes make map distance deceptive. Children, older travellers and occasional cyclists on the Erhai Ecological Corridor need a fixed turn-around point rather than an improvised all-day ride.
Follow pedestrian and vehicle separation and all signs inside the Erhai Ecological Corridor. Inside the Erhai Ecological Corridor, keep fire routes clear, do not trail sightseeing vehicles, and stay out of wetlands, beaches under restoration and closed habitat. Stop unfamiliar riding between Xizhou and Longkan after dark. During thunder, high wind, heavy rain or widespread standing water, use legitimate transport back to Dali Old Town or Xiaguan rather than sheltering beside Erhai Lake, under an isolated structure or beneath a tree.
Where to stay
Dali Old Town offers food, evening walks and transfers in several directions, but vehicle access, parking distance and night noise vary by lane. Xiaguan is convenient for Dali Station and city services. Xizhou suits a quieter west-shore stay. Shuanglang and Haidong concentrate lake-view rooms but require closer attention to luggage access, stairs, parking and nearby meals.
For a “lake-view room” in Shuanglang or Haidong, check the true window direction, obstruction, floor, noise, heating or air conditioning, hot water and nearby construction. Wide-angle photographs do not prove a usable view. If a Shuanglang guesthouse pickup starts at a public car park, put that arrangement in the booking. In busy or unsettled weather periods around Erhai Lake, favour clear cancellation terms over locking every night into Shuanglang or Haidong.
Food and shopping boundaries
Bai home cooking, rushan cheese, rice noodles, Xizhou baba and mushrooms are easier to enjoy across several meals than in one large order. In Dali Old Town or Xizhou, have mushrooms, meat and aquatic food thoroughly cooked. At restaurants in Xizhou or Dali Old Town, travellers with allergies should ask about dairy, nuts, broth and shared utensils. Before dining in Dali Old Town or Xizhou, confirm menu prices, charging units, set-menu size and any room or service fee, then retain the payment record.
When buying tie-dye textiles, silver jewellery, tea or flower cakes, use product-specific checks: verify material and origin for textiles; material, origin and stated weight for jewellery; producer, origin, net weight, shelf life and storage for tea; and ingredients, net weight, shelf life and storage for packaged foods. Confirm shipping, receipts and return terms before paying. Ordinary silver, tea or herbal merchandise should not be sold as medical treatment. Leave a “free transfer,” cheap photography package or craft lesson if the real condition is high-pressure shopping.
Photography, booking and local privacy
A Dali photography contract should list shooting time, clothing, makeup, original files, edited images, delivery date, selection surcharges, weather changes and cancellation. On Huanhai East Road, never stand in a traffic lane, cross a barrier or ask a vehicle to block the road for a picture. Drone use around Erhai Lake is subject to aviation, attraction, village and on-site controls; do not launch near Dali Airport, crowds or a signed restricted area.
In Xizhou, ask before entering a courtyard, field path or business space. Obtain clear consent before photographing residents, children, religious activity or work. Commercial crews must not occupy the Erhai Ecological Corridor for long periods. Book the transport and lodging that determine the route first; keep sunset viewpoints and online-photo props removable.
Ecology, safety and a route out
Around Erhai Lake, wetlands, the lakeside buffer and restoration areas are managed through ecological boundaries and on-site signs. Do not cross barriers, trample fields, handle or feed wildlife, or leave rubbish behind. Water level, waves and slippery surfaces change. Do not swim along an unmanaged Erhai Lake shore or climb rocks, breakwaters or lakeside structures.
Keep one practical exit point each day: Dali Old Town or Xiaguan on the west, and a confirmed transport point in Shuanglang, Wase or Haidong on the east. If a vehicle fails, a rider is injured or a warning is issued, finish in Dali Old Town, Xiaguan, Shuanglang, Wase or Haidong. The useful measure of an Erhai trip is not total distance, but knowing which section deserves time and which one should be dropped.
