Fuxian Lake has strict ecological controls around shoreline red lines, wetlands, inflowing rivers and water activities. Chengjiang Fossil Site Museum, Tonghai and the open Ailao Mountain attractions can also change access because of closure days, maintenance, forest-fire rules, heavy rain and roads. Destination Fit
Yuxi needs three to five days for Fuxian Lake, Chengjiang Fossil Site, historic Tonghai and the Ailao Mountains of Xinping. Fuxian Lake spans Chengjiang City, Jiangchuan District and Huaning County rather than forming one walkable attraction. Chengjiang Fossil Site World Natural Heritage Museum lies toward Chengjiang, Xiushan and Tonghai Old Town are in another direction, and open Ailao Mountain attractions require a longer road through Xinping and Gasa. A first trip can use two days for one side of Fuxian Lake and the fossil museum, then choose Tonghai or Xinping. Do not circle the lake and drive to Ailao Mountain in one day.
When to Go
Late autumn through spring often suits lakeside walks and cultural routes, although ultraviolet exposure, wind and temperature changes remain strong beside Fuxian Lake. Summer vegetation is lush and thunderstorms, intense rain, flash floods, rockfall and mountain-road disruption are more likely. A calm-looking lake is not permission to swim from an unmanaged shore. Ailao Mountain is frequently misty and needs its own Xinping forecast. Winter is relatively stable for the museum and public lakeside areas, while cold, ice and forest-fire controls can still limit mountain plans.
Choosing the Right Stops
- Chengjiang side of Fuxian Lake: this is the simplest first-visit base for public lakeside spaces, wetland edges and Chengjiang accommodation. Choose one legally open shore section instead of treating a complete driving loop as the objective.
- Chengjiang Fossil Site World Natural Heritage Museum: this is the proper introduction for families and natural-history travelers. Fossils may not be collected, excavated or removed from the protected fossil-site area.

A two-day trip can combine the fossil museum and Chengjiang shore on day one with a slow second day at the same lake sector or Xiushan and Tonghai Old Town. Ailao Mountain requires two more days. Move first to Xinping or Gasa for the night, then use only roads and developed scenic areas confirmed open, returning before dark. Shimen Gorge, Tea-Horse Road, Jinshan Forest and Nan'en Waterfall should not automatically be combined. A Jiangchuan base works when the southwest side of the lake is the main plan, but verify the exact village and public transport. For a lake-view room, establish the real view, distance to a legal walkway, damp, insects, cooling, parking and severe-weather cancellation. Xinping county town or Gasa is the sensible base before Ailao Mountain; a rural mountain property needs clear road, power, hot-water, communication and fire-safety conditions.
