Rongchang sits in western Chongqing, and its strongest reason to visit is unusually clear: three living craft traditions, Rongchang pottery, xiabu ramie cloth, and Rongchang folding fans, can still be understood through exhibitions, workshops, and objects made for daily use. Xiabu Town is the easiest introduction in central Rongchang; Antao Town in Anfu is the place to focus on pottery; Wanling Ancient Town adds riverside streets, bridges, and migration history along the Laixi River. A focused day covers two of those areas. Stay overnight if you want to make something, talk with a craft practitioner, or explore Wanling without watching the return clock.
Xiabu Town: Opening Information and Museum Visits
Xiabu Town (夏布小镇) is an open cultural-tourism street area with separate venues, not one exhibition with a single timetable. The Rongchang government introduction dated June 8, 2026 identifies the China Xiabu Museum (中国夏布博物馆), local history exhibition hall (荣昌历史文化展览馆), Deng Zaijun television art museum (邓在军电视艺术馆) and folding-fan experience venue (荣昌折扇传承体验馆). Confirm the particular venue you want to enter, including its closing day, last admission and guided-visit arrangements.
The district tourism directory, marked published September 8, 2025, lists the following. We reviewed the directory on September 8, 2026; this is not a same-day opening confirmation. Some classification details differ from later announcements, so confirm hours before travelling.

Distances from Xiabu to Wanling and Antao
A Rongchang transport notice dated June 9, 2025 listed two trial-shuttle routes: 10 km from Xiabu Town (残联门口) to Wanling Ancient Town (场镇转盘), and 15 km from the same Xiabu stop to Antao Town (景区大门口). These are historical distances between specified stops, not 2026 driving measurements or distances to individual hotels and workshops. Reviewed September 9, 2026; continued operation has not been confirmed. Check current navigation and the operator for your trip; do not treat the notice's old fares or timetable as current.
Xiabu to Antao: Transfers and Pottery Workshops
Xiabu is in central Rongchang; Antao is in Anfu (安富), so arrange transport between the two areas. A district tourism reply dated June 25, 2025 mentions rural bus services from Fuji Coach Station (富吉汽车站) to Antao. It is not a current timetable for a direct Xiabu–Antao service.
- Bus: confirm how to reach Fuji, the Antao stop, departure times and the last return with the local operator. Trial routes and holiday-only free shuttles are not evidence of a regular service.
- Car or taxi: use the booked workshop's Chinese address, which may differ from the town entrance. Arrange the return as well as the outward ride. Check the current route and journey time; the historical shuttle distances above do not replace navigation for your actual addresses.
- Workshop: ask for the duration, age requirements, available places, materials, firing, collection date, postage and cancellation terms. No single verified price covers all pottery workshops.

Decide what the trip is actually about
For a one-day Rongchang trip, choose either a craft route or a craft-and-riverside route. The most coherent craft day links Xiabu Town with Antao Town: learn how ramie cloth and folding fans are made in the morning, then give Rongchang pottery a proper half-day in Anfu. A more relaxed first visit links Xiabu Town with Wanling Ancient Town, leaving Antao for another trip. Two days allow Xiabu Town on the first afternoon, followed by a full day at Antao or Wanling. Do not add Gufoshan or another rural attraction simply because it appears nearby on a map; the road time and outdoor pace change the trip. Rongchang works especially well as a cultural stop between central Chongqing and destinations farther west, but only if transfers do not consume the hours meant for workshops and old-town walking.
Choose the season and build a weather fallback
Spring and autumn are generally the easiest seasons for walking beside the Laixi River and between the lanes of Wanling Ancient Town. Holiday weekends can bring heavier traffic, limited workshop places, and longer restaurant waits. Summer is hot and stormy, so keep outdoor sections for early morning or late afternoon and use the China Xiabu Museum, the Rongchang history exhibition, folding-fan displays, or pottery galleries for the hottest hours. Stone paving and river steps around Wanling, as well as workshop yards at Antao, can be slick after rain. Winter suits the Rongchang History and Culture Exhibition Hall and Rongchang Folding Fan Heritage Centre, but individual studios and rural buses may run shorter or less frequent schedules. Check the Rongchang cultural-tourism and attraction notices on the day. In heavy rain, dense fog, or an extreme-heat warning, drop mountain and riverside sections instead of trying to preserve an outdoor itinerary.
Pick among Xiabu Town, Antao Town, and Wanling
Xiabu Town is the most convenient starting point. Its museum and exhibition spaces introduce xiabu weaving, Rongchang history, and folding-fan craftsmanship in a compact urban setting. It is an activated cultural district with reconstructed or adapted buildings, so do not assume every traditional-looking facade is an old monument. Antao Town, in Anfu Subdistrict, is the best choice for understanding Rongchang pottery through clay preparation, forming, carving, firing, and contemporary use. A sales hall alone is not enough; use the Antao Museum displays, a documented production demonstration, or a structured workshop to understand the process. Wanling Ancient Town offers the strongest relationship between historic lanes, old bridges, former river transport, and the Laixi River. The Huguang Guild Hall and Zhao Family Ancestral Hall may have separate access or changing hours. If you can visit only one, choose Antao for making, Xiabu for convenience, and Wanling for streets and waterside atmosphere.
Use a route that can be completed
On a one-day craft route, reach Xiabu Town in the morning. At the China Xiabu Museum, start with ramie fibre and weaving, then move to the folding-fan displays so fan ribs, leaves, and assembly remain clear. Have lunch in central Rongchang, where braised goose, pugaimian noodles, or huangliangfen can fit without a long detour. Continue to Antao Town for a booked pottery session and a gallery or museum visit. On the alternative route, spend the morning at Xiabu Town and the afternoon in Wanling Ancient Town, walking from the bridge and old streets toward the Laixi River before returning to Rongchang after daylight. With two days, keep Antao and Wanling on separate days. If a pottery piece must be fired, confirm dispatch on the first visit and photograph the order details before leaving.
Arrive at the right station and plan the return
Read the full railway-station name before buying a ticket. Rongchang North Railway Station, other rail facilities, and coach terminals are not interchangeable simply because each listing contains “Rongchang.” From central Chongqing or Chengdu, compare the arrival station with your hotel and the first attraction rather than choosing the shortest train time. Xiabu Town is the easiest urban stop after arrival. Antao Town and Wanling Ancient Town lie in different directions; local and rural buses may serve them, but routes, boarding points, and last departures can change. At Fuji Coach Station (富吉汽车站), verify the current service on the stop board or with the operator that morning. Before taking a ride-hailing car out of town, check whether a return car is likely. Drivers should navigate to the designated car park, not through Wanling's pedestrian lanes. Leave a real buffer for road congestion and station security.
Stay in central Rongchang unless the location serves a purpose
Central Rongchang is the practical base for most visitors. It offers the broadest choice of meals, easier access to Xiabu Town, and more options when rain or a workshop cancellation forces a change. Choose a hotel by its actual walking route to transport and food, not by a broad “downtown” label. A night in Wanling Ancient Town is worthwhile for quiet morning streets and an evening by the river, but ask whether a car reaches the property, how far luggage must be carried, whether the room faces a noisy lane, and how guests leave early the next day. Staying near Anfu can suit travellers taking a longer pottery course at Antao Town, though evening dining is less concentrated. Recent comments about cleanliness, noise, hot water, and the property's exact entrance are more useful than stylised room photographs.
Eat and shop with practical questions in mind
Rongchang braised goose is the signature meal to try. Order a small portion first to judge seasoning, and check the production label, storage temperature, and use-by information before carrying a packaged portion home. Do not leave cooked poultry in a hot car. Pugaimian, huangliangfen, and other local dishes make efficient meals between craft visits; ask for less chilli or Sichuan pepper if needed. When buying pottery, ask whether a vessel is certified or intended for food contact, and whether it can tolerate a microwave, dishwasher, direct heat, or sudden temperature changes. For xiabu textiles, confirm the fibre composition and washing instructions. For a folding fan, inspect the ribs, leaf, alignment, and opening action. Request a receipt for expensive work and record the maker, materials, returns, packing, and shipping liability.
Book workshops and ticketed interiors carefully
An open cultural district does not mean that every museum, heritage room, or studio is open without notice. Check the operating day and admission method for the China Xiabu Museum, folding-fan experience spaces, Antao Town exhibitions, and any ticketed heritage interiors in Wanling. Before booking pottery, ask about class length, minimum age, clay and glaze included, firing, expected completion date, shipping fee, and what happens if the piece cracks in firing or transit. A pot shaped during class is rarely ready to carry away safely that afternoon. Apply the same discipline to xiabu or fan workshops: confirm the instructor, materials, finished object, address, and cancellation policy. During holidays, use an identifiable operator and a traceable payment channel. Avoid sending a large deposit to a personal account that cannot provide a booking record or clear terms.
Protect the craft, the old town, and yourself
Wanling's stone steps and waterside edges require attention, especially after rain. Do not step backward toward the Laixi River for a photograph, and keep children within an adult's reach near water. In Antao workshops, ask before photographing. Kilns, cutting tools, glazes, drying shelves, and unfinished commissions are working materials, not props. Do not touch or enter a production zone without permission. Respect a maker who does not want an order, client details, or an unreleased design filmed. Never remove old fittings, river stones, clay, or workshop material. Be sceptical of objects presented as excavated antiques or protected relics without provenance. Do not cross barriers for a “hidden” viewpoint, and do not drive after drinking. If a riverside path, hill road, or old building is closed, treat the closure as the route boundary.
Run a final Rongchang checklist
Choose “Xiabu plus Antao” or “Xiabu plus Wanling” before booking the train and central hotel. Save the full station name, official map pins, current opening notices, the last bus or a credible ride-hailing alternative, and enough time for the return journey. Put the workshop head count, ages, materials, firing, delivery, and refund terms in writing. Pack shoes with grip, water, sun and rain protection, a light layer for air-conditioned galleries, and a power bank. For braised goose, verify cold storage; for pottery, verify food use and protective packing; for xiabu, verify fibre and care. Most importantly, leave an optional riverside walk or another secondary stop removable. Rongchang is rewarding when the visitor understands what clay, ramie, and bamboo become in skilled hands, not when the day records the greatest number of place names.
