Combining Nanjing's tulou villages, Quanzhou's old city and the mountain scenery of Wuyishan works best when the journeys between them are treated as part of the holiday. This guide uses a nine-day, eight-night example: two nights near your chosen tulou area, three in Quanzhou and three near Wuyishan's main scenic area. It is an editorial planning suggestion, not an official tour or a promise about transport availability.
The example starts with arrival at your Nanjing accommodation and ends with departure from the Wuyishan area. Travel from home may require extra days. Choose Your Entry and Exit Points First
A south-to-north example is Nanjing tulou → Quanzhou → Wuyishan. This suits a trip entering through southern Fujian and leaving from the north. Xiamen or Zhangzhou can be a transport gateway without becoming an additional full sightseeing stop. If you arrive late, sleep in your arrival city and shift the tulou stay back a day; do not turn the first evening into a rushed drive into the hills.
Reverse the order when your bookings favour a northern arrival and southern departure. Keep the mountain days flexible around actual reservations and weather rather than simply reversing every activity on a timetable.
A return to the same airport or car-rental office changes the calculation. Price the final journey, any one-way rental charge and the alternative of travelling by rail. Do not assume a rental can be returned elsewhere until the provider has confirmed the arrangement.
A Nine-Day, Eight-Night Example
This schedule assumes you can safely reach your tulou accommodation on Day 1 and leave from the Wuyishan area on Day 9. Keep both inter-regional transfer days free of fixed-time sightseeing or evening shows. Add a night or remove a stop if the transport you can actually book does not fit.
Days 1–2: Stay Near One Tulou Area
Use the first day for arrival, check-in and a short walk nearby. Give the second day to one main route, choosing between Tianluokeng and Yunshuiyao before trying to combine both.
The Tianluokeng route can focus on the cluster, Yuchanglou and Taxia village; the Yunshuiyao route centres on the old path, Heguilou and Huaiyuanlou. A 2020 Fujian provincial notice lists these areas and their transport separately. Use that distinction to check what your selected ticket covers, not as a source of today's prices or access conditions.
If both areas matter to you, allow another night unless your first day genuinely offers enough daylight and confirmed local transport. Do not borrow time from the following day's journey to Quanzhou. Remember that tulou are also homes: an admission ticket is not permission to enter private rooms or climb to any floor you choose.
Day 3: Travel to Quanzhou
Treat the whole day as a transfer allowance. Leaving the tulou villages is a separate road journey from any onward rail trip. Confirm the pickup location, departure time and exact station before buying a tightly timed onward ticket. Check the actual date's services and whether a connection involves changing stations.
After checking in at Quanzhou, eat and walk near your accommodation if you have energy. The old-city sights can wait until tomorrow.
Days 4–5: Old City, Then One Optional Branch
Spend Day 4 around Kaiyuan Temple, West Street and the old-city lanes. On Day 5 choose one direction according to your interests: Xunpu's cultural setting, museums, or an outlying route with confirmed transport. These are alternatives, not a checklist to finish in a single day.
Quanzhou's 2023 cultural itineraries distinguish an old-city route from a maritime-culture route that includes Xunpu. The useful lesson is to plan in separate areas; the old article is not a current opening-hours guide. If booking flower adornment, photography or a guide, agree on the service, waiting time and price first. None is essential to enjoying the city.
Day 6: Travel to Wuyishan
Allow for checkout, the intercity journey and the transfer to your new hotel. Write down the actual Quanzhou departure station and your chosen arrival station in full. Nanpingshi (南平市站) and Wuyishan North (武夷山北站) are different stations. A booking labelled only “Wuyishan” is not enough for arranging a pickup.
The railway operator's 2020 guide identifies these two high-speed-rail gateways. Its old bus fares and schedules should not be reused as current information. The provincial transport authority's 2022 tram-opening notice records a connection on the Nanpingshi side, but current operating stops and the final service still need checking—especially for a late arrival.
Days 7–8: Keep Mountain Plans Flexible
Use two days for the main scenic area, selecting walks according to access conditions and your ability. If you want a Nine-Bend Stream bamboo-raft trip, fit the days around an available official reservation rather than assuming a particular departure is guaranteed.
A cancelled raft trip is not an automatic reason to go hiking in heavy rain. Check whether other areas are safe and open before choosing a lighter activity or resting. Three nights at one base reduce luggage moves and allow some flexibility; they do not guarantee a break in bad weather.
Day 9: Leave Room to Depart
Allow for the journey from your hotel to the exact station, security and boarding. Do not make a distant mountain attraction compulsory just because your train leaves late. Returning a car to Xiamen or beginning a long drive out of Fujian may need a separate travel day.
Pick Three Accommodation Bases
- Tulou: two nights. Choose around your main sightseeing area. Ask where a vehicle can stop, how far luggage must be carried, whether there are steps, how late check-in works and whether reaching the accommodation requires a separate attraction ticket. “Near the tulou” is too vague; staying nearby does not mean sleeping inside a protected building.
- Quanzhou: three nights. For an old-city-focused visit, compare walking access, the actual luggage drop-off point and nighttime noise. Drivers should arrange legal overnight parking rather than assuming every lane is accessible by car.
- Wuyishan: three nights. Match the hotel to your main entrance and local transport. Request an exact address and pickup meeting point. “Near the scenic area” does not necessarily mean close to your entrance or raft check-in point.
These stays total eight nights. If you add a gateway-city night or a weather buffer, change the later bookings as well as the itinerary heading.
Driving or Public Transport?
For a road trip, budget for driving, breaks, parking and the journey home. A navigation estimate is not the full travel-day duration. Check a rental's permitted use, collection and return locations, opening hours and fees. When darkness or poor visibility makes a mountain drive unsuitable, change the overnight stop rather than chase the schedule.
For public transport, settle the road transfers into and out of tulou country before committing to intercity trains. Write out the complete chain: hotel → pickup point → departure station → arrival station → next hotel. Confirm each link independently. For a booked car or driver, use a lawful operator and agree on pickup, waiting, parking and change charges.
Scenic shuttles, city buses and intercity trains are separate services. One ticket, a through connection or matching final departures should never be assumed. Leave an allowance where arrangements are not yet confirmed instead of filling the gap with an invented precise journey time.
Shorten the Trip by Removing a Stop
With only five or six travel days in Fujian, choose two destinations. Nanjing plus Quanzhou prioritises architecture and local culture; Quanzhou plus Wuyishan mixes city exploration with scenery. Avoid squeezing out the transfer days to fit all three.
For a twelve-day holiday starting elsewhere in China, deduct the actual outbound and return journeys first. The nine-day example does not establish that twelve days are sufficient from every departure point.
With an extra day or two, consider a gentler arrival, a second tulou area or a rest day in Quanzhou before adding more cities. If weather disrupts a stop, check warnings and transport at any proposed alternative too; a change of destination is not automatically a safer option.
Before paying for inflexible bookings, confirm your entry and exit points, both transfer days, all eight overnight dates and the current access and cancellation terms. Older official articles help explain the places and transport system, but their discounts, fares and timetables are not today's booking conditions.
