Beihai is a coastal city in Guangxi, China, and more than a single beach. The city waterfront, Old Street, Silver Beach and Qiaogang can fill one or two relaxed days; Golden Bay Mangrove and Hepu add wetland ecology and Maritime Silk Road history. Weizhou Island is a separate trip built around ferries, island transfers and overnight stays. If this is a first visit with only two days, a Beihai mainland stay is usually the more workable choice. If Weizhou is the priority, allow two nights on the island and protect the return with a weather buffer.
Decide the trip’s geographic scope first
- Silver Beach and Qiaogang fit one day of sand, a shoreline walk and an evening meal. At Silver Beach, swimming is optional and depends on the staffed area and conditions on arrival.
- Old Street and Waisha make a compact half-day or late-afternoon city route through arcades, port-city lanes and the waterfront. Old Street and Waisha need not be paired with a cross-city beach transfer.
- Golden Bay Mangrove or Hepu is a deliberate branch: choose the wetland for coastal ecology, or Hepu for museums and historical context.
- Weizhou Island is not a quick add-on. For Weizhou Island, ferry tickets, identification, port procedures, lodging, island pickup and weather-related changes all need to be settled before departure.
This division prevents a common planning mistake: treating every place with “Beihai” in its address as part of one walkable seaside strip.
Seasons matter through operating conditions
City walks and coastal sightseeing are possible throughout the year, but the limits change by season. Warm periods bring stronger sun, humidity and thunderstorms; typhoons or high winds can alter beach access and Weizhou sailings. Beihai’s cooler periods are comfortable for walking, though persistent sea wind can make mornings and evenings feel chilly enough for a light layer.
For Beihai swimming, beachcombing or a Weizhou ferry crossing, check the current weather, marine warning, operator notice and on-site flags close to departure. An old Beihai tide calendar is neither a Weizhou sailing notice nor permission to enter a tidal area. Build the Beihai day so that a museum, city walk or unhurried meal can replace the coast without jeopardising the next transfer.
Silver Beach and Qiaogang belong on one day
At Silver Beach, make the open shoreline, sand and sunset the core plan. Before entering the water, identify the staffed swimming zone, warning flags and any barriers. Leave when staff instruct visitors to do so, or when thunder, stronger waves, a current or reduced visibility changes the conditions. An unmanaged stretch elsewhere, wet rocks and the outer side of a breakwater are not substitutes when the swimming area is closed.
After Silver Beach, Qiaogang works naturally as the evening stop. Its food streets offer seafood, fried prawn cakes, sweet soups, rice-noodle dishes and Vietnamese-influenced snacks. At Qiaogang Style Street, compare posted prices, preparation, queue length and dining conditions instead of organising the evening around one fashionable shop. Qiaogang Beach and Silver Beach are different destinations, so keep the Chinese place name on the phone and confirm it with the driver.
Old Street, Waisha and a rain-day city route
Beihai Old Street is a lived-in arcade district, not an outdoor film set. A late-afternoon visit allows time to notice its port-city streets without rushing. Ask before photographing residents, people at work, shop interiors or residential doorways. Afterwards, Waisha can form the waterfront part of the same outing, but poorly lit shore edges are a poor place to linger after dark.
When showers or rough water remove a beach session, use a cultural venue in the city or consider Hepu Han Dynasty Culture Museum if its opening and transport work that day. At Hepu Han Dynasty Culture Museum, closing days, reservation methods and temporary exhibitions can change, so verify current information rather than treating the indoor alternative as automatically available.
Choose between Golden Bay Mangrove and Hepu
Golden Bay Mangrove is for tidal ecology and interpretation, not unrestricted digging or beachcombing. The tide affects what can be seen there, but visitors should stay on authorised paths or boardwalks, avoid entering exposed mud, and leave shellfish and wildlife undisturbed. A commercial “tide experience” is usable only within the area and rules approved by the site on the day.
Hepu County lies outside the compact Beihai city circuit. It earns a half-day or full day for travellers interested in Han-period local history and the Maritime Silk Road, provided museum opening and the return journey have been checked. On a two-day beach break, omitting Hepu is more sensible than compressing both history and the coast. Public transport to Hepu County and venue access should be rechecked on the travel date.
Give Weizhou Island two nights and a return buffer
Ferries to Weizhou Island normally leave from Beihai International Passenger Port. Buy tickets through the operator or an authorised channel, and check the passenger identification required, exact departure port, boarding deadline, ticket conditions and refund or change terms before paying. Sailings can change because of sea conditions, typhoons, maintenance or passenger management. A third-party timetable does not override the operator’s notice at the International Passenger Port.
Travellers prone to seasickness should ask a pharmacist or doctor about an appropriate option and follow its directions. On the island, plan South Bay, the volcanic coast, villages and any church precinct that is open across separate periods; a forced one-day circuit leaves little room for access changes. Crocodile Mountain Scenic Area and other managed attractions may alter entry requirements or open areas according to operations and weather.
Coral, shells and volcanic rock are part of the environment, not souvenirs to collect. Do not step onto exposed reef flats, remove natural material or buy coral products of uncertain origin. If a flight or long-distance train follows the island stay, return to Beihai city the day before when marine conditions are unsettled instead of connecting the last possible ferry directly to the next ticket.
Two to four days without wasted transfers
Two mainland days
Spend the first day on Old Street and Waisha, then eat in Qiaogang. Keep the second day for Silver Beach and decide about swimming only after seeing the flags and staffed area. A family can exchange half of the beach day for Golden Bay Mangrove. Do not insert an improvised Weizhou crossing into this plan.
Three days for coast and history
Use day one for Old Street, Waisha and the city; day two for Silver Beach and Qiaogang; and day three for either Golden Bay Mangrove or Hepu. The final choice should follow the interests of the group, venue opening, weather and the confirmed return transfer. This structure also leaves a practical indoor or food-based fallback for rain.
Four days including Weizhou
Use the arrival day for Old Street or a short mainland beach visit, spend the next two nights on Weizhou, and return to Beihai on the final day. If wind or ferry uncertainty increases, drop the mainland extra before shortening the island’s departure margin. The aim is to protect the crossing and onward transport, not to preserve every sightseeing item.
Arrivals and longer local transfers
Beihai Railway Station, often shown simply as Beihai Station, is a useful arrival point for the city, Silver Beach and the passenger-port direction. Beihai Fucheng Airport still requires a road transfer. Choose a bus, taxi or ride-hailing car according to the actual destination, and do not confuse a generic “Beihai Port” map pin, Beihai International Passenger Port and an ordinary waterfront location.
Before going to Hepu, Golden Bay Mangrove or a more distant shore, establish the last workable public transport or the conditions for booking a return car. On Weizhou Island, roads, village lanes and slopes differ from the city. Ask the accommodation whether port pickup is included, and record the pickup period and baggage limits separately. If renting an electric scooter, verify the business, vehicle condition, helmet, battery range and accident procedure; avoid riding at night or on wet roads.
Match lodging to the part of the trip
- Silver Beach or Qiaogang: useful when beach time and evening food matter most. Check the real walking route, humidity and potential night noise.
- Old Street, Beibuwan Square or Beihai Railway Station: better for city walking, transfers and wet-weather alternatives; reaching Silver Beach requires an extra journey.
- Hepu: justified by a definite county museum or local-history plan, not by a mainland beach itinerary.
- Weizhou Island: choose by port pickup, access to meals, water and power information, and the policy for sailing disruption. A “sea-view” label does not answer those questions.
Read the room and cancellation terms for the exact date and product. An accommodation listing, port pickup and attraction admission are separate services unless the booking explicitly bundles them.
Eat seafood with the transaction settled first
Besides seafood, Beihai offers prawn cakes, sweet soups, noodles and Qiaogang’s Vietnamese-influenced flavours. When ordering live seafood or using a preparation service, agree on the species, unit price, weight, draining or cleaning rule, cooking method, preparation charge and any service fee before the food is handled. Review the itemised bill and keep the payment record.
People with sensitive stomachs should limit raw or chilled foods, and seafood should be thoroughly cooked. When buying pearls, dried seafood or shell crafts, check the stated material and grade, storage information where relevant, return conditions and receipt. Do not buy coral, giant-clam products or other material of uncertain origin that may be protected or restricted.
Tickets, reservations and cancellation boundaries
Use official or authorised channels for ferry tickets, island attraction tickets and transfers. Match every booking to the correct passenger, date, port, entry period and service provider; do not transfer money to a stranger for an alleged internal ticket. Before committing to a weather-sensitive service, save the operator’s change, cancellation and refund rules rather than assuming bad weather produces an automatic refund.
The same separation applies to lodging, scooter rental and paid beach activities. Record the business name, actual address, included service, deposit if any, equipment, weather cancellation rule and return method. Keep the order, messages, receipts and payment record. If a dispute occurs, start with the platform, operator and appropriate local channel instead of accepting an undocumented replacement service.
Coastal safety has no fixed shortcut
Use only open routes in mangroves, reef areas and the intertidal zone. Children need an adult within close reach at the water; an inflatable toy is not life-saving equipment. On-site staff, barriers and flags take precedence over a personal judgement that the sea “looks calm.” Stop swimming, beachcombing or boating when warnings change.
Apply the same caution to the Weizhou return journey. Leave enough space between an island ferry and a flight or train, and reduce the itinerary when the weather risk rises. A city venue, a meal or an early return is a successful adjustment when the alternative is an unmanaged shore or a fragile last connection.
Final checks before departure
One or two days before leaving, check Beihai weather and marine warnings, both Weizhou sailings, attraction and museum opening, accommodation cancellation terms, and the airport or station transfer. After arrival, check the swimming flags, tidal conditions and current notices again. Beihai works best when every coastal activity has a safe exit and every island crossing has enough time to change.
