Chengmai County borders Haikou on the west side of Hainan Island. Its strongest short trips combine coffee country, lived-in historic villages and an easy link to the coast. The main bases are Laocheng Town, Fushan Town, Dafeng Town and Jinjiang Town. Yingbin Peninsula belongs to the Haikou-facing side of the county. Roads connect Laocheng, Fushan, Dafeng and Jinjiang, but they do not form a compact walking or public-bus circuit.
First-time visitors should choose either a heritage line or a coffee-and-coast line. The heritage line joins Luoyi Village, the Meilang Twin Pagodas and Fufeng Youting Ancient Town. The leisure line centres on Fushan coffee, a rural meal and the open shore around Laocheng or Yingbin Peninsula. One day is enough for two or three stops in the same direction. Two days make the county much easier to understand and leave a safer margin before a Haikou connection.
What deserves your time
Luoyi Stone Lanes, Meilang Heritage and Fufeng Youting
Luoyi Village is a living settlement shaped by volcanic-stone houses, paved lanes and everyday village life. The attraction is the fabric of the place rather than a sequence of ticketed photo sets. At Luoyi, use the designated parking area outside the village and continue on foot. Do not drive into a narrow stone lane or leave a vehicle across a resident’s doorway.
The Luoyi stone lanes can be slick after rain, especially where moss has formed. Non-slip shoes are more useful than a complicated sightseeing schedule. Ask before photographing a courtyard, an older resident, a child or a ritual space. A closed door at Luoyi means private space, not an invitation to look for another entrance.
The Meilang Twin Pagodas are protected historic structures, so respect the site boundary, barriers and any restoration work in progress. At Meilang, access may be limited to an exterior view. Do not climb either pagoda, touch its components or accept an informal offer to cross a closure. A current opening check is essential before a special journey from another part of Chengmai.
Fufeng Youting Ancient Town adds an old trading-town theme to a heritage day. Dafeng Old Street is another useful stop in the area. Exhibitions, food stalls and organised activities may not operate every day at Fufeng Youting or Dafeng Old Street. Confirm what is actually available. A heritage day can pair Luoyi with either Meilang or Fufeng Youting. Trying to add the coast and a full coffee programme leaves too much of the visit on the road.
Coffee Country around Fushan
Fushan coffee can be one theme for understanding Chengmai, but that does not make Fushan a proxy for the county's entire coffee industry. Cafés and estates choose their own beans, roasts and brewing styles. Comparing two preparations can explain the specific operators better than searching for a supposedly definitive cup.
An estate walk, roasting demonstration, hand-brewing session or harvest activity requires an arrangement with a specific Fushan business. Flowering, fruiting and farm production change by season. A coffee pin on a map does not guarantee that visitors may enter a plantation. Before booking, ask what the activity includes and how long it is expected to take. Confirm whether a meal or take-home product is included.
A coffee visit works naturally with lunch in the same area. It can also pair with Dafeng Town or the Laocheng side if the second stop is modest. Avoid turning rural roads into a race between unrelated businesses. A café that is open during an afternoon storm is a safer alternative than waiting beside an exposed field or shoreline.
The Coast around Laocheng and Yingbin Peninsula
Laocheng Town is Chengmai’s most convenient link with metropolitan Haikou. Yingbin Peninsula lies on this side of the county and offers the clearest coastal option for a short Chengmai itinerary. Choose a shoreline or cultural place only after confirming its public entrance and current management boundary. Beaches, temples, wetlands and resort developments on Yingbin Peninsula can follow different rules even when they share the same stretch of coast.
The Yingbin Peninsula coast should be treated as a shore walk unless a clearly marked, supervised swimming area says otherwise. A place name on a map does not establish free entry or safe bathing. Access can also change because of weather, maintenance or private development. At managed sites, check photography, pets and drones separately.
Season and weather
Chengmai stays warm through the year. Heat, heavy rain, lightning and typhoons impose the real limits. A relatively dry spell is comfortable for Luoyi Village, Dafeng Old Street and Fushan’s country roads, though the midday sun still demands water and shade. During hotter periods, split village and coast walking between the earlier and later parts of the day.
Rain makes volcanic rock, stone paving and rural slopes slippery. Low-lying roads may hold water after a short intense downpour. The approach to Meilang or a coffee estate can therefore require more caution than the main highway. Do not assume that sunshine in Haikou guarantees dry lanes in central Chengmai.
Typhoon or severe-thunderstorm warnings are reasons to cancel the Yingbin Peninsula shore, wetlands, mangroves and long stays beneath trees. During lightning, move away from the Meilang Twin Pagodas, open fields and tall isolated trees. Check current restrictions and closures with Chengmai tourism authorities, the relevant township and the named operator.
Coffee gardens, orchards and field activities follow crop cycles and production needs. Treat farm activities as seasonal rather than permanently available. Historic places can also restrict entry for restoration, an event or residents’ needs. A confirmed Fushan café or a meal in Jinjiang Town is a more reliable wet-weather fallback than an unverified farm visit.
One or two days
One-day heritage route
Leave Haikou or your Chengmai accommodation early enough for an unhurried walk through Luoyi Village. Eat around Dafeng Town or Fushan Town. Spend the afternoon at either the Meilang Twin Pagodas or Fufeng Youting Ancient Town. Choose between those two according to access, road direction and the day’s weather. If the selected heritage stop is closed, use Dafeng Old Street or a confirmed Fushan café rather than enter through a resident’s lane.
One-day coffee and coast route
Begin with a booked coffee activity in Fushan Town and have lunch nearby. Continue to Laocheng Town or Yingbin Peninsula for a short coastal walk before the evening return. Keep the coffee booking as the main event; an orchard, old village and beach do not all belong in this day. If thunderstorms develop around Fushan Town, remain at an operating café or restaurant and move the Yingbin Peninsula walk to another morning.
Two-day route
Use the first day for Luoyi Village and one of the Meilang or Fufeng Youting heritage stops. Stay in Fushan, Jinjiang or Laocheng according to the next morning’s plan. On the second day, explore Fushan coffee and continue to the Laocheng–Yingbin Peninsula side. Keeping the heritage and coffee routes on separate days protects time for village history and a slower drink or meal. Dafeng Old Street can replace a closed heritage stop, while a confirmed Fushan café can replace a cancelled estate activity. If the trip ends with a Haikou connection, finish the coastal walk early enough to protect the transfer margin instead of crossing the county for another stop.
Arriving and moving around
Chengmai is reached from central Haikou, Haikou Meilan International Airport and the Hainan Island Ring Railway. Laocheng Town Station and Fushan Town Station serve different parts of the county. Not every train on the western section of Hainan’s ring railway calls at both stations. Check the actual service through China Railway’s 12306 platform before choosing a hotel or driver.
Neither station puts you at a village, coffee estate or beach. Luoyi Village, the Meilang Twin Pagodas, Fufeng Youting Ancient Town, coffee estates and the Yingbin Peninsula shore all require onward transport. Ask your hotel or driver to name the precise meeting point and final drop-off. A vague promise of “station pickup” is not enough if the booking uses the wrong Chengmai station.
Self-driving works best when the day’s stops stay in one part of the county. Village roads can be narrow and have frequent junctions, so slow down and avoid night driving on unfamiliar lanes. Navigation at Luoyi Village may lead toward the centre of the settlement rather than a suitable parking area. At old villages, use formal parking and walk the final section.
A pre-booked car is an alternative for travellers who do not drive. Agree the route, mileage, waiting time, parking, overtime, return point and cancellation terms before departure. Families should confirm a suitable child seat. Travellers with limited mobility should ask about walking distance, thresholds and toilet access at Luoyi, Meilang and rural businesses.
Lodging in Laocheng Town, Fushan Town and Jinjiang Town
Laocheng Town is the practical choice for Haikou, Meilan Airport and Yingbin Peninsula. It also offers access to a wider urban dining area. Confirm the actual road time to the terminal rather than treating the county boundary as a measure of distance. Do not drive after drinking at dinner.
Fushan Town suits travellers who want an early coffee activity or quiet rural meal. A Fushan stay makes less sense for an early Laocheng Town Station departure unless transport is arranged. Jinjiang Town is the county’s central service base and works well for middle-county villages, everyday shopping and stable supplies. Dafeng Town is useful for a heritage-led route, provided the chosen property meets the group’s comfort needs.
For a rural guesthouse, request the formal address and ask about parking, night lighting, insects, hot water, air-conditioning, breakfast and fire evacuation. Traditional buildings may have high thresholds, steep stairs and limited sound insulation. Guests who need step-free access should confirm the complete route from vehicle to room.
Accommodation near Yingbin Peninsula needs a separate access check. A “sea-view” label does not prove that a public path reaches the shore. Ask about the real walking route, construction, resort boundaries and evening transport. Keep the hotel address and transport contacts offline in case mobile service or a booking app fails.
Fushan Coffee, Qiaotou Sweet Potatoes and Ruixi Snacks
Fushan coffee is best approached through comparison. Ask the café or estate which beans it is serving, how they were roasted and which brewing method is used. For a class or tour, confirm whether the booking includes explanation, roasting, hand brewing, a simple meal or beans to take away. Read the duration and cancellation terms before paying.
Check the roast date, stated origin and storage advice before buying coffee beans. High temperatures shorten the safe life of milk drinks left standing. Carrying a freshly made drink is different from leaving it in a hot vehicle for hours. Drivers should skip alcohol on the travel day.
Chengmai food may include Qiaotou sweet potatoes, Ruixi-style snacks, poultry, vegetables, seasonal fruit and home-style seafood familiar on the west side of Haikou. Availability depends on the shop and season. Qiaotou and Ruixi are local food references, not promises that every restaurant serves the same menu.
For seafood or another dish sold by weight, confirm the unit, weighing method, preparation charge and total before cooking begins. Avoid milk coffee, cold dishes and cut fruit that have stood too long in the heat. Travellers with allergies should describe the ingredient clearly and keep necessary medication available.
Booking and heritage checks
Luoyi Village, the Meilang Twin Pagodas and Fufeng Youting Ancient Town may not share a ticketing platform. Confirm access boundaries, parking and interpretation through Chengmai tourism authorities, the township, a village committee or the formal operator. Restoration barriers at Meilang must be respected. No private guide should ask visitors to climb, touch masonry or bypass a fence.
Book a Fushan estate course, group interpretation or family activity with the business that will actually deliver it. A same-day arrival may provide only ordinary café or restaurant service. Read platform packages carefully to identify the operator, included items and weather cancellation terms. Treat any unofficial “Chengmai pass” with caution and verify each component separately.
The day before travel, reconfirm the driver, hotel, coffee host, village contact and return train. Check the forecast for Luoyi and Yingbin Peninsula as well as Haikou. If a heritage site closes, respect the closure and use Dafeng, Fushan, Laocheng or Jinjiang. Do not enter through a farm track or residential shortcut.
Safety and village etiquette
Wear non-slip shoes on Luoyi’s wet stone and volcanic surfaces. Children and older travellers should not hurry through mossy lanes. During intense heat, carry water and reduce exposed walking around midday. During lightning, leave pagodas, trees, open farmland and the shoreline.
Permission is required before entering a Fushan coffee garden, orchard or working field. Do not pick fruit, handle machinery or assume that a production area is a visitor attraction. In Luoyi Village, residents’ homes remain private. Ask before photographing people and do not fly a drone over roofs or courtyards.
On the Yingbin Peninsula shore, remain on land unless a designated swimming area is clearly open and supervised. Wetlands and mangroves should be viewed from the permitted path or boardwalk. Do not feed wildlife. Finish rural driving before dark whenever possible, especially after rain.
The final departure check should name the station, village parking point, coffee contact, heritage boundary, shore entrance and return route. Pack sun protection, insect repellent, rain gear, drinking water and shoes that grip wet stone. The best Chengmai itineraries cover one part of the county at a time. Keep enough daylight for the drive back to Laocheng or Haikou.
