Destination Fit
Nantong is a two- or three-day river-and-sea city break. In Chongchuan District, Hao River, Nantong Museum and the Temple Street–Southwest Camp historic area form a walkable museum route. Langshan, Junshan, Seyuan Garden and the Yangtze waterfront make a separate southern cluster. Tangzha is the place to understand Zhang Jian's industrial legacy and modern factory heritage. Yuantuojiao in Qidong, Lusi Fishing Port and Xiaoyangkou in Rudong are county-level coastal journeys, not quick evening add-ons. A first visit can use one day for Hao River and the museum, one for Langshan or Tangzha, and a third full day for either Qidong or Rudong.
When to Go
Spring and autumn suit Hao River walks, Langshan steps and industrial-heritage streets, although the Yangtze waterfront can still be windy. The plum-rain period and midsummer bring humidity, thunderstorms and intense rain that may interrupt cruises, hill access and coastal roads. Summer and autumn also require typhoon, storm-surge and marine-wind checks; cancel a Qidong or Rudong shore plan when warnings apply. Winter museums are a reliable city option, while the coast feels colder and needs an earlier return. Views at the river-sea junction depend on visibility, tide and the boundary open that day. Do not promise a particular sunrise or water color.
Choosing the Right Stops
- Hao River and Nantong Museum: Hao River surrounds the old city. Zhang Jian founded Nantong Museum in 1905, making this cluster useful for a half or full day of local history and public culture.
- Langshan and the Five Hills area: choose this direction for elevated Yangtze views, green space and religious heritage. Steps, access boundaries and temple etiquette matter.
- Tangzha industrial heritage: use Dasheng Cotton Mill and the surrounding historic buildings to understand Nantong's industrial development. Closed workshops and operating compounds are not visitor space.
- Yuantuojiao or Lusi Fishing Port in Qidong: these support a river-sea or working-port theme and need a separate day, tide information and a confirmed return.
- Xiaoyangkou in Rudong: Rudong is a different direction from Qidong. Stay nearby when it is the main purpose rather than combining both coasts.
Practical One-Day Itinerary
Start at Nantong Museum during its current opening period and focus on Zhang Jian, early public museum culture and local natural history. Continue along the public Hao River paths toward another open museum or the Temple Street–Southwest Camp area. After lunch, keep the route in the old city and finish with Hao River after dark if energy and return transport allow. If a reservation, renovation or rain closes the museum, use other open museums and streets around Hao River instead of entering a work compound. For a cruise, confirm the operator, active water section, pier and final departure in daylight, then leave a generous margin for the train or hotel.
Two Days or Longer
Use day one for Hao River and Nantong Museum. On day two, visit the Langshan Five Hills area, then choose only one of Seyuan Garden, a public Yangtze waterfront space or Tangzha. This avoids repeated transfers between the city's north and south. Add a coastal third day only when weather permits. In Qidong, build around Yuantuojiao and a formally open shoreline; in Rudong, use Xiaoyangkou or the current managed resort area. Choose one county. Under a typhoon, strong wind, fog or shore closure, replace the coast with Tangzha, blue printed fabric heritage or another city venue. Do not move to a breakwater, construction site or operating fishing pier to watch waves.
Getting There and Moving Around
Nantong Railway Station, Nantong West Railway Station and Nantong Xingdong International Airport lie in different directions. Verify the full name before arranging a pickup or hotel. Buses, ride-hailing and walking cover Hao River and some central museums, while Langshan, Tangzha and the coast need separate transfer planning. Qidong, Rudong and Lusi are not interchangeable beach labels. Recheck the final coach and ride-hailing availability close to travel. Drivers should allow for cross-river and coastal congestion, parking and charging. Never stop at bridge approaches, port lanes, narrow embankment roads or sections affected by tidewater.
Where to Stay
Hao River and central Chongchuan make the easiest first base for museums, food and evening walking. Check the actual entrance and walking route; a river-view label does not place a room beside the main heritage area. Hotels near Nantong Railway Station or Nantong West Railway Station suit early departures, but the stations cannot be substituted. Langshan lodging helps a southern route, although late food and bus options require checking. Stay in Qidong, Lusi or Rudong only when the coast is the priority. Verify true shoreline distance, damp control, parking, breakfast, night connections and typhoon cancellation.
Food Planning
Nantong menus often feature river and sea fish, clams, yellow croaker, swimming crab, noodles and local home-style dishes. Before ordering seafood, confirm the species, pricing unit, weight, preparation method, service charge and total. Keep the menu and receipt after weighing. Shellfish, fish, shrimp and crab should be thoroughly cooked. Unverifiable raw marinades and undercooked seafood are poor choices for children, pregnant travelers, older visitors and people with reduced immunity. High-risk foods such as pufferfish should come only from businesses legally qualified to serve them; never buy privately prepared products. Declare shellfish, peanut or fish-sauce allergies before cooking begins.

Nantong Museum and the museums around Hao River have separate reservation, security, closure and exhibition arrangements. Langshan admission, internal transport, temple access and parking are not necessarily one product. For a Hao River cruise, verify the licensed operator, pier, route, departure period and weather cancellation. Coastal boundaries in Qidong and Rudong may change because of wind, construction, ecological protection or events. Check in this order: weather and tide, venue access, return transport, then lodging cancellation. Do not pay for a temporary free event, an unmanaged mudflat entrance or an old cruise route seen in a short video.
Safety and Local Etiquette
Leave the river or coast under lightning, strong wind, dense fog, storm surge or flooding beyond the railings. Never cross a barrier to reach mudflats, breakwaters or a working port. At night around Hao River, watch lighting, railings and cyclists, and keep children within an adult's reach beside water. At Langshan and religious sites, lower voices, follow photo rules and do not touch offerings or heritage objects. Tangzha factories, residential courtyards and construction zones have clear boundaries. During coastal birdwatching, keep distance, do not chase wildlife and do not fly a drone where it could disturb habitat.
