Planning a 2026 visit
Choose North Slope or West Slope before booking. Check the chosen entrance's admission rules, park-shuttle and summit-vehicle tickets, entry window, identification requirements, last return service and weather-related operating notices; the two slopes use different gateways and ticket arrangements. Stay near the correct gateway, book flexible lodging, keep a backup and turnaround plan, and leave enough time for the return journey, especially in winter or with children.
For Chinese map and ticket searches, copy the characters in parentheses: North Slope (北坡景区), West Slope (西坡景区), Erdaobaihe Town (二道白河镇), Songjianghe Town (松江河镇), Changbaishan Railway Station (长白山站), Changbai Mountain Airport (长白山机场), Changbai Waterfall (长白瀑布), Julong Hot Springs (聚龙温泉群), and Jinjiang Grand Canyon (锦江大峡谷). Confirm the exact gate or collection point shown on the current ticket.
Mountain Overview
Changbai Mountain lies in southeast Jilin and straddles the border between China and the DPRK. The highest peak in the range is on the DPRK side; Baiyun Peak, at 2,691 metres, is the highest point on the Chinese side of the range. The mountain is closely associated with Manchu history and is treated as sacred in that tradition. Tianchi has a surface altitude of about 2,189.7 metres and a maximum depth of 373 metres. The Songhua, Tumen and Yalu river systems originate on the Tianchi volcanic cone; water leaving Tianchi on its north side runs through Chengcha River and Changbai Waterfall into Erdao Baihe, then joins the Second Songhua River.
Within China's Jilin Changbai Mountain National Nature Reserve, vertical vegetation changes from mixed broadleaf-conifer forest through dark conifer forest and birch forest to alpine tundra; remain on open routes for photographs and give all border, research and conservation notices priority.
Changbai Mountain has North Slope, West Slope and South Slope visitor areas. North and West are the regular choices. South Slope is more dependent on season and weather and may open only for a limited part of the year; do not build a fixed itinerary around it until official information confirms your dates. Each slope has separate gateways, transfers and weather conditions.
Changbai Mountain operations and scenery change by season: warmer periods suit forest and alpine landscapes, autumn may bring changing foliage, and winter supports only the ski and hot-spring services that are actually open. Because Tianchi ice breakup, flowering, foliage, snow cover and facility openings vary each year, use recent official imagery, weather warnings and the relevant operator instead of treating a calendar month as a scenery promise.
North and West Slope Comparison
North Slope
North Slope is the traditional first-visit route based on Erdaobaihe Town in Antu County, with more developed facilities, concentrated attractions and a multi-stage transfer chain. Enter through the point stated for the purchased product; when the summit is open, transfer to the shuttle serving the Tianchi summit viewpoint at the transfer centre, following the day's dispatch. This is not a direct ride from the mountain gate.
From North Slope, Tianchi is viewed at close range and from above, although the field of view can feel more limited than on West Slope; because North Slope opening does not guarantee operation of the summit vehicle or lake viewpoint, check the day’s wind, fog, precipitation and safety notice before entering.
Changbai Waterfall, where water leaves Tianchi through its northern outlet, is a signature North Slope stop when the current shuttle order, ground conditions and crowding permit. If the summit route closes, use Changbai Waterfall as an open alternative instead of trying to force access.
Julong Hot Springs lie about 900 metres below Changbai Waterfall and cover about 1,000 square metres. At Julong, water emerges from many outlets, and some outlets can reach 82°C. This is a sightseeing and hot-food stop rather than an in-park bathing facility: same-day scenic-area notices and on-site operation determine whether and where hot-spring eggs and corn are sold. Keep children closely supervised and away from high-temperature outlets and cooking areas, behind all barriers and warnings, to prevent burns.
Green Deep Pool offers a green water-and-forest stop, while Small Tianchi is a smaller companion lake with a circumference of about 260 metres. Both are lower-elevation alternatives when summit weather intervenes, subject to the day’s route and walking conditions.
Underground Forest occupies a crater-collapse valley with old trees and can be considered within the official North Slope transport day when its route is open. Pumice Forest is a separate visitor attraction, not a stop on the North Slope park-shuttle or summit-transfer system; add it only after confirming its current operator, access and return transport. Even when North Slope transport operates normally, a one-day route does not guarantee completion of every named stop.
Whether North Slope admission, the Chibei tourism bus, park shuttle buses and summit vehicle are sold separately—and the current identity, reservation, entry and time-slot rules—must be checked on the official booking page for the travel date. Reach that page through the current channels listed by the Changbai Mountain authority or scenic operator, then verify remaining capacity, accepted documents, concessions and temporary adjustments rather than reusing an old ticket bundle.
West Slope
West Slope is based on Songjianghe Town in Fusong County and is less developed and relatively more natural in feel; it suits visitors who value a broad Tianchi view, alpine flowers and the Jinjiang Grand Canyon and can manage a substantial stair climb, but lighter crowds do not automatically make the route easier.
When the West Slope summit trail is open, the Tianchi viewpoint requires a long stair climb. The actual entry point, transport bundle, stair route and summit status depend on the purchased product and same-day notice. The climb requires moderate fitness. Travellers with knee, heart, respiratory or balance limitations should choose another route.
Jinjiang Grand Canyon is a volcanic fracture landscape. When its marked route is open under current weather, path and seasonal controls, it serves as a core West Slope attraction and an alternative when Tianchi cannot be seen; follow the day's notice for the open boardwalk, walking direction and accessible distance.
Treat the Alpine Garden as a mountain-and-grassland stop unless a current official bloom report confirms that the year’s temperature, precipitation and open route support a flower visit.
Wangchi is a volcanic lake with surrounding vegetation. Iris Garden and Tizi River add seasonal and volcanic-landscape interest. Treat them as part of a West Slope day when current shuttle and trail arrangements permit, not as separate must-see detours that justify missing the final return.
West Slope ticketing, Chixi/Baixi tourism transport, park shuttle buses and seasonal uphill services can be split, so confirm every part before leaving Songjianghe. Use the current West Slope boarding point, departure time and last return rather than a previously published minute estimate, because season, road controls, queues and weather can change the journey.
Choosing Between North and West
North Slope offers a closer, higher-angle Tianchi view, more developed facilities, waterfall, hot springs and underground forest; summit access uses the transfer centre when open. West Slope offers the broader lake view, alpine garden and canyon. When the summit trail operates, reaching its viewpoint requires a long stair climb. North may be the more practical first selection when variety and established transfers matter; West suits travellers specifically willing to climb for the open view.
Because North Slope and West Slope are not adjacent gates, give each one full sightseeing day, use Erdaobaihe for the North base and Songjianghe or Chixi for the West base, and add a transfer day or at least a transition night for the accommodation change. If Tianchi matters, keep the North–West order flexible after checking official weather and operating notices.
Tianchi Visibility and Timing
Tianchi visibility cannot be promised. Clouds, wind, rain, cold and operational safety decisions affect the lake; entering the scenic area is not the same as seeing Tianchi. Summer and autumn may be more comfortable, but queues can be longer. Winter scenery is dramatic, while summit transfers and outdoor stays are more vulnerable to weather.
Review the official attraction status, weather warnings and short-range forecast close to departure. Do not assume that a particular hour is more reliable: the day’s wind, fog, capacity and park dispatch determine whether and when a summit attempt is possible. Staying one or two extra nights creates another attempt. Use official mini-program notices, on-site broadcasts and summit-vehicle status rather than informal drivers.
If the summit or Tianchi vehicle stops, do not argue with staff or follow anyone around a closure. On North Slope, shift to Changbai Waterfall, Green Deep Pool and Underground Forest where open. On West Slope, use Jinjiang Grand Canyon, Alpine Garden or Wangchi where open. A closure is a route change, not a failure that needs a dangerous workaround.
Do not label fixed months or a time of day as “best”. Tianchi ice, cloud, foliage and summit access are year- and day-specific. Check recent official scenery or phenology updates and weather warnings, then retain enough margin for transfer queues and the final connection. If flowers, autumn colour, snow or blue ice are the main purpose, travel only with a backup that still works when that feature is absent.
Hot Springs
At Julong, the hot springs are seen rather than soaked in. Hot-spring eggs and corn are available only when indicated by the scenic area's same-day notices and on-site service. Keep children away from hot outlets and cooking areas, follow barriers and warnings, and do not mistake the display for a bathing pool.
Hotels near Erdaobaihe and resorts near West Slope may offer hot-spring facilities. Confirm the current operator, water description, indoor and outdoor pools, child and health restrictions, maintenance, price and cancellation terms directly. After skiing, cool down fully, rehydrate and assess your condition before deciding whether to soak. Do not drink before soaking. Follow the facility’s time guidance, leave immediately if dizzy, breathless or unwell, and seek medical advice for heart or blood-pressure conditions.
Skiing
Changbai Mountain Wanda International Resort near Songjianghe is a large integrated ski base. Run count, difficulty grading, lifts, carpets, night skiing and season dates change with snowmaking, snow cover, maintenance and safety checks. Before booking, use the resort’s current-day trail map and closure notice, and confirm rentals, lessons, insurance, deposits, transfers, inclusions and cancellation terms.
Travellers based near Erdaobaihe may consider Heping Ski Resort or Changbai Mountain Red Pine King Ski Resort (长白山红松王滑雪场), but should not assume either one is operating or suitable. Do not rely on historical run counts or difficulty mixes. For any resort, verify the season’s open terrain, grading, rentals, lessons, insurance, child rules and transport through the operator. Hire a coach if new, and do not treat a nominally easy run as a substitute for cold-weather preparation.
Changbai winter can bring extreme cold, strong wind and low visibility. Dress in professional moisture-managing and insulating layers suited to the day’s wind chill, with ski clothing, goggles, waterproof footwear and dry spares. Carry batteries close to the body and keep a warm indoor alternative if transport or lifts suspend operation.
Korean-Chinese Food
North Slope and Erdaobaihe are in Antu County, Yanbian Korean Autonomous Prefecture, while West Slope and Songjianghe are in Fusong County, Baishan City. Korean-Chinese food is therefore easiest to make a major theme when the route includes Yanji or Erdaobaihe. Try Yanji cold noodles, stone-pot rice, barbecue, kimchi, rice sausage, pounded rice cake, ginseng chicken soup and soybean-paste soup according to appetite and restaurant availability. Songjianghe has its own dining base; Yanji works better as a dedicated food extension than as an add-on to a West Slope day.
Transport
Changbai Mountain Airport is generally the more convenient air gateway for the West side, while Changbaishan railway station is generally better placed for Erdaobaihe and North Slope. Routes, operating days, stops and seasonal services change. Confirm flights with the airline and airport, trains through Railway 12306, and onward transport with the current local operator. Select the gateway by slope, not just by the cheapest ticket.
Do not rely on fixed drive or shuttle times. Estimate from current navigation, road works, snow and ice controls, charging or fuel needs and weather warnings. For North Slope, verify the designated Chibei/Erdaobaihe collection point, tourism bus, admission point and last return. For West Slope, verify the designated Chixi or Baixi collection point, road restrictions, admission point and last return. Add margin for mountain conditions and queues.
Where to Stay
Erdaobaihe is the main North Slope accommodation base with hotels and guesthouses. Wanda Resort is an integrated West Slope base, while Songjianghe is a town-based West option. Compare actual rate, room type, heating, transfer, breakfast and cancellation terms before booking.
Practical Tips
Bring a thick layer and rain gear even in summer because Tianchi can be windy and cold. Use sunscreen at altitude. Book early for public holidays, school breaks and officially announced events, favour cancellable rooms, and use official ticket channels rather than third-party “guaranteed ticket”, ticket-grabbing or early-entry claims. Follow the booked admission time, do not cross barriers, do not fly drones, and obey all border, research and conservation instructions.
Suggested Itineraries
Full North Slope day. Use the booked entry window and follow the park's current shuttle order; do not add a West Slope or Yanji transfer. Visit the summit viewpoint only when park staff permit. If it closes, use open lower stops such as Changbai Waterfall, Julong Hot Springs, Green Deep Pool and Small Tianchi. Underground Forest and the “valley-bottom forest” are the same forest stop, so visit it only once. You may not reach every attraction; leave enough time to catch the last official return shuttle.
Full West Slope day. Give West Slope a separate full day for the summit stairs, Jinjiang Grand Canyon and whichever garden or Wangchi routes are open. The day's notice determines whether the viewpoint is open, how visitors reach it and the order of stops. Anyone with knee, heart, respiratory or balance limitations should not attempt the stairs. Consult a current official bloom report rather than assigning flowers to a fixed month.
A Workable North–West Sequence
Day one: Spend a full day on North Slope and stay on the Erdaobaihe/Chibei side.
Day two: Transfer to the Songjianghe/Chixi side, check in and rest. Verify the actual service and road conditions; do not add either mountain gate.
Day three: Spend a full day on West Slope and stay on the West side. The sequence can be reversed to suit arrival transport, but each slope still receives a full day.
Adding Yanji. For both slopes plus Yanji, use at least five days: full North Slope day; base-transfer day; full West Slope day; dedicated transfer to Yanji with an overnight; then a Yanji city and food day. If visiting only one slope, remove the other slope and base-transfer day, but do not compress Yanji into the end of a mountain day. A Wanda stay may include a hot-spring visit after confirming that the facility is open, skiing when the slopes are operating, or forest walking on an open route. Keep a weather backup rather than treating any activity as fixed.
Seasonal Activities
Spring ice conditions and flowers, summer alpine blooms, and autumn foliage all require a recent official scenery or phenology check. Forest walking and camping are options only on open routes and at a lawful site that confirms fire controls. In winter, verify ski, hot-spring and summit operation on the day; rime and frozen-lake scenery are weather outcomes, not guaranteed products.
Winter Rafting Safety
Use only a lawful operator that is open that day and can identify the operating entity, applicable licence, permit or filing, insurance, complaints channel, open river section, rescue staff and shore rescue points. Decline private solicitation and unlicensed rafting. Before paying, obtain the operator’s current minimum and maximum age, height, guardian and health rules. Children, older adults, pregnant travellers, and people with cardiovascular disease, high blood pressure, epilepsy, serious respiratory illness, recent surgery, or impaired mobility or balance should obtain medical advice and still require operator acceptance. If the rule is unclear or the operator declines the participant, do not board.
Wear a correctly sized, undamaged and fully fastened life jacket throughout; add a helmet, waterproof insulated clothing, gloves and slip-resistant footwear whenever required. Attend the safety briefing and confirm the raft, safety rope, communications and rescue cover. Bring a full dry change and confirm changing, warming and emergency-transfer arrangements at the finish. For soaked insulation, persistent shivering, loss of hand function, slowed responses, dizziness, chest discomfort or breathing difficulty, alert raft or shore safety staff immediately. Remain in the raft and follow instructions to a designated landing or rescue point; do not enter the water or leave the raft independently. If thrown into the water, use the life jacket for flotation, call for help and wait for rescue. Once rescued or ashore, remove wet clothing, put on dry layers, warm gradually and seek urgent medical assessment for continuing shivering, confusion, slowed responses, chest discomfort or breathing difficulty; use the operator's emergency transfer rather than continuing the activity. Cancel or reschedule for high wind, heavy snow, lightning, poor visibility, sudden cold, abnormal water flow or ice, channel obstruction, missing rescue or communications capacity, or any operator, weather-service or regulator suspension. Rime is never guaranteed and does not justify unsafe operation.
Photography
Tianchi has different North and West views. Changbai Waterfall, Alpine Garden, Underground Forest, winter rime and snow are core subjects. A wide lens suits lake and flower scenes; a longer lens suits mountain detail. A tripod is useful for low light where permitted, and a polarising filter can reduce snow glare. Protect batteries in cold conditions and do not leave the open route for a composition.
Yanji Extension
Travel between Yanji and Erdaobaihe or the North Slope is a separate transfer. Reaching Songjianghe or West Slope uses a different route, so neither should be assigned a generic “Yanji to Changbai” drive time. Give Yanji its own transfer or overnight day rather than treating it as dinner after a mountain day. Chinese Korean Folk Customs Park (中国朝鲜族民俗园), the area around Yanbian University, Yanji Bridge and West Market can fill a city stay when open. When it is open, the park may offer a traditional Korean ethnic clothing experience; confirm current access, service boundaries and photography rules. Choose restaurants by food type, then verify current operation, queue policy, posted prices and allergen information before visiting.
