Liaoyuan is a small city in Jilin that rewards one or two unhurried days. Its urban route links the Liaoyuan Miners' Tomb Exhibition Hall, Longshou Mountain and Kuixing Tower, Liaoyuan Municipal Museum and the Dongliao River. Attractions in Dongliao County and Dongfeng County require a separate day and dependable return transport; the point is to understand Liaoyuan's mining memory and present-day life, not to maximise the number of stops.
How to Position the Trip
- On a first visit, prioritise the Liaoyuan Miners' Tomb Exhibition Hall and the Longshou Mountain group. The memorial site demands serious attention, while Longshou Mountain combines Liaoyuan Municipal Museum, a city viewpoint and local recreation.
- Keep a one-day itinerary inside Liaoyuan's urban districts. Cilu Lake, Dongfeng Peasant Painting Gallery and Zhalanfenwei Folk Culture Park lie on county routes and should not become improvised late-afternoon detours.
- Even travellers with little interest in mining history should use the Liaoyuan Miners' Tomb Exhibition Hall to understand the city. Afterwards, a Dongliao River walk or an ordinary local meal provides a gentler change of pace.
- Sika deer farming is an important industry in the wider Liaoyuan and Dongfeng area. Learn about the industry and local culture, but do not treat velvet antler or another deer product as medical advice.

Its displays cover coal extraction under the Japanese occupation, the treatment of forced labourers and Liaoyuan's mining history. Allow enough time to read the exhibition and understand the remains instead of using the site for a quick photograph.
Inside the Miners' Tomb Exhibition Hall, keep quiet and do not touch displays or memorial structures. Human remains, commemoration and mourning must not become entertainment or sensational storytelling. Parents should assess the material before bringing young children and be ready to explain its historical setting.
Longshou Mountain, Kuixing Tower and Liaoyuan Municipal Museum
Use the formal map name Longshou Mountain; searching for the easily confused “Longshan Park” can lead to the wrong place. Longshou Mountain is in Longshan District, on the opposite side of the city route from the memorial site in Xi'an District, so allow time for the transfer. Kuixing Tower is a Liaoyuan landmark, and Liaoyuan Municipal Museum is housed in the associated Kuixing Tower complex.
Park access does not guarantee that Kuixing Tower, every gallery or an upper level is open. Rain and snow make the Longshou Mountain steps slippery, and winter afternoons turn cold early; travellers with limited stamina can visit the museum and shorten the hill circuit.
Dongliao River and Xiaoshi Street
For a low-key view of Liaoyuan life, choose a maintained section of the Dongliao River promenade and stay back from any unprotected bank. Xiaoshi Street and other renewed urban blocks are useful for a meal or rest, but their businesses change quickly. A single social-media shop is not worth displacing the Miners' Tomb Exhibition Hall or forcing a cross-city detour.
Choosing a County Day
Cilu Lake in Dongliao County
Cilu Lake is a wetland and rural-leisure option in Dongliao County. Ask what is open that day and whether any birdwatching or visitor activity is operating. Remain in public areas around Cilu Lake: do not cross into wetland habitat, chase birds or feed them for a close photograph.
Without a private vehicle, arrange the complete Liaoyuan–Cilu Lake round trip before leaving the city. If the return depends on finding an ad-hoc ride after arrival, shorten the visit or stay in urban Liaoyuan.
The Dongfeng County cultural route
Dongfeng Peasant Painting Gallery, Zhalanfenwei Folk Culture Park and a sika-deer industry visit can form one Dongfeng County day. Exhibitions, performances and hands-on activities do not necessarily operate daily, so confirm the exact venues before committing the journey.
At a Dongfeng deer-product, alcohol or farm-goods shop, check the business identity, label, price, return conditions and shipping arrangement. Reject claims that a deer product can cure illness or is essential for health.

One day in urban Liaoyuan
Visit the Liaoyuan Miners' Tomb Exhibition Hall in Xi'an District in the morning and return to the central city for lunch. In the afternoon, cross to Longshan District for Longshou Mountain, Kuixing Tower and Liaoyuan Municipal Museum. Add a short Dongliao River walk only if weather and daylight permit; if the museum is closed, shorten the mountain visit rather than setting off for a county attraction.
Two unhurried days
Use day one for the Liaoyuan city-history route and sleep in the urban area. On day two, choose either Cilu Lake in Dongliao County or the cultural route in Dongfeng County after confirming weather and a return vehicle. If conditions are poor, keep the second day in Liaoyuan for local food, rest and whichever indoor venue is open.
A stop on a central Jilin journey
Liaoyuan can make a one-night stop when travelling from Changchun, Siping or Meihekou. Use the arrival period for Longshou Mountain or the Dongliao River, then reserve a full daytime period for the Miners' Tomb Exhibition Hall. A hurried visit after a late arrival does not give the memorial site the time it deserves.
Transport and Accommodation
- Liaoyuan Railway Station is the rail arrival point, but hotels, Longshou Mountain and the main dining areas still require a local connection. Check a hotel's actual map position rather than relying on a “railway-station district” label.
- Buses, walking and regulated ride-hailing can cover the urban sights. The Miners' Tomb Exhibition Hall is in Xi'an District and Longshou Mountain is in Longshan District, so a one-day route needs a realistic cross-district transfer.
- A licensed charter or self-drive is more dependable for Dongliao County, Dongfeng County and rural sites. Before booking a vehicle to Cilu Lake or the Dongfeng cultural route, put waiting time, return time, tolls, parking and winter rerouting in the agreement.
- Areas around Liaoyuan Railway Station, Renmin Street and the main commercial districts are practical bases. In winter, confirm heating, hot water, parking and cancellation; for a county stay, also verify late check-in and nearby food.
Food and Purchases
Liaoyuan offers the usual northeastern staples: Dongbei dishes, guobaorou, stews, barbecue and dumplings. Portions can be large, so order modestly first; ask for meat to be thoroughly cooked and check peanuts, sesame, seafood seasonings and cross-contact for children or anyone with allergies.
For Dongfeng deer products, Liaoyuan hosiery, grains or a peasant painting, request an itemised receipt. Follow the label on any health food, and do not rely on a salesperson when pregnancy, an existing condition or medication makes a purchase medically relevant.
Safety and Etiquette
- Keep the Liaoyuan Miners' Tomb site solemn: no loud behaviour, playful posing or photography where the exhibition restricts it.
- Do not enter an abandoned mine, active work area, closed building or unmanaged shaft around Liaoyuan, and reject offers of an “inside visit”.
