Before you go: opening, weather and safety checks Use this page for planning. Tickets, reservations, opening arrangements, transport, weather, prices and safety requirements should be confirmed through official notices, authorised platforms and on-site information.

1. Build the Trip Around the Border City, Then Pick Mountain or Sea

Dandong's urban sights cluster along the Yalu River. The Yalu River Broken Bridge, the public waterfront and the Memorial Hall of the War to Resist US Aggression and Aid Korea can fill one focused day. The long transfers begin when you add Fenghuang Mountain in Fengcheng, the forests and river roads of Kuandian, or Donggang and the offshore islands. For a first visit, the most practical two- or three-day trip is the city plus one outer route, not a sweep of every mountain, island and Great Wall stop.

Choose by priority:

Views across the Yalu River do not grant permission to cross. Any Dandong cross-border trip, port use, document requirement or organized tour depends on current rules from the relevant authorities and a formally authorized operator, so availability cannot be assumed.

2. Use Separate Forecasts for River, Mountain and Sea

Review forecasts separately for central Dandong, Fengcheng, Kuandian or Donggang. A forecast for central Dandong does not describe conditions on Fenghuang Mountain, in a Kuandian gorge, beside the Yalu River and at sea.

3. Choose Between the City, Fengcheng, Kuandian and Donggang

Central Yalu River route | One day The Broken Bridge, riverfront and memorial hall form the strongest city sequence. The Yalu River Broken Bridge provides a physical historical site, while the Memorial Hall supplies the wider context and a natural pause for lunch. Access to the Broken Bridge, riverfront lighting, Yalu River cruises and Memorial Hall reservations can change, so confirm each close to departure. Jinjiangshan Park or Moon Island is an optional city extra, not an essential part of the day.

Hushan direction | Half day to one day Hushan Great Wall lies in Hushan Town in Kuandian County and pairs well with the city waterfront as a route about defensive history and border geography. The point commonly called "One Step Across" is a named scenic marker/viewing point, not permission to cross a fence, boundary or controlled area. Paths, displays and viewpoints at Hushan may change with weather, maintenance or border management.

Fenghuang Mountain | One full day Fenghuang Mountain is known for steep paths and sections that feel highly exposed. At Fenghuang Mountain, visitors may combine walking with a cableway or internal transfer when those services are operating, but the route still needs a day-of check. Anyone with a fear of heights, knee or ankle problems, young children, or wet and icy conditions should not treat Laoniubei or other exposed sections as mandatory. A shorter route with a night in Fengcheng can make the day far less rushed.

Kuandian landscapes | At least one day; overnight for depth Qingshangou, Tianqiaogou and other Kuandian nature areas are not next to one another. A day trip from central Dandong involves substantial road time. Foliage, winter sports, lake boats and internal shuttles at Qingshangou and Tianqiaogou are seasonal. Self-drive or a licensed car is usually more workable than trying to connect several Kuandian sites by public transport. Choose either Qingshangou or Tianqiaogou as the main park and obey every parking, weather and border-control sign along riverside roads.

Donggang and the islands | One day for Donggang; flexible time for an island Donggang suits seafood markets and a lighter coastal day. For Dalu Island or Zhangdao, first identify the operator's actual passenger terminal, outbound and return tickets, ID requirements, baggage rules and weather-refund terms. A Dalu Island or Zhangdao day trip needs a protected return seat and a Donggang fallback. An island overnight can reduce rushing, but only after the accommodation explains transfers, meals and what happens if sailings are suspended.

4. Give Each Day One Non-Negotiable Activity

One day in the city Use the morning for the memorial hall if that matches the reserved entry slot, then continue to the Broken Bridge and public riverfront. For an afternoon Memorial Hall reservation, visit the Broken Bridge first. Keep a Yalu River cruise and decorative lighting optional, and do not compress the transfer to Dandong Railway Station at the end of the day.

Two days: city and Fenghuang Mountain Complete the Broken Bridge, memorial hall and waterfront on day one. Leave early for Fengcheng on day two and select a mountain route that matches the group. Day-trippers should decide their turnaround and return transport before starting the climb. Staying in Fengcheng is sensible if the alternative is rushing the descent.

Two days: city and Hushan Use day one for the city's historical route and day two for Hushan Great Wall, returning for a park, meal or slower river walk. This is far more realistic than adding deep Kuandian on the same day. If border access or hill conditions change, substitute city museums and a meal in Donggang.

Three to four days: forest or island Use day one for central Dandong and day two for either Fenghuang Mountain or Hushan. Then choose between one Kuandian nature area and a Donggang island plan. An overnight reduces a Kuandian road marathon; an island requires spare time for suspension or rebooking. With an inflexible departure ticket, spend the final night back in Dandong or near the relevant station.

5. Secure the Return Before Traveling Outward

Dandong Railway Station is the main city rail hub, within an easy transfer of the station district and riverfront. Flights and ground transport at Dandong Langtou Airport vary by date, so use the airport only when an actual service fits the trip. For Fenghuang Mountain, compare rail toward Fengcheng, the local connection and a through car after checking current railway and local transport listings.

Hushan, Kuandian's nature parks and Donggang's island terminals do not fall on one convenient route. In Kuandian, road distances are long and public transport may not support several attractions in one day. For an island, calculate the entire chain: city to terminal, check-in and waiting, sailing, return check-in and the trip back to the city. A short straight-line distance on the map is misleading.

Book cars through a formal channel and record vehicle details, insurance, waiting time, tolls and parking, night service, cancellation and severe-weather handling. Along the river and in the mountains, stop only in designated areas, never beside border installations, working docks, bridge approaches or blind bends for a photograph.

6. Choose a Base for the Hardest Day

During holidays and foliage season, open the detailed rate rules instead of relying on a "free cancellation" badge. Check the exact deadline, prepayment and whether weather disruption qualifies.

7. Treat Seafood as a Purchase, Not Just a Meal

Dandong is a good place to try Korean-Chinese cold noodles, barbecue, stone-pot rice, rice cakes and kimchi, as well as yellow clams, fish and other seafood. Strawberries are commonly associated with winter and spring supply, while chestnuts are an autumn product, but timing and quality vary with weather, source and storage.

Before ordering in a seafood restaurant or market, confirm the species, condition, pricing unit, weight, preparation fee and cooking method. Clams, oysters and sea snails should be thoroughly cooked. A restaurant's coastal location does not prove that every ingredient is local or landed that day. Before carrying seafood, strawberries or cooked food home, match packaging and cold storage to the full journey time.

For food, medicine, alcohol, tobacco, cosmetics or souvenirs presented as imported, check the lawful sales channel, Chinese labeling where required, receipt and carriage restrictions. A "border goods" label is not proof of origin or authenticity. Never attempt an informal exchange, delivery or trade across the river.

8. Read the Weather Clauses Before Paying

The main cost variables are intercity transport, self-drive or a car to remote areas, admission and internal shuttles, cableways, river cruises or island boats, accommodation and seafood. A city day is easiest to control. Fenghuang Mountain costs vary with route and transport choices, while Kuandian and island plans add long transfers, overnights and possible weather-related changes.

A useful booking order is: secure the journey out of Dandong, reserve accommodation with workable cancellation, choose one of Fenghuang Mountain, Kuandian or an island, then buy the matching transport and admission. For the memorial hall, Broken Bridge, Yalu River cruises, mountain equipment and island boats, verify the date, ID rules, ticket collection, child or senior terms, weather cancellation and refund method through the responsible official channel.

Do not treat a travel agent's verbal assurance, archived news coverage or a social-media post as proof that a cross-border product will operate. Only current information from the authorities and an appropriately authorized provider can support that decision. Until it is verified, do not buy non-refundable connecting transport or hotels.

9. Separate What You Can See From What You May Photograph

10. Complete a Border, Mountain and Ferry Check

One week out, decide whether the single main route beyond the city will be Fenghuang Mountain, Hushan, Kuandian or an island. Keep one indoor or Donggang fallback day, and check ID validity, departure transport and hotel cancellation deadlines.

Review the following the day before:

Secure the Dandong return connection before adding a Yalu River cruise, night lighting or a second attraction. If border access, Fenghuang Mountain conditions or an island sailing cannot be confirmed, use the central Dandong route instead.

How should travellers use Separate Forecasts for River, mountain and sea?

Spring: Comfortable for city walks, while shaded mountain paths may remain cold and slippery. Flowering dates around Fenghuang Mountain and Kuandian vary with the year's temperatures. Summer: Humidity, heavy rain, thunderstorms, river fog and poor marine visibility can all disrupt plans. Keep off exposed mountain sections during storms, expect road controls in Kuandian when conditions deteriorate, and treat every island departure as conditional. Autumn: Foliage, ginkgo color and chestnuts draw weekend crowds. Color progression in Kuandian changes each year, so arrange parking, accommodation and return tickets around current reports rather than a fixed calendar. Winter: The riverfront is windy and mountain paths can ice over. Yalu River cruises and Donggang island links may reduce operations, making the memorial hall, local food and shorter waterfront walks the more reliable core.
