Yilan is close to Taipei, but a weekend cannot comfortably contain hot springs, Guishan Island, Taipingshan, family farms and Nanfang'ao. Movement across the Lanyang Plain is comparatively easy; sea and mountain plans depend on swell, mist, roads and transfers. A short trip should choose Jiaoxi and Toucheng, Luodong and Wujie, or Su'ao and one mountain direction.
Shape the trip
For a first one-night visit, stay in Jiaoxi for hot springs and the Toucheng coast, or in Luodong for the night market, traditional arts and family venues. A third day can add either Su'ao and Nanfang'ao or Taipingshan. Guishan Island, whale watching and Taipingshan all require current weather, opening and transport and should not all be compulsory.
In Yilan, families should choose one major farm, traditional-arts venue or long indoor attraction each day. Older travellers and those with limited mobility may find Jiaoxi, Yilan City and Luodong easier. Taipingshan, Cuifeng Lake and more remote mountains need a separate plan for accommodation, road, transfer and warmth.
Choose a season and weather fallback
Spring is often wet and suits Jiaoxi hot springs, the National Center for Traditional Arts and slower Lanyang Plain travel. Waiao coast and Taipingshan paths can be slippery. Summer brings heat, typhoons, thunderstorms and heavy swell affecting Guishan Island, whale boats, surfing and mountain roads; start outside early and use indoor afternoons. Autumn can suit the coast and plain cycling while the northeast monsoon remains relevant. Winter is popular in Jiaoxi, but Taipingshan requires preparation for low temperature, fog and changing road conditions.
Toucheng sea state and Taipingshan weather may be completely different. Check land, marine, strong-wind and typhoon information, then consult notices from the port, forestry venue, highway authority and tour operator. When boats stop, switch to Jiaoxi, Yilan City or Luodong. When the mountain road is controlled, do not use a side road to bypass it.
Pick areas and make trade-offs
Jiaoxi combines hot springs, walking and one currently open light waterfall or forest stop. Toucheng, Waiao and Wushi Harbour support the coast, Lanyang Museum, surfing or a boat. At Waiao and other Yilan beaches, flags, rescue provision and instructor decide whether entering the water is suitable. Landing on Guishan Island, sailing around it and whale watching are different products; confirm permit, pier, suspension and refund separately.
Luodong, Wujie and Dongshan combine the night market, traditional arts, rivers, parks and family farms. Yilan City and Yuanshan offer culture, the distillery area and agriculture. Su'ao and Nanfang'ao focus on cold springs, harbour life and seafood; stay off rocks during wind and swell. Taipingshan, Mingchi and other mountain directions are not casual extensions of the plain. Choose one highland destination for a day.
Build an itinerary that works
A one-night break can reach Jiaoxi from Taipei, use the first afternoon for a booked bath and town walk, then visit Toucheng and Lanyang Museum on day two, adding the coast only in suitable weather. An alternative stays in Luodong, gives day one to traditional arts or Dongshan, chooses one night market and visits one family farm before returning.
With two nights, use one night in Jiaoxi and one in Luodong, dividing Toucheng, Yilan City and the plain. Add Taipingshan or Su'ao only on a fourth day. A Guishan or whale-boat day should not connect tightly to the return train. Start a Taipingshan day early and keep a wet-weather alternative.
Arrive and move around
TRA serves Toucheng, Jiaoxi, Yilan, Luodong, Dongshan and Su'ao. Highway coaches use the Hsuehshan Tunnel from Taipei, but holiday congestion can change arrival time. County buses and shuttles reach major places, while mountain, farm and coastal intervals need segment-by-segment confirmation. Between Su'ao, Nanfang'ao and Dongshan River, plan backward from the real return service and allow extra time for holiday congestion. Avoid a tight non-refundable connection on the first or last day.
Drivers should check tunnel control, rain, fog, mountain rockfall, coastal parking and fatigue. A hired car needs licensed operation, route, insurance, waiting, overtime and closure terms. Before cycling, inspect brakes and lights and confirm the return point and rain rule; avoid a coastal ride in strong wind, heavy rain or darkness.
For a boat from Wushi Harbour, confirm the transfer from Toucheng Station to the check-in point and the required early arrival. After returning, allow time for luggage, washing and the next connection. Public transport towards Taipingshan is limited; without a workable return, stay in the mountains or abandon the day trip rather than applying Lanyang Plain bus intervals to a highland route.
Select a useful base
Jiaoxi suits hot springs, rail and car-free travellers. Ask whether bathing is in-room or communal, whether a reservation is needed, how cleaning works and what rules apply to children and older guests. Luodong fits the night market, traditional arts and the plain; Yilan City is quieter and useful for cultural sites. Toucheng and Waiao suit the coast and early boats. These Yilan coast bases have fewer late meals and greater weather exposure.
Su'ao supports harbour and cold-spring travel. A mountain room requires confirmed road, transfer, dinner, heating, communication and cancellation. Check the real orientation and obstruction of a sea- or mountain-view room. Prefer clear change terms during typhoons or whenever a boat or mountain day is central.
Eat and shop with context
Scallion dishes, smoked duck, pastries, bu rou, seafood and market snacks can be eaten along the route. At a night market, look for displayed prices, cooking and manageable queues. At Nanfang'ao, confirm seafood item, weight, pricing, preparation and total. Ask about peanut, sesame, seafood, dairy and shared cookware when allergies matter.
For pastries, tea, farm goods or seafood products, read producer, ingredients, net weight, storage, cold-chain needs and receipt. A farm activity should explain materials, animal interaction, child restrictions and wet-weather arrangements. Fresh food needs a realistic return and destination quarantine plan. Avoid untraceable wild products.
Reserve and control the budget
Book the room, intercity transport, Guishan or whale boat and mountain transfer before ordinary attractions. Boats, hot springs, farms, traditional arts and forestry venues have separate meeting points, tickets, equipment, insurance, age or health limits, weather cancellation and refunds. Use current event notices only.
Separate Taipei access, county transport, room, boat or mountain activity, meals and shopping, plus a weather reserve. Holiday tunnel delay, a hot-spring room, boat cancellation and an unplanned driver are the main variables. Compare staying in Jiaoxi or Luodong with repeated commuting, and do not use old admission or room prices as a ceiling.
Stay safe and travel respectfully
Follow beach flags, rescue and port controls and do not enter the sea or rocks during heavy swell, lightning or strong wind. Descend during mountain fog, heavy rain, rockfall or cold-weather control, carrying warm and waterproof layers, a light and offline navigation. Use hot and cold springs within personal tolerance and facility rules, never after alcohol or when unwell.
Temples, fishing harbours, farms and communities remain working spaces, so ask before photographing people or operations. Travellers with limited mobility should verify TRA, low-floor transport, accessible rooms, vessel boarding, trails and bathing facilities separately; conditions can differ within one attraction.
Final checklist
These primary entry points were rechecked on 31 August 2026: the TRA timetable for Toucheng, Jiaoxi, Yilan, Luodong and Su'ao; the Highway Bureau live provincial-road service for the Hsuehshan Tunnel and mountain roads; the official Guishan landing and whale-watching notice for Wushi Harbour boundaries; and Taipingshan opening information for park and road periods. Confirm the ticketed boat separately and recheck sea state on the Central Weather Administration marine platform. An unclear boat, road or park result triggers the Lanyang Plain fallback.
Two days before departure, recheck TRA or coach, tunnel traffic, sea state, boats, mountain roads, room and activities. Save the Wushi Harbour pier, transfer, last service, cancellation and emergency contact. Keep one Lanyang Plain fallback for the sea day and another for the Taipingshan day.
Pack rain and sun protection, a wind and warm layer, shoes with grip, water, regular medication and a power bank. The final test is one principal area per day, a complete plain itinerary after boat or road cancellation, and enough return margin for congestion and weather.
