Xuancheng is a multi-county southern Anhui destination built around Xuan paper, Hui-style villages, poetry and heritage, caves, mountain roads, and the Hui-Hang Ancient Trail. Jingting Mountain, Chaji, Longchuan, Taiji Cave, Taohuatan, Jing County, Jixi, Guangde, and Ningguo do not form one compact circuit. Choose a county-level route first, then protect the final return or overnight base.
Who Xuancheng Suits
Xuancheng suits travellers interested in the Four Treasures of the Study, traditional craft, Hui architecture, village life, Chinese poetry, Red Army history, light mountain walking, or a road trip through southern Anhui. Families can use a paper-making workshop or Taiji Cave as a focused day. Experienced walkers can plan the Hui-Hang Ancient Trail as a separate trip.
It is not suitable for a one-day sweep of Jingting Mountain, Chaji, Longchuan, Taiji Cave, Taohuatan, and Ningguo. Those places are spread across Xuanzhou, Jing County, Jixi, Guangde, and Ningguo. Travellers who cannot accept wet stone, mountain roads, or a hotel change should choose one city or county base and a shorter route.
Choose One Main Area
- Xuanzhou: Jingting Mountain, city museums, Wanzhou history, and an easy urban food stop.
- Jing County: Xuan paper culture, Chaji, Taohuatan, the former New Fourth Army headquarters at Yunling, and mountain or rafting products.
- Jixi: Longchuan, clan and ancestral-hall heritage, Hui cuisine, and the Hui-Hang Ancient Trail.
- Guangde: Taiji Cave and the mountain landscape near the Anhui-Zhejiang-Jiangsu border.
- Ningguo: Qinglong Bay, Fangtang, forest roads, and the routes marketed around the southern Anhui scenic drive.
Do not use Xuancheng city as a universal day-trip base without adding the real county transfer. Jing County or Jixi accommodation can save time when two consecutive days are in that county; otherwise one city base may be simpler.
Season and Risk Decisions
Spring and autumn suit villages, paper-making visits, mountain scenery, and road trips. Summer can suit caves, rafting, and higher countryside, but the plum-rain season and thunderstorms add flood, rockfall, slippery-road, and river-level risks. Winter villages can be quiet, while rural roads and old stone lanes may be icy; check heating and hot water before booking a guesthouse.
Village houses, ancestral halls, bridges, former headquarters, carved stone, timber structures, and paper workshops all have heritage or working-craft boundaries. Follow current signs and staff instructions for access, photography, touching, and workshop participation.
Jingting Mountain and Xuanzhou
Jingting Mountain is the easiest cultural introduction from Xuancheng city. Use half a day for a measured walk, poetry context, views, and any open temple or heritage area. Add a city museum or meal only if opening and transport align.
Review the current trail, parking, temple, event, and maintenance notice. Do not climb or touch protected structures such as the Guangjiao Temple Twin Pagodas. Stone steps can be slippery after rain; families and older travellers should choose a shorter ascent and preserve energy for the return.
Chaji and Taohuatan
Chaji is a living village of Hui houses, ancestral halls, lanes, streams, and long-standing resident life. It deserves a slow half day rather than a photo stop. Verify tickets, parking, guided visits, restoration areas, and arrangements for large sketching groups. Keep doorways and narrow lanes clear, and do not point a camera into private rooms or courtyards.
Taohuatan adds literary history, a riverbank, old streets, and a possible ferry or performance product. Ferry operation, waterside access, events, and parking can change. Do not enter unmanaged water or assume that a water activity is included. Chaji and Taohuatan can share a day only when road time and the final check-in or return remain comfortable.
Xuan Paper Culture and the New Fourth Army Site
The Xuan Paper Culture Park and related Jing County workshops can explain raw materials, pulping, sheet forming, drying, and the distinctions among finished products. Verify the exhibition, demonstration, hands-on class, group reservation, duration, material, take-home work, and price before booking.
For paper, Xuan brushes, Hui ink, or inkstones, compare origin, craft, grade, label, packaging, receipt, and after-sales terms. A workshop demonstration does not prove every item in the shop has the same origin or process.
The former New Fourth Army headquarters at Yunling is a serious historical and memorial site. Confirm closure, restoration, interpretation, and group arrangements. Keep quiet, do not eat in exhibition rooms, and do not touch the display or historic fabric.
Longchuan and Jixi
Longchuan is a heritage village known for clan architecture, arches, waterways, and Hui-style settlement. It is more useful with interpretation than as a generic ancient-town walk. Check the open ancestral halls, exhibitions, restoration areas, guiding, and crowd controls. Do not touch carved wood, stone, plaques, or fragile surfaces.
Jixi is also a practical base for Hui cuisine and the Hui-Hang Ancient Trail. Mountain roads are winding, so a day that includes Longchuan should not end with an unverified late trail transfer.
Taiji Cave
Taiji Cave suits families, cave enthusiasts, and a hot-weather indoor route. The cave can include wet floors, steps, narrow sections, and a boat segment depending on the current operation. Check the route, final entry, boat, maintenance, and interpretation before departure.
Wear shoes with grip, remain on the managed route, and never touch formations. Heavy rain can also affect roads and outdoor access around a cave even when the interior seems weather-proof.
Hui-Hang Ancient Trail
The Hui-Hang Ancient Trail is for travellers with hiking experience, suitable footwear, a weather plan, and confirmed transport at both ends. It crosses a provincial boundary and should not be treated as an extra village walk.
Confirm the current open section, entry and exit, accommodation, food and water, phone coverage, rescue contact, baggage plan, and final transport. Do not enter alone at night, in a storm, or through an unofficial branch. If the weather or return cannot be confirmed, use Longchuan or a paper-culture day instead.
Two- and Three-Day Plans
Two days in Jing County
- Day 1: Xuan paper culture, then Taohuatan or a limited county route. Stay in a location that makes the second day realistic.
- Day 2: Choose Chaji or the former New Fourth Army headquarters. Add Jingting Mountain only if the return to Xuancheng remains comfortable.
Three days of Hui culture
- Day 1: Xuanzhou and Jingting Mountain.
- Day 2: Visit Jixi and Longchuan. Have a Hui meal, and avoid a late mountain transfer.
- Day 3: Choose a properly prepared Hui-Hang trail section or move to Jing County for Xuan paper. Do not force both into the same day.
Family weather-flexible plan
Use Taiji Cave, a paper-making session, and one village as the fixed anchors. Keep rafting, Qinglong Bay, and long mountain roads optional until weather, water level, and operator details are confirmed.
Four or five days in one county corridor
- Day 1: Arrive through Xuancheng or the station that serves the chosen county, settle into lodging and verify the next transfer and return.
- Day 2: Move to either Jing County or Jixi, not both. Check in and use one nearby cultural stop rather than forcing a full remote day after the transfer.
- Day 3: In Jing County, combine paper culture with either Taohuatan or Chaji. In Jixi, use Longchuan and a Hui meal without adding a late trail start.
- Day 4: Keep a same-county deeper visit or weather reserve. Use Yunling, another open village or a confirmed activity in Jing County; attempt a Hui-Hang trail section from Jixi only when both entrances, weather, supplies and the return are verified.
- Day 5: Return through a stable transport point and allow only a low-risk visit before departure. For four days, remove the reserve rather than compressing the final connection.
This plan changes hotels at most once. Jing County, Jixi, Guangde and Ningguo are route alternatives, not a circuit created by adding one day.
Transport and Return Buffer
Rail travellers can use Xuancheng, Jingxian, Jixi North, or Guangde according to the actual route. Buying a ticket to Xuancheng first can create an unnecessary backtrack if the trip is mainly in Jing County or Jixi.
For self-driving, allow extra time for bends, fog, rain, rockfall notices, village traffic, and limited parking. A visitor centre, village parking area, trail entrance, and accommodation may be several separate pins. For a charter or day tour, write down the vehicle, licensed operator, pickup, waiting, tolls, parking, route changes, and cancellation terms.
Finish a trail, rafting, or remote village day early enough to reach a stable station or hotel before dark. Do not build the departure day around a late rural connection.
For every transfer, identify where you arrive, where you will stay, the correct attraction or trail entrance, and a dependable place for the return. Record the boarding place, expected duration, latest departure, luggage plan and one fallback. Stay in Jing County or Jixi when two consecutive days are there; keep a Xuancheng city base for Jingting Mountain and urban visits. A service without an applicable date, boarding point and return time is not the only transport plan.
Where to Stay
Stay in Xuancheng city for rail access, urban services, and Jingting Mountain. Stay in Jing County when paper culture, Chaji, Taohuatan, or Yunling fills more than one day. Stay in Jixi for Longchuan and a prepared Hui-Hang route. A Ningguo or Guangde stay only makes sense when that county is the next day's main area.
Check parking, lift or stair access, sound insulation, hot water, heating or air-conditioning, breakfast time, late arrival, and cancellation. Rural photos do not show whether a guesthouse is near the correct entrance or whether winter heating is adequate.
Food, Shopping, and Budget
Local choices include Xuancheng potstickers, Jixi taguo flatbread, Hui-style yipin hotpot, Jing County qinyu fish, Ningguo hickory products, and southern Anhui home cooking. For fish, farmhouse meals, or group sets, check the weight, ingredients, cooking, service charge, and final price.
Budget for intercity rail or driving, county transfers, one or two hotel bases, attraction or workshop tickets, guiding, meals, and a weather reserve. Price any rafting, boat, trail transfer, or class separately. Keep receipts for paper, ink, brushes, stone products, tea, nuts, and other local goods.
Weather Alternatives and Common Mistakes
If rain raises flood or rockfall risk, drop rafting, streamside villages, unofficial mountain roads, and the trail. Use a paper workshop, an open museum, Taiji Cave if its access is confirmed, or a shorter city day. A closed heritage building does not justify entering through a side door or crossing a restoration barrier.
Common mistakes include treating all county sights as one Xuancheng city loop, buying rail to the wrong base, combining Longchuan with an unverified late trail start, assuming a paper demonstration certifies every shop item, entering village homes for photographs, and planning a rural return around the last possible vehicle.
Final Check
For the exact travel dates, recheck local culture and tourism notices, each attraction or operator, rail and road information, weather warnings, water levels, forest controls, restoration, and the final return. Remove a county or activity when it depends on poor weather, an unofficial road, or an unverified driver.
