Before travelling in 2026: These routes can involve interprovincial expressways, mountain weather, coastal swimming controls, grassland fire restrictions, river levels, ski operations, Beijing vehicle restrictions, parking reservations, and lodging cancellation terms. Recheck live navigation, official attraction notices, weather warnings, traffic rules, and booking terms shortly before departure. Tolls, parking, tickets, lifts, boats, ski products, rooms, and meals are all dynamic.

1. Preparing for the Drive

Vehicle

• Inspect tyres, including the spare, brakes, oil, coolant, battery, and lights.
• Carry a warning triangle, first-aid kit, extinguisher, inflator, and suitable recovery equipment.
• For winter routes toward Bashang or Chongli, check the forecast and road authority notices, and carry chains when required.
• Refuel early; services can be widely spaced on mountain and grassland roads.
• Confirm that the ETC account, vehicle classification and planned toll lanes are compatible; do not assume every route or lane will accept the setup without checking.

Documents and Insurance

• Carry the driver's licence, vehicle registration, and ID required for the journey.
• Vehicle insurance must be valid in every province on the route; keep the insurer's reporting number available.
• For rentals, check cross-province use, additional-driver rules, breakdown cover, and return conditions.

Navigation and Communications

• Download offline maps before entering mountain areas with weak reception.
• Cross-check live navigation against official closures and signs; a mapped road is not proof that a scenic road is open.
• Carry a charged power bank and vehicle charger.

Beijing Vehicle Restrictions

Beijing does not apply one citywide, all-day rule to every vehicle. Check the plate and vehicle class, the actual road and destination, the date and time, and any exemption before deciding whether tail-number, peak-hour or prohibited-area controls apply. A non-Beijing vehicle may also need the appropriate Beijing-entry permit for its actual driving area, while defined vehicle classes are exempt. Use the Beijing Traffic Police platform for the current rotation, permit type and procedure; if applicability remains unclear, keep the car outside the restricted area and use public transport.

Start-Point and Live-Route Method

• Enter the actual Beijing start point and the official attraction entrance, hotel car park, or pier in live navigation. A central-Beijing estimate is not a substitute for the traveller's route.
• Split the journey into city exit, expressway, the final local or mountain-road section, parking, and walking. Recheck the evening before and again at departure.
• Lock in fuel or charging, tolls, parking, entry or boarding deadline, hotel vehicle access, and a latest return point. If one link is uncertain, remove a stop, stay overnight, or switch to rail and public transport.
• A route that is mostly expressway can still fail at the final mountain, forest, coastal, or parking section. Review closures, fire controls, snow, flooding, tides, and venue operation separately.

2. Gubei Water Town and Simatai Great Wall

Gubei Water Town is a resort complex in Miyun, beside Simatai Great Wall, with accommodation, restaurants, exhibition spaces, and evening activities. Venue opening, shows, boat services, and night programmes vary by date.

Simatai is known for steep terrain and surviving Ming-era features. Stay on the officially open towers and paths.

Route Decision

Navigate from the actual start point to the currently open Gubei or Simatai entrance and parking area. Verify the Simatai exit, final approach, parking reservation, Great Wall entry slot, cable-car or path closing time, and weekend return traffic. Stay overnight if a night programme leaves too little safe driving margin.

Visit

• A water-town visit can fill most of a day.
• Simatai requires good footwear and enough fitness for steep sections, even when a cable car is used.
• Open towers, walking directions, cable-car operation, and night access are controlled on the day.
• Do not enter closed towers or unrestored Great Wall sections.

Stay and Eat

Evaluate on-site hotels, themed inns, and licensed accommodation outside the resort by room location, parking, shuttle access, breakfast, package benefits, noise, and cancellation terms. Confirm whether any quoted package actually includes attraction admission.

For meals, use current menus and posted prices. Review allergens, service charges, cooking, and return timing rather than relying on a static restaurant list.

Sample Timing

• One day: Choose either Gubei Water Town or the confirmed Simatai route. Add a sunset or night programme only after checking the entry slot, cableway or trail closing time, weather and return plan; stay overnight if the driving margin is inadequate.
• Two days: Water town and evening activities on Day 1; Simatai during its confirmed opening window on Day 2.

Do not lock in a sunset or night sequence until the entry slot, cable-car schedule, weather, and return transport are confirmed.

3. Bashang Grassland

The two main choices are Fengning Bashang around Datan and Weichang Bashang around Saihanba. They are separate main routes and should not be treated as same-day alternatives.

Route Choices

Run separate live-navigation plans to a specific Fengning or Weichang hotel or official entrance. Compare the city exit, expressway, national or provincial road, forest-road finish, fuel or charging, fire controls, temporary closures, parking, and return peak. Do not attempt either long route after a full workday.

Activities

• Use only licensed riding operators that provide helmets, clear prices, and safety supervision. Children should not ride alone.
• Join off-road activities only on authorised routes with qualified operators. Never drive across grassland, wetlands, or fenced grazing land.
• Open flames and private campfires may be prohibited, especially during fire-control periods or high winds.
• Forest parks, lakes, wetlands, and grassland viewpoints must remain optional until their current access and road status are confirmed.

Lodging and Food

For guesthouses, resorts, and yurts, check heating, toilets, bedding, fire safety, parking, meals, night temperature, and cancellation terms. A "yurt experience" is not automatically suitable for children, older travellers, or cold weather.

For group meals such as roast lamb, ask for the menu and price before ordering. Review allergens, food storage, thorough cooking, and portion size.

Season and Weather

Summer can bring thunderstorms; autumn brings sharp temperature changes; winter requires snow and ice preparation. Carry layers, sun protection, water, and weather-ready gear. Recheck fire warnings and road closures immediately before departure.

4. Chengde Mountain Resort

Chengde Mountain Resort is a Qing imperial complex in Hebei and part of a UNESCO World Heritage property.

Route Decision

Navigate to the chosen Chengde hotel car park or Mountain Resort entrance from the actual start point. Check live traffic, tolls, city parking, and hotel vehicle access. Compare driving with rail plus local transport when the trip focuses only on central Chengde.

Visit

The complex contains palace, lake, plain, and mountain areas. Boat and shuttle services are separately controlled and may stop because of weather, maintenance, or crowd management.

Nearby temple choices include Puning Temple, Putuo Zongcheng Temple, and Xumi Fushou Temple. Their admission and opening arrangements should be checked separately. Do not assume one ticket covers all sites.

Stay and Eat

Choose central hotels, accommodation near the resort, or licensed guesthouses by parking, walking distance, noise, heating, breakfast, and cancellation rules.

Representative foods include Chengde cold noodles, buckwheat dishes, lotus-leaf chicken, rose pastries, and regional lamb dishes. Check current menus, prices, allergens, and cooking rather than treating any named business as endorsed.

Two-Day Outline

• Day 1: Drive to Chengde and visit the palace and lake areas.
• Day 2: Choose either the mountain area or one or two surrounding temples, then return with a rest stop.

5. Qinhuangdao and Beidaihe

This coastal route can combine beach areas, Shanhaiguan, and selected attractions in Beidaihe or Nandaihe. Avoid trying to cover all of them in one day.

Route Decision

Choose Beidaihe, Shanhaiguan, Nandaihe, or the Aranya area as the principal route before navigating to a specific hotel, open bathing area, or reserved entrance. Check live G1-direction traffic, parking, hotel access, coastal controls, sea conditions, and the return peak. Add a night when the summer return has no recovery margin.

Route Choices

• Beidaihe: Select one beach or park cluster and verify opening, parking, and swimming controls.
• Shanhaiguan: The First Pass Under Heaven, Laolongtou, and Jiaoshan Great Wall are separate stops with separate access and tickets.
• Nandaihe and the Gold Coast: Water recreation and commercial attractions vary seasonally.
• Aranya area: Community access, parking, library or hall reservations, and visitor rules must be confirmed before driving there.

Only enter officially open bathing zones when lifeguards are on duty and the day's sea conditions permit. Never use appearance alone to judge currents, jellyfish risk, or water quality.

Lodging

Choose among licensed hotels, resorts, and family accommodation by parking, beach distance, breakfast, noise, visitor access, and cancellation terms. Summer weekends can tighten both parking and refund policies.

Seafood

Ask the unit price, weight, preparation fee, service charge, and reweighing policy before ordering. Keep the receipt. Choose fresh seafood from hygienic premises and ensure shellfish and fish are properly cooked.

6. Zhangjiakou and Chongli

Chongli is a major winter-sports area, while Zhangjiakou and Zhangbei also support summer drives.

Route Decision

Use the specific ski resort, hotel, Zhangjiakou city address, or Grass Skyline entrance as the destination; these cannot share one distance or drive-time estimate. In winter check snow, ice, wind, expressway controls, parking, and fuel or charging. In summer check the confirmed Grass Skyline entrance, exit, fire controls, and stopping rules.

Winter Skiing

Wanlong, Thaiwoo, Genting, Fulong, Cuiyunshan Galaxy, and Dolomiti are separate resorts. Open runs, lifts, night sessions, lessons, rentals, deposits, insurance, and packages change by date.

• Buy only after confirming the current official product and refund terms.
• Verify instructor qualifications, class size, lesson length, and insurance.
• Wear a helmet and appropriate eye protection.
• Beginners should not enter terrain beyond their ability or follow an old trail map after conditions change.

Summer Drive

Grass Skyline is a long scenic-road outing rather than a quick detour. Establish which entrance and exit are open, fuel and toilets, weather, and one-way or traffic controls. Stop only in designated pull-offs.

Lodging

At ski hotels, city hotels, and guesthouses, compare heating, parking, shuttle times, breakfast, equipment storage, package rights, and cancellation terms. For summer grassland stays, add fire safety and night-temperature checks.

7. Tianjin Day Trip

Tianjin is a common short city break from Beijing, but driving value depends on the actual start point, first car park, city restrictions, and return congestion.

Practical Route

Navigate to the first planned car park, not simply to "Tianjin." Lock in parking duration, walking or metro transfers, and the latest return. Compare the current intercity-rail timetable, fares, and station transfers when city parking or congestion removes the benefit of driving.

Choose two or three clusters rather than every landmark:

• Italian Style Area for a morning walk
• Ancient Culture Street and selected traditional crafts
• The Five Great Avenues for historic architecture
• Haihe waterfront or an authorised river cruise
• Tianjin Eye only with a confirmed reservation and operating notice

Do not combine every listed cluster with a cruise and Tianjin Eye on the same day. Fix one parking point and a latest departure time, or use intercity rail and local public transport when driving adds no practical value.

City parking can be difficult. A park-and-ride plan may be easier than moving the car between central stops. Intercity rail is a practical alternative when driving adds no value.

Food

Representative foods include jianbing guozi, steamed buns, fried rice cakes, mahua, guobacai, fried snacks, and traditional fish dishes. Use current menus and posted prices, check allergens and cooking, and leave enough time for the drive back.

8. Baiyangdian

Baiyangdian in Anxin County is a large wetland area with boat-based attractions and seasonal lotus viewing.

Route Decision

Verify the current official entrance, authorised pier, and car park before navigation. "Baiyangdian" alone may not identify the correct boarding point. Budget separately for parking, ticket collection, waiting, the boat trip, the last return sailing, and road traffic.

Visit

Lotus-viewing areas, cultural sites, islands, and themed attractions have separate operating arrangements. Water levels, weather, boat schedules, and protected-area controls can change the usable route.

Use only authorised piers and vessels. Before boarding, verify the boat type, route, price, life jacket, insurance, and suspension policy.

Stay and Eat

For waterside lodging, check licensing, fire safety, pier transfers, sanitation, and cancellation terms. Anxin hotels may provide simpler road access.

Local choices include salted duck eggs, fish dishes, lotus-leaf rice, and lotus root. Ask about sourcing, allergens, bones, cooking, price, and portion size.

9. Yesanpo

Yesanpo in Laishui County includes several separate scenic areas rather than one single entrance.

Route Decision

Yesanpo has separate scenic areas. Identify which one is currently open, then navigate to that official entrance or accommodation car park. Recheck construction, flood conditions, the final mountain-road section, and night access before linking Bailixia, Juma River activities, or Yugudong.

Visit

• Bailixia: A gorge route; check current opening, trail condition, and ticketing.
• Juma River: Use only authorised rafting or water-recreation operators. Confirm water level, weather, life jackets, insurance, and minimum requirements.
• Yugudong: A cave attraction with its own opening and ticket rules.

Storms, flooding, repairs, or road controls can affect this area. A historical attraction description is not evidence that the road or site is currently open.

Stay and Eat

Evaluate licensed resorts, hotels, and guesthouses by parking, fire safety, sanitation, meals, distance to the selected entrance, and cancellation rules. Confirm food prices and cooking for fish, lamb, and farmhouse dishes.

10. Shidu and Baihua Mountain

Shidu

Shidu is a collection of gorge, river, cave, and recreation sites in Fangshan, not one enclosed attraction.

Choose a specific destination before navigating. Gushanzhai, Donghugang, Legu Yintan, Juma Paradise, and rafting operators sell different activities and packages.

• Read the package inclusions before paying.
• For rafting, verify the authorised section, water level, weather, life jacket, insurance, and cancellation terms.
• Do not swim in uncontrolled water or enter the river during flood warnings.
• Bungee jumps, zip lines, cableways, glass walkways, and similar activities can have strict age, height, weight, pregnancy, and health restrictions.
• Weekend parking and the return drive can be congested; leave time to change clothes, collect belongings, eat, and rest.

Baihua Mountain

Baihua Mountain is a protected mountain area in western Beijing. Entrances and routes are managed separately, and ecological protection, weather, and seasonal controls can limit access.

• Confirm whether the north or south visitor entrance is officially open, then navigate to that legal entrance and car park.
• Check mountain-road condition, weather, ecological controls, parking, ticketing, and the latest safe descent time. Use a lower-altitude alternative during rain, fog, or road warnings.

Do not navigate directly to a mountain name without confirming the legal visitor entrance.

Lodging and Food

For Shidu resorts or guesthouses, check parking, fire safety, food, distance from water, and cancellation terms. Near Baihua Mountain, also check the night drive, heating, road closure policy, and weather cancellation terms.

11. Lingshan Is Closed

Current Status

Official Beijing information states that the Mentougou Lingshan Scenic Area has been closed to the public and all tourism activities suspended since 2019. A Beijing government update dated May 6, 2026 says that staff recruitment, infrastructure repairs and operating rules were still in preparation and that no reopening date had been confirmed. Only a later formal reopening notice from the operator or Beijing or Mentougou authorities changes that status; until then, treat the scenic area as closed.

What This Means for Route Planning

• Do not include Lingshan as an executable driving, hiking, or cableway option.
• Do not follow old guides to the scenic road, seek an unofficial entrance, or enter from the Hebei side.
• The terrain is complex, weather can change quickly, and communications may be weak. Entering a closed area also harms ecological restoration and complicates rescue.
• For a western Beijing mountain trip, choose one currently open alternative already covered in this guide, such as a confirmed Shidu or Baihua Mountain route, and verify that destination separately.
• Reconsider Lingshan only after the operator or Beijing or Mentougou authorities publish a formal reopening notice. Then recheck the open zones, routes, vehicle access, parking, tickets, capacity controls, and emergency rules from scratch.

Lodging and Food

Accommodation advertised as being "near Lingshan" does not provide access to the closed scenic area. If staying in Mentougou for another legal destination, verify the exact location, night-road conditions, parking, heating, food hygiene, and weather cancellation terms.

12. Driving Safety and Practical Checks

Fatigue and Mountain Roads

• Plan rest around driver condition, road rules, and safe stopping places. Stop at a safe location as soon as concentration falls, yawning becomes frequent, or night vision deteriorates; a fixed interval is not a substitute for fatigue judgement.
• Split long grassland and coastal returns between drivers or add an overnight stay.
• Slow before mountain bends and obey lane markings and local horn restrictions.
• In rain, snow, fog, or ice, reduce speed and increase following distance.
• Avoid an unfamiliar mountain-road return after dark.
• Keep enough fuel for diversions and closed service areas.

Expressways

• Holiday and weekend congestion can add hours to Beijing departures and returns.
• Follow current navigation, road authority notices, and police instructions during temporary controls.
• On long descents, control speed with an appropriate gear and do not ride overheated brakes.

Breakdowns and Emergencies

• Move occupants behind the barrier when it is safe, place the warning triangle as required, and call the road operator, insurer, or police.
• In China, 122 is used for traffic police and 120 for medical emergencies. Expressway rescue arrangements vary by location; use posted road information or the local operator rather than relying on one number everywhere.
• Record the scene only when doing so does not expose anyone to traffic.

Environmental Responsibility

• Take rubbish out of natural areas.
• Do not drive over grassland, wetlands, riverbanks, or closed tracks.
• Do not pick plants, feed wildlife, light unauthorised fires, or enter protected and closed areas.

Route Comparison
