Distance, not a shortage of map pins, is the central problem in a Hulunbuir road trip. Hailar, Erguna, Genhe, Shiwei, Heishantou and Manzhouli can form a six- to eight-day loop; Arxan lies well to the south, and Mohe is across the provincial border in Heilongjiang. A sound itinerary leaves something out so that road works, weather, fuel stops and grassland protection do not turn every day into a late arrival.
Season and Route Boundaries
From June to August, Hulunbuir's grassland and forest are generally green and visitor services are at their fullest, but accommodation and rental demand are also high. Rain, mosquitoes and fast-changing afternoon weather add time to the summer drive. September can bring forest colour around Genhe and Mordaga, together with cold nights, early frost and tighter attention to fire controls.
Winter in Hulunbuir is a different journey rather than a summer loop with snow added. Extreme cold changes tyre, fuel, battery, rescue and driving requirements, so an inexperienced winter driver should base in Hailar, Erguna or Manzhouli and make short daylight trips with a properly prepared vehicle. Spring can be windy and brown after snowmelt; road and fire conditions matter more than a calendar label in either shoulder season.
No Hulunbuir landscape grants permission to leave the road. Use public highways, signed scenic routes and areas explicitly opened by an operator; do not cross fences or drive over grassland, wet meadow, riverbank or pasture. If the access rights and current condition of a so-called “cross-country line” are unclear, remove it from the route.
Vehicle, Licence and Rental Checks
Choose the car for the paved route and season, not for a photograph beside the Morigele River. An SUV does not legalise travel across Chen Barag grassland or onto a forest track. At collection in Hailar or Manzhouli, inspect the tyres and spare, brakes, lights, wipers, glass, visible underside damage and fuel or charge level, then photograph the car with rental staff present.
The Hulunbuir rental contract should state insurance liability and excess, roadside assistance, tyre and windscreen cover, mileage, one-way returns, restricted regions and prohibited unpaved roads. If the vehicle fails, contact the rental company and insurer before accepting help that demands a large private transfer.
Every driver needs a licence or temporary driving permit valid in mainland China for the vehicle class. An overseas licence or international driving permit does not by itself establish eligibility. International visitors should verify the current temporary-permit process, translation requirements, age conditions and the rental firm's policy before buying non-refundable Hailar transport.
Keep identity documents, driving credentials, vehicle papers, insurance details and the rental agreement together in the car. A second eligible driver is more valuable on a long Erguna–Manzhouli circuit than a larger vehicle with only one tired driver.
Six Route Nodes
Hailar and the Morigele River
Hailar is the best place to arrive, collect the car, buy supplies and spend the first night learning the vehicle. The Morigele River and the grassland of Chen Barag Banner make a manageable first outing when approached through an official attraction, signed viewpoint or public road. Ignore navigation suggestions that leave the road for an informal track, and keep day one short enough to return to Hailar in daylight.
Erguna, Enhe and Shiwei
Erguna is a dependable town for fuel, food and accommodation. The managed Erguna Wetland visitor area can be added if its current access and timing fit the drive. Enhe and Shiwei bring wooden houses, border-country scenery and smaller guesthouses, but service standards vary and kitchens may close early. Confirm the exact property, parking and evening meal before leaving Erguna.
Around Shiwei and other border settlements, road and photography signs take precedence over a scenic pull-off. Do not photograph checkpoints, military or border-control facilities, bridges or any object marked as restricted. A drone flight near the Hulunbuir border requires a current airspace and local-rule check; absent clear permission, leave the drone packed.
Genhe and the Forest Route
Genhe opens a colder forest branch towards Aoluguya and Mordaga. Adding Mordaga to a northern loop consumes real road time, and access can change under forest-fire controls. Smoking, cooking fires and closed forest roads have no place in a Genhe day.
At an Aoluguya-area animal experience, choose a programme with transparent rules and reasonable animal-welfare standards. Do not chase, restrain or feed reindeer or other animals outside the operator's instructions.
Heishantou
Heishantou is a useful overnight bridge between Erguna-area villages and Manzhouli. Horse riding, sunset trips and grassland activities are widely offered, but the operator should be identifiable and able to explain the route, helmets, guide supervision, insurance and child rules. Finish the Heishantou programme early enough to avoid a long border-road drive after sunset.
Manzhouli and Hulun Lake
Manzhouli provides the strongest western services and a natural rest day for border-themed city sights, restaurants and vehicle checks. Rules around the national gate, port and inspection facilities must be read on site. After a Manzhouli dinner, the driver walks, uses a sober driver or takes a legitimate car service.
Hulun Lake is a separate outing from Manzhouli rather than an unmarked lakeshore detour. Check the currently open public entrance, road and fuel situation before setting out, and keep an ordinary car off wet sand and unmanaged shore.
Arxan or Mohe Extensions
Arxan requires a new southern route and several additional nights. Mohe requires a long cross-province drive into Heilongjiang. Add either only after rebuilding the accommodation, driver rotation, fuel and return plan; adding both to a first six- or seven-day Hulunbuir circuit sacrifices rest for mileage.
Four- to Eight-Day Routes
Four days: link Hailar, the Morigele River direction, Erguna, Heishantou and Manzhouli. Plan one main experience per day. This compressed route works best with departure from Manzhouli; a return drive to Hailar needs its own realistic slot.
Six days: run Hailar–Erguna–Enhe or Shiwei–Heishantou–Manzhouli–Hailar. Choosing either Shiwei or Genhe, rather than both, keeps the driving humane and creates time outside the car.
Eight days: add Genhe and a focused Mordaga forest section, then reserve one day for rain, road delays or a slower stay near Erguna. During prolonged wet weather, cut a forest spur instead of letting every subsequent night slide.
Winter short route: sleep in Hailar, Erguna or Manzhouli and make daylight out-and-back journeys where services and road information are dependable. Do not reproduce the summer village loop or schedule a long Hulunbuir night drive in severe cold.
Reserve the Hailar or Manzhouli nights tied to flights or trains first. In summer, book small-village rooms in Enhe, Shiwei and Heishantou once the loop is stable; “remaining flexible” is not useful if the only acceptable room has gone.
Keeping the Driving Day Under Control
A navigation estimate between Erguna and Heishantou does not include livestock, road works, fog, lunch or photography. Each morning, identify the next dependable fuel or charging stop and reassess supply when the tank reaches half on a remote section. Electric-vehicle drivers need live confirmation of charger operation, low-temperature range and rescue coverage, not just a map icon.
Aim to reach every Hulunbuir overnight town before dark. Grassland and forest roads can hold animals, unlit vehicles and patches of poor visibility after sunset, while mobile reception weakens between settlements. Stop roughly every two hours, change drivers when possible and treat drowsiness as a reason to rest rather than something coffee must defeat.
Download offline maps for the Erguna and Genhe branches, but obey construction barriers, police directions and fire closures over a digital shortcut. Carry water, warm layers, a power bank, warning equipment and a basic first-aid kit. Share the day's route with the next accommodation, and if the car stops, move it out of the traffic lane when safe before calling the rental provider or emergency service.
Accommodation, Food and Activities
Hailar, Erguna, Genhe and Manzhouli have the most dependable town services. Enhe, Shiwei and Heishantou rely more on seasonal guesthouses, camps and ger-style accommodation. Ask about a private bathroom, heating, hot water, insects, parking, breakfast, evening meals, late check-in and cancellation; a property name containing “grassland” or “ger” says nothing about its precise setting or hotel standard.
Hulunbuir meals commonly feature beef, lamb, milk tea, dairy products, Russian-influenced dishes and northeastern cooking. Check portion and price before ordering a whole cut or set menu, and read the label and storage conditions on dried meat, dairy or berry products. Travellers with lactose intolerance, milk-protein allergy or another food restriction should explain it clearly, and the driver must remain alcohol-free.
For riding, off-road vehicles, archery, skiing or snow activities, use an identifiable Hulunbuir operator with appropriate equipment, supervision, insurance and weather rules. A waiver does not make a route across protected grassland acceptable. Do not follow roadside solicitors into an unsigned field.
Booking and Price Checks
In peak season, secure the Hailar collection and return arrangements plus the first and last hotel before the smaller stops. A rental order should show the base cover, optional protection, excess, glass and tyre treatment, mileage, one-way fee, restricted areas and roadside support. Do not wait until a Hailar counter handover to discover that the cheapest package left insurance undefined.
For Shiwei, Enhe or Heishantou, match the guesthouse name to an exact map point and record the bathroom, heating or cooling, parking and meal terms. For riding or off-road activities, establish whether the price is per person, time or route, and list helmet, guide, insurance, transfer, photography and costume charges. Keep platform orders and use the written weather or fire-control cancellation clause rather than transferring to an unknown personal account.
Grassland, Border and Emergency Rules
Hulunbuir fences, pasture and wetlands are working land and protected habitat, not open parking. Do not drive across grass, approach livestock herds, dig plants or use flame in grassland and forest country. Fire-control notices around Genhe, Mordaga and other forest areas can close a route immediately.
Border roads near Shiwei and Manzhouli can impose access, photography and drone restrictions. Follow signs and staff, and never photograph military, inspection or border-control facilities. Current national flight rules and any local temporary control apply even when a drone app appears to show open airspace.
Thunderstorms, hail, smoke and strong wind can make an exposed Hulunbuir road unsafe. Stop in the nearest town or formal service area rather than under an isolated tree. After a collision, injury or missing-person incident, secure people first and contact police, emergency services, the insurer and rental company with the nearest road marker or reliable location; completing the loop is no longer the day's objective.
