Longyan is western Fujian, and it works only when you split it by theme. Yongding Tulou and Hakka villages form one line, Gutian Conference Site and other red-history spaces form a second line, and Changting, Guanzhai Mountain, Peitian Ancient Village, Meihua Mountain, Liangye Mountain and Yongfu Tea Garden form a third. The counties are farther apart than the map suggests, so do not force Yongding, Gutian, Changting, Liancheng and Zhangping into two packed days.
Tulou and Hakka Villages
Yongding Tulou is the main Hakka culture route. Gaobei, Hongkeng, Chuxi and Nanxi have different village layouts, round buildings, square buildings and family spaces. Chengqi Lou, Zhencheng Lou and Jiqing Lou are famous, but the smaller lanes, water systems, ancestral halls and daily life matter just as much. Tulou are heritage buildings and also homes. Follow ticket, guide, vehicle, night-tour and interior access rules; do not enter private rooms, block doorways or photograph residents closely without permission.
Red History and Old Towns
Gutian Conference Site should be paired with the memorial hall and surrounding sites if you want the visit to make sense. Check closure days, guide arrangements, group activity notices and reservation rules. Caixi Township Investigation Site and Changting red-history spaces are also solemn places; keep the tone quiet and avoid staged posing in exhibition halls, oath areas and memorial spaces.
Changting Ancient City is a slower Hakka old-town stop along the Ting River. Walk the streets and riverbank during the day, then stay for evening light if transport allows. Parking, noise, old-town guesthouse fire safety and holiday crowding need checking before booking.
Other county anchors can be useful if you are building a longer route: New Luo District for city transfers, Shanghang for Gutian and Caixi, Wuping for Liangye Mountain, Liancheng for Guanzhai Mountain and Peitian, Zhangping for Yongfu Tea Garden, Longkong Cave for a cave-and-karst option, and the Minxi Revolutionary Base memorial spaces for red-history context. Each should be checked separately for road time, opening day, guide availability and return transport.
Mountains, Tea and Food
Guanzhai Mountain and Shimen Lake are a Danxia-and-water route with steps, boats and weather exposure. Peitian Ancient Village needs time for ancestral halls, academies and clan settlement structure. Meihua Mountain, Liangye Mountain and forest routes require road, rain and return-time checks. Yongfu Tea Garden is strongest in flower and tea seasons, but the landscape depends on weather, traffic and farm access rules.
Food is Hakka and practical: Hetian chicken, Liancheng white duck, beef balls, taro dumplings, bojiban rice sheets, pickled duck feet, Tingzhou tofu, Hakka rice wine and tea snacks. Ask for portions and prices before ordering in mountain or village restaurants. For tea, dried foods, woodwork, stonework or red-history souvenirs, keep origin, label and receipt.
