Longnan is a green mountain-and-river route unlike much of Gansu. Guanegou, Wanxiang Cave, Yangba and Wenxian Tianchi need rain and road checks.
Longnan is best understood as several mountain corridors rather than one compact city break. Wudu, Tanchang, Chengxian, Wenxian, Kangxian and Liangdang are separate bases, and the road between them is part of the trip. Choose one or two route families, protect the return journey, and resist using a map pin count as the measure of a good itinerary.
Who This Trip Suits
Longnan suits travellers who enjoy forests, gorges, caves, cliff inscriptions, small museums and county-town food, and who accept that weather may change the order of a day. It also works for families or older travellers when the route uses one county base at a time and replaces long hikes with a cave, museum or town walk.
It is a poor fit for anyone expecting a fast checklist of every famous sight, a nightlife-led city break, or guaranteed mountain access in heavy rain. Travellers with limited mobility should ask about stairs, scenic transport and the distance between drop-off points and entrances before booking. Do not promise a cave, gorge, lake and distant county on the same day.
Choose One Route Family First
Wudu and Wanxiang Cave
Wudu is the most practical transport and service base for a first visit. Use it for Wanxiang Cave and for arrival or departure through Longnan's main rail and road connections. The cave is an indoor option, but it is not a weather-proof promise: confirm opening notices, entry method, lighting or guided-session arrangements, scenic transport and the walking surface on the day.
Tanchang, Guanegou and Hadapu
Tanchang is the useful base for Guanegou. The gorge and lake scenery need a full weather, road and scenic-transport check, especially after sustained rain. Hadapu adds Red Army history and can be paired with Tanchang when opening hours and the transfer are realistic. Treat the memorial venue as a focused visit, not as a brief photo stop between distant valleys.
Chengxian, Xixia Song and Jifeng Mountain
Chengxian works for travellers interested in the Xixia Song cliff inscription and nearby mountain scenery. These are different experiences: the inscription rewards time for context and viewing conditions, while Jifeng Mountain is the more physical outdoor choice. Pick the emphasis that suits the group rather than compressing both around another county transfer.
Wenxian, Tianchi and Baima Culture
Wenxian Tianchi and Baima villages belong to a remote mountain plan. Road condition, rainfall, daylight and the final return matter more than the number of stops. Community access, performances and visitor arrangements can change; follow current local notices and respect village photography and activity rules. Bikou can be considered only when it fits the same corridor without forcing a late mountain drive.
Kangxian and Yangba
Kangxian and Yangba offer forest, tea-growing landscapes and a slower rural route. Stay locally if Yangba is the main purpose of the trip. Confirm the usable road, scenic entry, walking conditions and evening meal options before leaving a larger town. Do not assume every forest road shown on a map is open to visitors or suitable for an ordinary car.
Liangdang and Regional History
Liangdang Mutiny Memorial Hall and other red-history venues suit a history-led trip through eastern Longnan. Check opening days, identification requirements and guided-visit arrangements. If the venue is the day's priority, give it enough time and avoid attaching a distant mountain attraction merely because both are in Longnan.
Three-Day and Five-Day Plans
Three days: one primary corridor
- Day 1: Arrive in Wudu, settle near the station or the departure road for the next morning, and use the remaining time for a town walk and a simple meal.
- Day 2: Visit Wanxiang Cave, or make a confirmed transfer to Tanchang for Guanegou. Do not attempt both if the road or scenic transport leaves no dependable return margin.
- Day 3: Keep a half-day local activity, then return to the rail station with enough buffer for mountain-road delays. If Tanchang is the base, Hadapu is the more coherent history add-on when timings work.
Five days: two bases, not daily hotel changes
- Days 1-2: Use Wudu for arrival and Wanxiang Cave.
- Days 3-4: Choose one second base: Tanchang for Guanegou and Hadapu, Chengxian for Xixia Song and Jifeng Mountain, Wenxian for Tianchi and Baima culture, or Kangxian for Yangba.
- Day 5: Return toward the departure hub. Keep this day light if the trip ends with a fixed train or flight connection.
A third county is worthwhile only when it lies on the onward route and does not create a fragile same-day connection. Jiuzhaigou, Zhagana, Maijishan or Jianmen Pass are separate regional extensions, not casual Longnan add-ons. Build them as another travel block with their own transport and lodging.
Transport and Return Buffers
Book the longest confirmed rail or road segment first, then choose accommodation. A Longnan address does not mean a short transfer: county seats, gorge entrances, cave entrances and mountain villages may be separated by long roads. Check the Chinese place name, the exact boarding point and the correct scenic entrance before arranging a ride.
For self-driving, inspect current road and weather notices before each mountain day. After rain, allow for reduced visibility, temporary controls, falling-rock or landslide risk and slower traffic. Do not follow an app onto an unverified forest or village road. Refuel before remote sections, keep offline maps, and turn back before daylight or road conditions become marginal.
For buses or hired transfers, confirm the operating company, departure point, return arrangement and cancellation terms. A driver who can drop the group off is not automatically a guaranteed return service. On the final day, plan to reach the departure town well before the train or flight rather than treating the published travel time as a promise.
Where To Stay
- Wudu: best for first arrival, rail connections, services and Wanxiang Cave.
- Tanchang: protects an early Guanegou start and reduces repeated road travel.
- Chengxian: useful for the Xixia Song and Jifeng Mountain corridor.
- Wenxian: the sensible base for Tianchi or Baima-focused travel, provided access is confirmed.
- Kangxian or Yangba: use when forest and rural scenery are the main purpose, not as a quick detour.
Compare location, heating or air conditioning, hot water, parking, breakfast time and cancellation rules. In a village stay, ask whether dinner is available and whether the property can arrange a lawful, confirmed return. Changing hotels every night usually costs more time than it saves.
Food, Shopping and Budget Control
Wudu pepper, walnuts, olive products and local tea can be useful regional souvenirs, while noodles, soups and pepper-flavoured dishes are easier to fit into a travel day than a long banquet. Ask about portion size, spice level and the total price before ordering. At markets and rural restaurants, choose cooked food, clean handling and clearly displayed prices.
Build the budget from four variable blocks: intercounty transport, accommodation, scenic admission or transport, and a weather reserve. Do not rely on an undated total-price estimate. Recheck official or authorized channels for the actual travel dates, and keep written cancellation terms and receipts for rooms, transfers, tickets and guided activities.
Weather, Closures and Safety
Rain changes this itinerary more than almost any other factor. Before a gorge, lake, forest or cliff day, check local weather alerts, road notices and the attraction's current operating announcement. If a route closes, use a county museum, memorial venue, cave only when officially open, or a town food day. Never look for an unofficial entrance, unlicensed boat or closed trail as a substitute.
Wear shoes with grip, carry water and a warm or waterproof layer, and keep medication and identification accessible. Stay away from river channels, unstable slopes and closed viewing areas during warnings. Families should keep children away from unguarded water and cliff edges. Older travellers should prioritise scenic transport and shorter loops rather than committing to a route before seeing the terrain.

- Treating all of Longnan as one city and changing counties every day.
- Booking a remote homestay before confirming the final road and return service.
- Combining Guanegou, Wanxiang Cave and Wenxian Tianchi in one short itinerary.
- Assuming an indoor cave, a forest road or a lake will operate normally after heavy rain.
- Adding Jiuzhaigou or Zhagana without allocating a separate transfer and overnight plan.
- Filling the departure day with a mountain attraction and no delay buffer.
Final Verification Checklist
Within the final planning window, check the relevant county government or culture-and-tourism notices, the attraction's official channel, the transport operator, weather and emergency alerts, and the booking platform actually issuing the ticket. Match Chinese names on maps and tickets, save confirmations offline, and identify one indoor or town-based fallback for each outdoor day.
The best Longnan plan usually contains fewer counties than the first draft. Protecting one landscape day, one cultural day and the return journey produces a more useful trip than collecting distant stops.
