Dingxi is not an urban destination that can be explored by sleeping in Anding District every night. Zheyang Mountain and Guiqing Mountain are in Zhang County, Weihe River Source and Baling Bridge in Weiyuan, Li Family Dragon Palace and Weiyuan Tower in Longxi, hot springs and calligraphy in Tongwei, Langdu Grassland in Min County, and the Majiayao cultural route in Lintao. A workable trip sleeps in one or two counties instead of returning to central Dingxi each day.
Choose the Route by County
For a mountain route, choose either Zheyang Mountain or Guiqing Mountain as the main Zhang County day and sleep there. The Weihe route groups Weihe River Source, Baling Bridge and Weiyuan County. Longxi combines Li Family Dragon Palace, Weiyuan Tower and the old town. Tongwei, Min County and Lintao are independent extensions, not central-city sights that can be added casually in half a day.
Use two days for one route, three for a pair of neighbouring counties, and four before adding Tongwei or Min County. Anding District works well for a rail arrival, a transfer and city museums, but it does not have to remain the base. Sleeping in the county containing the next morning's first stop usually saves more time than an early road journey from Dingxi.
Seasons and Weather Decisions
Spring and autumn suit Longxi, Lintao, Weiyuan town and historic buildings, although mountain mornings remain cold. Summer is useful for Zheyang Mountain, Guiqing Mountain, Weihe River Source and Langdu Grassland, but heavy rain increases flash-water, slippery-path and rockfall risks. Winter favours Tongwei hot springs, calligraphy and indoor venues; current ice activities and road conditions cannot be inferred from a previous year's programme.
Check forecasts for Anding District, the destination county and the mountain itself on the same day. A dry county town does not mean a gorge is safe after rain, and a clear expressway does not prove that a scenic side road is free of ice. Replace a mountain day with Longxi, Lintao or a county museum during heavy rain, lightning, poor visibility, rockfall or road controls, and finish county-road driving before dark.
Zhang County Mountains: Zheyang or Guiqing?
Zheyang Mountain is known for close gorge scenery, rock formations, forest and walking paths. Guiqing Mountain offers more forest, mountain trails and broader landscapes. Both depend on rainfall, walkway maintenance, scenic transfers and mountain roads. A first visit should explore one properly rather than forcing two mountains into one day because they look close on a map.
Before entry, confirm open paths, shuttle or cableway operation, parking, latest descent and refunds. Stay on marked managed routes and do not enter an unprotected cave, gully or cliff edge. Retreat when water noise grows after rain, rockfall notices appear or communications become unreliable. A night in Zhang County leaves room to switch the following day toward Weiyuan or Longxi.
Weiyuan or Longxi for Cultural Interest
Weihe River Source combines water-source culture, forest walking and family learning. Its value comes from following the open route and understanding the source landscape and catchment, not entering the spring, stream or wetland to wash, play or camp. Baling Bridge is an important covered timber bridge in Weiyuan town. The visit is short, but the structure, riverbank and conservation boundaries reward attention.
Li Family Dragon Palace in Longxi focuses on Longxi Li clan culture, while Weiyuan Tower and the old town make an easy walking sequence. Open courtyards, exhibitions, ancestral events and restoration areas can change, so not every space shown online is accessible. With one day, choose Weiyuan for source scenery and timber architecture or Longxi for clan history and county-town heritage.
Is Tongwei, Min County or Lintao Worth Adding?
Tongwei works as a rest day built around a specific hot-spring business and Yuexin International Calligraphy and Painting Village or other local art spaces. Confirm the operator, pools, lockers, towels, children's rules, session and refund. A hot-spring ticket does not necessarily cover every facility. For artwork, document the maker, dimensions, mounting, shipping, invoice and return terms.
Min County suits travellers interested in Langdu Grassland, the county town and the herbal-products trade. It needs a separate night because of the road distance. Do not drive over grassland or wetland, compact the ground or chase livestock. Buy angelica and other herbs only from established businesses with origin, grade, label and receipt, and reject therapeutic promises. Lintao is better for Majiayao culture, museum interpretation and a slow Tao River visit; do not drive off road to seek exposed archaeological sites or Great Wall remains.
Workable Two- to Four-Day Plans
For two Zhang County days, arrive after checking the forecast and visit either Zheyang or Guiqing Mountain, then sleep in the county town. On day two, use the other mountain only if conditions are sound, or switch to Weihe River Source and Baling Bridge in Weiyuan. For two cultural days, use day one in Weiyuan and day two for Li Family Dragon Palace, Weiyuan Tower and Longxi old town, leaving from the station that matches the route.
With three or four days, add a Tongwei rest day or a separate Min County night for Langdu Grassland and the town. Lintao fits especially well when entering from or returning toward Lanzhou. Do not combine a Zhang County mountain, a Tongwei hot spring and Longxi architecture in one day; county roads, parking and meaningful visiting time make that itinerary unhelpful.
Rail, Coaches and Self-Drive Connections
Dingxi North Railway Station and Dingxi Railway Station serve Anding District; they are not close to Zhang County, Weiyuan, Longxi, Tongwei or Min County. Longxi, Min County and other counties have their own rail or road connections, so match the arrival station to the first night's lodging. Entry from Lanzhou, Tianshui or Longnan should also be compared against the selected county rather than automatically routed through central Dingxi.
Without a car, confirm the inter-county coach station, real-name ticket, last return and an established vehicle from the county town to the scenic area. A hired-car order should show the plate, driver credentials, insurance, mileage, parking, waiting, overtime and cancellation. Self-drivers need to consider rain, ice, bends, rockfall, fuel and communications. Avoid night driving and do not treat a village road suggested by navigation as a safe shortcut.
Where to Stay
Anding District supports transfers, business travel and early or late trains. Zhang County supports Zheyang or Guiqing Mountain; Weiyuan supports Weihe River Source, Baling Bridge and the Shouyang Mountain direction; Longxi supports Li Family Dragon Palace, Weiyuan Tower and local food. Tongwei and Min County serve the hot-spring-art route and southern grassland route respectively. Moving the base toward the next first stop removes a great deal of wasted driving.
Check the real location, heating, hot water, parking, breakfast, late reception and cancellation. A mountain county town and a scenic gate are not the same place, and an included transfer needs a defined origin, destination and weather-cancellation procedure. In winter, a hotel name containing hot spring does not prove which bathing package is included. In summer, a homestay photograph does not guarantee that camping, picking or bonfire activities operate daily.
Food and Shopping Checks
Dingxi foods include potato dough, jiangshui noodles, broad potato noodles, Longxi cured pork, chicken noodles, qiaoquan rings and county wheat dishes. Choose clean kitchens with posted prices and thoroughly cooked food, and ask about chilli, portions and allergens. For cured meat, noodles, starch products and pastries, check production information, storage and shelf-life rather than carrying an unlabelled product over a long journey.
Herbs, artwork and hot-spring packages require the clearest records. For herbs, note the product, origin, grade, net weight and seller, and never use tourism shopping as medical treatment. For artwork, keep maker and mounting details. For a hot spring, retain the package, reserved session and refund terms. Treat a medicinal dish as a food choice, not as a promise to treat illness, reduce weight or improve health.
Reservations, Refunds and Safety Limits
Check Zheyang Mountain, Guiqing Mountain and Weihe River Source separately for admission, open paths, shuttles or cableways, weather closure and refunds. Li Family Dragon Palace, museums and art venues have their own bookings; an old event discount does not show today's price. Before paying a Tongwei hot-spring operator, obtain the business location, itemised services, date, rules for children or other restricted users, and cancellation terms.
Remain in open areas on mountains, in gorges, catchments, wetlands and grasslands. Do not cross barriers or use fire on forest or grassland. Read the operator's health and safety guidance before entering a hot spring, and leave immediately and ask for help if dizziness, chest discomfort or other illness develops. Keep scenic, hotel, vehicle and shopping records. When service stops, heavy rain, rockfall, ice or a road closure appears, cancel the final stop and return to the nearest county town.
