Hezhou sits near the Guangxi, Guangdong and Hunan borders and combines Huangyao Ancient Town with the forest, stone and waterfall landscapes around the city, plus hot springs and Hakka and Yao culture. Hezhou's attractions stretch from Babu District to Zhaoping County and other outlying areas. For a two- or three-day route between Huangyao Ancient Town and Gupo Mountain, keep the ancient-town and mountain visits on separate days.
How Hezhou Fits a Trip
Huangyao lies in Zhaoping and rewards an overnight stay for its quieter morning and evening streets. Gupo Mountain, Jade Stone Forest and Shibashui are reached on separate roads from the Hezhou urban area and should be selected, not collected. Fuchuan adds Yao culture and the Xiao-He Ancient Road for travelers with more time. A one-day visitor should not attempt both Huangyao and Gupo Mountain from the railway station. The most reliable first visit uses one day for Huangyao and one for either Gupo Mountain or Jade Stone Forest.
Hezhou suits travellers willing to slow down in an ancient town, accept county transfers, and remove an outdoor stop when weather changes. With knee or ankle limits, young children, or older relatives, retain Huangyao, a verified hot spring, and the city while avoiding consecutive gorge and mountain days. A visitor who needs to collect many attractions or cannot accept a rain cancellation should not copy the landscape route.
When to Go
Spring and autumn are usually comfortable for ancient-town walking and moderate mountain activity. Around Shibashui Scenic Area, spring and summer bring heavier rain; waterfalls and streams may look fuller, but flood, landslide and closure risks also rise. At Shibashui, do not interpret recent rain as a reason to enter a valley. On Gupo Mountain, summer is humid and hot, so reduce midday climbing. Between Huangyao and Hezhou Hot Spring, winter can suit an ancient-town and hot-spring trip, although mountain paths may remain cold and slippery. For Gupo Mountain, Shibashui and Jade Stone Forest, check the same-day status and mountain-road forecast in every season.
What to Prioritize
Huangyao is for stone lanes, old banyans, waterways and a living community, not a race through every minor landmark. Gupo Mountain suits a substantial forest walk. At Shibashui, streams and waterfalls are the focus, making the visit especially sensitive to rain. Jade Stone Forest offers a different karst-like stone landscape. At Jade Stone Forest, exposed sections can be hot in the sun, while wet stone requires careful footing. There is little value in forcing all three natural attractions into one day. A verified visit to Hezhou Hot Spring is a useful lower-energy or bad-weather option, but wellness marketing should not be treated as a medical claim.
A Workable Two-Day Plan
On day one, travel from Hezhou Railway Station or the city to Huangyao, then slow down through the public lanes, bridges and waterside spaces and stay inside or near the town. In Huangyao, remain on well-lit streets with clear foot traffic after dark. On day two, return toward the city and choose Gupo Mountain or Jade Stone Forest according to weather. If the day's destination, access road, or relevant administrative area has a heavy-rain, flash-flood, or geological-hazard warning, cancel the valley and mountain plan in favor of a city rest or a hot spring whose access you have verified. Leave a generous buffer before the return train.
A Three- or Four-Day Plan
Three days can give Huangyao, Gupo Mountain and one choice among Jade Stone Forest, a hot spring or an urban rest. Substitute Shibashui for the stone forest only when the trail is open and both weather and fitness are suitable; do not stack it after Gupo Mountain. With four days, add Fuchuan's old-town or village route and another night locally or in Hezhou. Villages remain residential places, so use public paths and do not enter courtyards or ask residents to pose.
Transport and Transfers
Hezhou Railway Station is the main rail gateway, but Huangyao, Gupo Mountain, Jade Stone Forest and Fuchuan require different onward journeys. Public-transport travelers should confirm the bus departure point, current service and last return before leaving. Drivers need extra time for wet mountain roads, parking and poor night lighting. For a hired car to a distant attraction, agree on the return arrangement and keep the driver's or hotel's contact. Do not calculate a return-train day from an ideal map time when roadworks, holidays or rain can slow the trip.
Where to Stay
Hezhou city is convenient for rail, restaurants and transfers in several directions and is the safest first or final night. Staying inside Huangyao gives early and late access, but stone lanes, luggage handling, soundproofing and parking may be awkward; a property outside the core often suits drivers and older guests. A mountain or hot-spring stay supports a slower trip, provided transport, meals, damp control, pool access and cancellation terms are clear. “Hot-spring hotel” does not mean every pool is included in the room rate.
What to Eat
Huangyao black-bean dishes, Hakka stuffed vegetables, oil tea, tofu and home cooking are useful starting points. Oil-tea recipes vary and may include peanuts, nuts or other allergens, so ask before ordering. Eat wild greens and mushrooms only through a reputable restaurant and never collect them yourself. Confirm portions and pricing before a group meal. For black beans, tea, fruit preserves and other packaged specialties, check the producer, seal, storage instructions and receipt rather than buying an unlabelled product solely for its old-town presentation.
Booking and Verification
Check the admission, opening and transport for Huangyao, Gupo Mountain, Jade Stone Forest and Shibashui individually. Wait for a stable forecast before buying non-refundable mountain activities. For a hot spring, confirm which pools are open, children's rules, lockers, maintenance and cancellation terms. Ask a Huangyao guesthouse where vehicles stop and who handles luggage. Keep screenshots of orders, payments and messages. A verbal multi-attraction package without a clearly named operator is not a dependable transport plan.
Build the budget from transport to Hezhou, transfers to Huangyao or a mountain, rooms, each attraction's admission and internal transport, food, luggage handling, and a rain reserve. Secure refundable first and final nights plus the departure connection first. Add one weather-compatible natural attraction next, then buy a hot spring, village experience, or county charter last. Compare total usable cost rather than the face value of a bundle that cannot meet the return.
Safety and Community Boundaries
During heavy rain, flood warnings, rockfall risk or a scenic-area closure, do not detour through village roads or unmarked paths. Stay inside railings in valleys, never cross moving water and keep away from waterfall edges. Huangyao's stone lanes become slick after rain; carry a light and assist children and older travelers after dark. Ask before photographing residents, shopkeepers or private homes, and follow etiquette in ancestral halls and cultural events. Avoid hot springs when drinking, fasting or feeling unwell, and assess personal health restrictions first.
Evidence Boundary and Common Mistakes

A Huangyao Ancient Town profile published by a Guangxi regional-government agency on 14 September 2024 supports Huangyao's location in Zhaoping County and its ancient-town identity. It does not replace travel-date admission, opening, transfer, or community notices, and it does not make Huangyao, Gupo Mountain, Jade Stone Forest, and Shibashui one operating product.
Common mistakes are treating Hezhou Railway Station, Huangyao, and Gupo Mountain as one compact zone, interpreting stronger post-rain waterfalls as permission to enter a valley, and assuming a “hot-spring hotel” includes every pool. Verify the exact entrance, county transfer, final return, weather response, and inclusions before payment.
