Shuangyashan's travel interest is spread across the urban area and the counties of Jixian, Baoqing, Youyi, and Raohe. Wetlands, state-farm history, forests, and the Ussuri River are not one compact cluster. Decide between a short city-based route and a longer Raohe route before arranging transport.
Destination Fit
Shuangyashan is an eastern Heilongjiang mining city and a gateway to agriculture, wetlands, forests, and the border river. The city and Jixian provide supplies and access toward Anbang River National Wetland Park and the Qixingshan forest area. Baoqing is associated with the protected Qixing River wetland and agricultural landscapes. Youyi County introduces the history of the Beidahuang state-farm region. Raohe County reaches the Ussuri River, Sipai Hezhe Scenic Area, Xiaonanhe Village, and Dadingzishan. The county distances are substantial. Qixing River and Naoli River nature reserves serve conservation first and must not be treated as open countryside for unrestricted driving.
When to Go
Warmer months suit public wetland parks, forests, and the riverfront, but breeding seasons, flood control, fire restrictions, thunderstorms, and insects can alter access. Birdwatching in protected wetlands is limited to observation platforms and public activities identified by the reserve; species and numbers are never guaranteed. Autumn agricultural scenery is attractive, but fields, farm tracks, and production facilities remain working areas. Winter adds snow and a strong mining-city atmosphere alongside severe cold, icy roads, and short daylight. Ussuri River break-up, freeze-up, and water activities follow the year's hydrology and notices.
Choosing the Right Stops
- City surroundings: Use Shuangyashan as the supply base and combine it with a currently open museum, park, or the Qixingshan forest direction. This is the easiest one-day option.
- Public wetland park: Anbang River National Wetland Park is a visitor-oriented site when officially open; confirm its season, events, and boardwalk condition. Qixing River and Naoli River nature reserves should be entered only through explicitly public areas.
- State-farm route: Youyi County's agricultural history and display sites are useful for understanding the black-soil farming region. Do not enter fields, warehouses, or machinery areas without permission.
- Raohe border route: The open Ussuri riverfront, Sipai Hezhe Scenic Area, Xiaonanhe's rural heritage, and Dadingzishan justify a separate two-day route rather than a rushed return from the city.
Practical One-Day Itinerary
Begin in central Shuangyashan with one open city exhibition, park, or nearby forest site. Return to the urban area for lunch, then use the afternoon for Anbang River National Wetland Park or another public site whose opening has been confirmed. Allow realistic road and parking time and return before dark. If Qixing River birdwatching is the priority, first contact the reserve or local tourism authority for a public platform, programme, and legal access route. Without an explicit public arrangement, a nature-reserve name displayed by a navigation app is not a visitor entrance.
Two Days or Longer
For two days, choose the city plus Youyi's state-farm history or the city plus a public wetland site in Baoqing. Raohe deserves at least two days: arrive and walk the open Ussuri riverfront on the first day, then select one or two among Sipai Hezhe Scenic Area, Xiaonanhe, and Dadingzishan according to weather and current operation. Three or four days are more realistic for combining Shuangyashan, Youyi or Baoqing, and Raohe. In winter or heavy rain, set only one main direction each day and do not use an unfamiliar county road after dark simply to complete the list.
Getting There and Moving Around
Shuangyashan Railway Station and regional coach services are the main arrival points. Reaching Baoqing, Youyi, or Raohe normally adds a county-road transfer. Search the exact date for rail, coach, charter, or any tourist train; a festival service is not a permanent timetable. A licensed charter should identify the company, vehicle, insurance, waiting time, and one-way finish charges. Drivers need offline maps, extra fuel or charging margin, a usable spare tyre, and emergency warmth. Review ice, blowing snow, and closure alerts in winter, and heavy rain, road works, and forest fire controls in warmer months.
Where to Stay
Central Shuangyashan is practical for the first and final night, restaurants, and vehicle supplies. Baoqing or Youyi works for its corresponding farm and wetland route, while Raohe town is the real base for the Ussuri River and Hezhe culture. For a village stay, verify legal operation, the precise location, bathroom, hot water, heating or cooling, meals, parking, and cancellation. In winter, ask about actual room temperature and night staffing instead of relying on a heated-bed photograph. In summer, look for screens, insect control, and safe drinking water.
Food Planning
Northeastern home-style dishes, lawfully sourced Raohe fish, black-bee honey, rice, and farm products are the main local references. Before ordering fish, ask about the species, source, weight, cooking method, and price, and choose it fully cooked. A border label does not make raw fish or wildlife of uncertain origin safe or legal. Buy honey as an ordinary food, not as a treatment for disease, and read the producer, packaging, and date information. Portions can be large, so start modestly. In a Hezhe food or craft programme, respect the interpreter and community rules and ask what material a fish-skin craft uses.
Booking and Final Checks
Anbang River National Wetland Park, Qixingshan, Sipai Hezhe Scenic Area, Xiaonanhe, and Raohe's other visitor sites each set their own operation. Qixing River and Naoli River reserves also limit public use for conservation. Review notices from Shuangyashan city, Baoqing County, Raohe County, reserve managers, and tourism authorities for boardwalks, observation platforms, events, fire controls, and roads. A tour or charter agreement should state admission, meals, lodging, and insurance. Do not interpret an old tourist-train article, migration livestream, festival, or river-opening event as an everyday service.
Safety and Local Etiquette
In wetlands, use only open boardwalks and viewing areas. Never enter a core zone, buffer zone, nesting area, mudflat, or unsigned track; do not feed, chase, or use sound to lure wildlife. The Ussuri is an international border river, so obey all boundary signs, do not cross management lines, photograph sensitive facilities, or launch a drone without permission. Keep away from farm machinery, grain stores, and production roads. Follow every forest and grassland fire rule. In winter, shorten the route immediately when a vehicle, temperature, or visibility problem develops; during summer storms or floods, stay away from riverbanks, low wetlands, and closed culverts.
