Xinyang lies in southern Henan at the northern edge of the Dabie Mountains. Its travel identity comes from Nanwan Lake, Jigong Mountain, Xinyang Maojian tea and a relaxed urban base beside the Shihe River. Nanwan Lake, Jigong Mountain and Shihe District are complementary themes, not one compact attraction cluster. Nanwan Lake depends on boat and weather conditions, Jigong Mountain needs a full mountain day, and tea-village activities change with the production season. A two- or three-day Xinyang plan works far better than a Nanwan Lake, Jigong Mountain and tea-country sprint.

Three days is ideal for a first visit: half a day or a day in central Xinyang, one day at Nanwan Lake and one day at Jigong Mountain. With only two days in Xinyang, choose Nanwan Lake or Jigong Mountain and keep the other day for Shihe District and tea culture. Travelers interested in tea but not hiking can combine a reputable tea house, an arranged tea visit and a Shihe River walk. Summer suits the forests and Jigong Mountain, while heavy rain, thunderstorms and mountain fog can close views or change paths. Autumn is comfortable for Nanwan Lake, urban walks and a mountain day. Winter may bring low temperatures, ice or rime on Jigong Mountain, so both scenery and access are weather-dependent. On an unsettled Xinyang day, use the Hubei-Henan-Anhui Revolutionary Memorial Hall, Shihe District teahouses and city restaurants as the backup.
What to prioritize
Choose Nanwan Lake for an unhurried water-and-island day; if boats are suspended, the experience becomes much more land-based. Choose Jigong Mountain for forest walking, historic buildings and the mountain climate rather than for a single viewpoint. Borden Forest Park can complement Jigong Mountain only when its entry and transport fit the same day. At Wenxin Tea Village or another registered Xinyang Maojian site, transparent tasting, production and sales practices matter more than a long shopping stop. Shihe District or another well-connected central area works best for a first trip. Shihe District offers a broader choice of food and simpler onward transport than the mountain or lakeside bases. A Nanwan Lake stay suits visitors who value a quiet waterfront, but distance to the working pier and evening food matters more than a generic “lake view” label. A Jigong Mountain hotel can support early walks and cooler nights. At a Jigong Mountain hotel, ask about dampness, hot water, heating or air-conditioning, luggage handling, parking and the way down. In Jigong Mountain or Shihe District, long-stay products require a real contract, cancellation terms and an accurate room description.
Food and buying tea
Xinyang cooking includes stews, braised dishes, quick stir-fries, noodles and fish. Ask about heat level and portion size before ordering, and choose a Nanwan Lake fish restaurant with clear prices, sourcing and proper cooking. When buying Xinyang Maojian, taste first and start with a small quantity. Read the origin, grade, net weight, production information and invoice instead of relying on spoken labels such as “pre-Qingming” or “handmade.” Tea needs protection from moisture, light and strong odors. For Xinyang Maojian shipped from Shihe District, confirm packaging and after-sales responsibility.
Booking and final checks
For Nanwan Lake, verify opening, boats, island access and weather cancellation. For Jigong Mountain, check transport, paths, accommodation and current activities. Wenxin Tea Village or another Xinyang tea host should confirm whether it accepts individual visitors and whether picking or processing is actually available. Past Xinyang festival posters are not evidence that a Nanwan Lake performance, camp or study program is operating now.
