Haidong is a river-valley region east of Xining, not one compact city break. Ledu concentrates Qutan Temple and the Qinghai Liuwan Painted Pottery Museum; Huzhu combines Tu cultural presentations with the very different mountain conditions of Beishan; Minhe is the base for the Lajia archaeological site; and Xunhua follows the Yellow River and Salar community life. Treat Ledu, Huzhu, Minhe or Xunhua as one day’s subject rather than a checklist stop. Three to five days are realistic if you want to link the Huangshui and Yellow River valleys without turning every day into a road transfer.
Understand the Geography First
- Ping'an and the Hehuang New Area: These are useful for airport, rail and road connections and for exhibitions on Hehuang culture. Despite its name, Xining Caojiapu International Airport is located in Huzhu Tu Autonomous County, Haidong, close to Ping'an District. - Ledu: Qutan Temple and the Qinghai Liuwan Painted Pottery Museum make a coherent day for architecture, murals and archaeology.
- Huzhu: Huzhu Tu Ethnic Homeland Garden and the Beishan mountain area are different trips. Huzhu Tu Ethnic Homeland Garden is a managed cultural attraction, while Huzhu Beishan depends much more on altitude, mountain roads and weather.
- Xunhua: The Yellow River valley, Salar culture and town life are the main themes. Xunhua mosques and community spaces are not automatically open as tourist sites.
- Minhe: Lajia National Archaeological Site Park is an important place for understanding prehistoric settlement on the upper Yellow River. It combines better with a night in Minhe or a valley route than with a rushed detour.
- Hualong: The appeal is the Yellow River landscape, villages and food culture. Visitor services around Hualong and the Yellow River villages can be dispersed, so this branch suits travellers with a car and time.
Seasons, Altitude and Energy
Valley floors and mountain areas such as Huzhu Beishan differ greatly in elevation, temperature and road conditions. Do not schedule a demanding mountain walk on the first day after reaching Qinghai. Spring in the Huangshui Valley is windy with large day-to-night temperature changes. Summer suits outdoor time in Haidong, but intense rain can affect the roads into Huzhu Beishan and the Yellow River valleys. Autumn brings clear light to Ledu and Minhe, together with cold evenings. Winter driving between Ping'an, Ledu and Minhe needs a conservative plan because of ice, short daylight and reduced services.
Across Haidong, carry sun protection and warm layers, drink regularly and leave time for rest. Do not use alcohol or strenuous exercise to test acclimatisation, and do not treat a commercial oxygen package as proof that you are acclimatised. If a persistent headache is accompanied by vomiting, loss of coordination, breathlessness at rest or altered awareness, stop activity and do not ascend farther. Descend as soon as it is safe to do so with assistance, and contact emergency medical services immediately.
Choose the Cultural Theme
Qutan Temple, in Ledu, is a protected heritage complex with historic architecture and murals that remains an active religious space. Before entering Qutan Temple, read the current interpretation and photography notices, and never touch its murals, timberwork, offerings or sculpture.

Huzhu Tu Ethnic Homeland Garden introduces elements of Tu dress, music, dance, brewing and daily culture. A commercial presentation is not a complete portrait of every Tu community, and photography still requires consent.
The Huzhu Beishan area is for forest, gorge and mountain scenery. Before entering Huzhu Beishan, confirm the road, weather, scenic shuttle and walking route. Heavy rain, snow or a Huzhu Beishan fire-prevention restriction is a reason to cancel rather than improvise a side road.
Xunhua's Yellow River and Salar culture combine valley landscapes, food and community history. A mosque may be an active place of worship rather than a visitor attraction; follow on-site guidance on access, dress and photography.
Lajia National Archaeological Site Park, near Guanting in Minhe, deserves quiet attention to its preserved remains and interpretation. Itineraries with Realistic Transfers
One Day in Ledu
Leave from Xining, the airport area or Ping'an. Visit Qutan Temple in the morning, then use the afternoon for the Qinghai Liuwan Painted Pottery Museum or a rest in Ledu. Check the mountain road and the final connection before leaving; do not add Huzhu or Xunhua to the same day.
Two Days in Ping'an and Huzhu
Arrive in Ping'an and use the first day to rest. If a venue with a Hehuang culture exhibition has confirmed opening hours, choose one visit. Stay in Ping'an, Huzhu county town or Xining. On day two, choose either the Tu cultural attraction or Beishan. Huzhu Tu Ethnic Homeland Garden suits most families; the Huzhu Beishan route belongs only in stable weather and road conditions.
Three Days for Minhe and Xunhua
Reach Minhe on day one and give Lajia at least half a day. Before leaving on day two, ask the coach stations or licensed driver in Minhe and Xunhua to confirm the current route from Guanting, the expected journey time and a fallback route. If the road is closed, do not improvise along a construction track or unsealed shortcut beside the Yellow River. Continue to the valley and Salar-culture route only after the transfer is confirmed. Use day three to return toward Ping'an, the airport or Lanzhou. Several remote Xunhua townships do not fit safely into the middle day.
Three to Five Days Across the Hehuang Valleys
Enter through Ping'an or the Caojiabao airport corridor, then assign separate days to Ledu, Minhe and Xunhua. Add Huzhu only when it lies naturally on the departure side of the trip. If rain, snow, rockfall or traffic controls close a county road, return to Ping'an, Ledu or the nearest county town instead of improvising a mountain detour.
Arriving and Moving Between Counties
Despite its name, Xining Caojiapu International Airport is located in Huzhu Tu Autonomous County, Haidong, close to Ping'an District. Railways, expressways and national or provincial roads connect Xining, Ping'an, Ledu and Minhe. Huzhu Beishan, Xunhua townships and sites away from the main corridor may still require a local bus, licensed taxi, chartered vehicle or self-drive.
Check the day's services and connections through China Railway's 12306 platform, the coach station, current local culture and tourism notices, and a live map. For a chartered vehicle, verify the operator, commercial registration, driver, insurance, mileage and cancellation terms. Avoid unfamiliar mountain roads after dark. After rain, stay away from road sections exposed to rockfall, landslides or river erosion.
Where to Stay
Xining, Ping'an and Ledu work for short connections; Huzhu, Minhe and Xunhua county towns are practical bases for slower local trips. Confirm the exact address, elevation, stairs or lift, heating, hot water, parking, breakfast, late-arrival process and cancellation terms. At a mountain guesthouse, ask about road access, mobile signal, backup power and emergency transport.
International visitors booking with a passport should confirm the registration process with the property and retain the reservation. A legitimate property should not ask you to leave your passport with an unknown individual for an extended period.
Food, Etiquette and Shopping
Cooked lamb and beef, noodles, highland-barley foods, local snacks and halal restaurants are common. Respect halal rules and do not bring alcohol or unsuitable outside food into a restaurant or home that prohibits it. Ask about allergens and choose thoroughly cooked dishes. On a long mountain route, carry water and shelf-stable food rather than collecting wild mushrooms or unknown plants.
For Tu embroidery, highland-barley liquor and related products, beef jerky or local craftwork, check the producer, ingredients, date, storage and shipping restrictions. Before a costume activity or photo service, establish the price, duration, whether shopping is compulsory and how the images may be used.
Heritage, Religion and Community Boundaries
A Buddhist temple remains a place of worship, and a mosque may receive visitors only in defined areas or at certain times. Read notices on dress, circulation, prayer times and photography. Do not touch offerings, scriptures, murals or cemetery structures. Before flying a drone near a religious site, protected monument, airport or crowd, verify both airspace and on-site rules.
Ask a person before taking a portrait, do not pressure a child or older resident to repeat a performance, and never present one paid activity as the fixed custom of an entire community.
River, Mountain and Exit Safety
Beside the Yellow River, stay on managed paths and viewpoints. Keep off unmanaged gravel bars, construction tracks and reservoir drawdown zones. In Huzhu Beishan or another upland area, switch to a cultural day in the nearest county town when thunderstorms, snow, rockfall warnings or forest-fire controls appear. In winter and after rain, check the tyres and brakes before departure, allow a longer stopping distance, and leave extra time for the return journey.
Decide in advance how to respond to the main disruptions. For mild fatigue or discomfort, stop ascending and end strenuous activity, then return to the nearest place where you can rest and obtain help. Cancel mountain or river-valley side trips when weather or roads become unsafe. If the warning signs described above, an injury or a transport interruption occurs, contact emergency services or the local authorities immediately, follow professional instructions and end the cross-county journey. Haidong rewards unhurried exploration of Hehuang culture, not an attempt to check off all six counties in one day.
