Hainan Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture is in Qinghai, south of Qinghai Lake; it is not Hainan Island or Hainan Province. The prefecture is not a compact sightseeing circuit: Qinghai Lake's south shore, Guide's Yellow River valley, Longyangxia, and the more remote counties to the south all have different elevations, weather patterns, road demands, and levels of visitor support. A Hainan Prefecture trip should choose one main corridor and protect time for weather, fatigue, and road changes.
1. Decide Whether Hainan Prefecture Fits Your Trip
Most visitors arrive from Xining and build a trip around one or two of these areas:
- Qinghai Lake's south shore suits first-time lake visitors and travelers interested in open water, pasture, and sunrise photography. Erlangjian is a managed visitor area; Jiangxigou and Heimahe are more useful as overnight or onward-travel bases. Along the Qinghai Lake shore, elevation, wind, and limited services shape every visit.
- Guide and Longyangxia combine the Yellow River valley, colorful rock formations, county-town life, and gorge scenery. Guide works well for travelers who prefer a gentler first night before the higher lake shore. Longyangxia requires separate checks for road access, boat operations, and the return journey.
- Xinghai, Tongde, and Guinan are remote extensions, not casual add-ons. Driving days are longer and access to fuel, lodging, and medical care is less predictable than in Guide or Gonghe.
Families, older travelers, first-time highland visitors, and anyone who dislikes long driving days should keep to Guide and a short Qinghai Lake south-shore route. Photography at Qinghai Lake, cycling around the lake, and a visit to Saizong Monastery all need stronger transport support and a real weather fallback. Spending time in Xining does not guarantee that anyone will feel well at the higher lake shore.
2. Choose a Season and Plan for Weather
- Late spring to early summer brings gradual greening and variable bird activity around Qinghai Lake. Wind, sudden cold, snow, and icy roads can still affect the lake area even when Xining is mild.
- Summer brings the broadest range of visitor services around Erlangjian and the heaviest demand in Jiangxigou and Heimahe. Rapeseed bloom, clear Qinghai Lake views, and sunrise color vary from year to year. Strong UV, sharp temperature swings, and afternoon wind or rain deserve more attention than a simple sunny-day forecast.
- Early autumn often brings clear color and fewer visitors around Guide and the lake, but nights turn cold quickly and some Heimahe rooms, restaurants, or activities may reduce operations.
- Winter and early spring require experience with severe cold, snow, ice, and possible traffic controls on the Qinghai Lake and Longyangxia routes. Qinghai Lake ice is not a public recreation surface, and services in small settlements may be unavailable.
Before driving between Guide, Gonghe, Xinghai, or the Qinghai Lake shore, check each county's warnings, live road conditions, attraction or protected-area notices, and the status of that night's lodging. Use Guide or Qiabuqia as a shorter county-town fallback if strong wind, heavy rain, snow, or road icing affects the planned corridor.
3. Choose One Travel Corridor
South shore: the simplest first lake visit
Erlangjian has relatively concentrated visitor management and facilities. Jiangxigou and Heimahe can support an overnight stay, sunrise attempt, or westbound journey, but legal access points, parking, and room standards need to be confirmed. Wetland edges, fenced pasture, and unmarked private tracks are not public approaches to the lake.
Gonghe and Longyangxia: supplies and gorge scenery
Qiabuqia, the county seat of Gonghe, is the practical place to refuel, eat, and rest between the lake and Yellow River routes. A Longyangxia day is separate from a quick lakeside cluster. At Longyangxia, access to the gorge, reservoir, earth-forest formations, or boat activities may change with wind, maintenance, season, and operating conditions. Choose one Longyangxia activity if you also need to reach Guide or Qinghai Lake that day.
Guide: valley scenery and a county-town base
Guide can combine the Ashigong geological landscape, permitted Yellow River walks, and historic buildings. It deserves an overnight stop rather than a rushed same-day detour from the western lake shore. Stay on open paths and managed river viewpoints; clear-looking water can still be cold, deep, and fast.
Xinghai, Tongde, and Guinan: a separate journey
Saizong Monastery and destinations farther south need their own vehicle, lodging, communications, and return plan. Confirm that Saizong Monastery is receiving visitors and ask before taking photographs. At Saizong Monastery, dress modestly, speak quietly, and do not touch ritual objects. Travelers with limited time should save Xinghai, Tongde, and Guinan for another trip instead of turning them into night drives.
4. Use an Itinerary That Can Bend
Two days: a short south-shore trip
Day 1: Leave Xining and decide that morning whether Sun Moon Mountain or the Daotang River area is worth a brief stop. Continue to a permitted south-shore visitor area such as Erlangjian. Stay in Jiangxigou, Heimahe, or return to Gonghe county town. Day 2: Attempt sunrise only if weather, legal access, and everyone's condition are suitable. Eat breakfast, then return toward Xining with no more than one short stop. Skip sunrise and leave early if anyone slept poorly or feels unwell.
Three days: Guide, Longyangxia, and the lake
Day 1: Travel from Xining to Guide. Choose either the geological park area or the county's Yellow River and historic sights as the day's focus. Sleep in Guide. Day 2: Follow a currently open route toward Longyangxia or Gonghe. Select only one main Longyangxia activity and stay in Gonghe county town. Day 3: Visit a managed south-shore lake area, then return to Xining. If a Longyangxia activity is suspended or the road takes longer than expected, use the second day for rest in Gonghe and move the lake visit forward.
Four or five days: two slow bases
Spend one or two nights in Guide and one or two in Gonghe or a confirmed lakeside property. Use the Guide segment for geology and Yellow River heritage. Use the second segment for Erlangjian, a weather-dependent sunrise, or Longyangxia; there is no need to complete all three. Keep at least half a day unassigned.
Do not squeeze Xinghai, Tongde, or Guinan into this loop. A southern extension needs another county-town overnight and a daily check of the next reliable fuel, meal, lodging, and medical stop.
5. Get There and Move Around
Xining is the main air, rail, and vehicle hub for most Hainan Prefecture trips. Coach departure points, frequencies, and through services to Guide, Gonghe, or lakeside settlements can change. For Guide, Gonghe, or Qinghai Lake, confirm the current outbound and return service directly with the bus station or operator before committing to a same-day trip.
Self-driving or a private car with driver gives more control, but a route shown on a map may still be too demanding for a day:
- Check live navigation, weather warnings, roadworks, and temporary controls before leaving Xining, Guide, or Qiabuqia; download offline maps.
- Refuel or recharge in Guide, Qiabuqia, or another established town before entering the Longyangxia or southern-county road sections.
- Avoid unfamiliar roads toward Xinghai, Tongde, and Guinan after dark. Do not continue through floodwater, rockfall, snow, or ice warnings.
- A Hainan Prefecture driver agreement should state the licensed vehicle and driver, daily working hours, driver lodging, fuel, tolls, parking, overtime, cancellations, and who decides and pays for a weather diversion.
- Qinghai Lake cycling requires a sound bicycle, helmet, visible clothing, repair support, and an agreed pickup plan. A standard lake-loop schedule is not a promise that every rider can complete it.
6. Pick the Right Overnight Base
- Guide county town has a useful concentration of meals and everyday services. For a Guide room, confirm parking, hot water, heating or cooling, and breakfast times.
- Qiabuqia in Gonghe is a practical rest and supply stop for Qinghai Lake and Longyangxia. Qiabuqia hotels are generally a more dependable choice than isolated lakeside rooms, but late check-in, heating, and cancellation terms still need confirmation.
- Jiangxigou and Heimahe reduce travel before a sunrise attempt. At either Qinghai Lake base, room finish, soundproofing, hot water, heating, meals, and mobile coverage can be limited. A Jiangxigou or Heimahe “lake-view room” does not imply legal walking access to the shore.
- Longyangxia and southern settlements suit travelers who have already confirmed the next day's route and activity. Do not assume that food, charging, repairs, or app-based transport will be available at night.
Medical capability is limited in lakeside and remote settlements, and transfer to a larger facility can take time. Locate the nearest county town or medical facility before booking. Travelers with underlying heart or lung conditions, pregnancy, or other higher-risk health circumstances should follow professional medical advice before deciding on a high-altitude, remote itinerary.
7. Eat Well on Long Driving Days
Common dishes include boiled mutton traditionally eaten by hand, yak meat, ga mianpian noodle soup, Qinghai-style baked breads, yogurt, tsampa, butter tea, and sweet milk tea. Guide is also known for seasonal pears and honey. If rich meat or dairy is unfamiliar, start with small portions and avoid a very heavy meal before a winding road. Travelers with dairy, nut, or wheat allergies should ask about ingredients and shared utensils.
Guide and Qiabuqia offer the most dependable meal choices. Around Qinghai Lake and on the southern-county roads, restaurant hours can shrink outside the busy season. Carry water, a simple carbohydrate-based meal, and a few energy snacks for an early Heimahe departure, but do not plan to live on snacks all day. Choose thoroughly cooked meat and check that yogurt and other chilled foods are sealed and properly stored. Confirm portion size, unit pricing, and menu prices before ordering, and check ingredients, origin, and packaging when buying honey, jerky, or other food gifts.
Qinghai Lake naked carp is protected. Do not buy, eat, catch, or feed it.
8. Book in the Right Order and Build a Real Budget
Set the route and overnight bases first, arrange the vehicle second, and buy attraction or activity tickets last. A working budget should include:
- travel to Xining and onward coach, car hire, fuel, or driver costs;
- lodging in Guide, Gonghe, the lake area, or Longyangxia;
- admission, shuttle buses, guiding, boats, and optional activities;
- meals, charging or fuel, parking, tolls, and the driver's meals and room;
- contingency money for a weather diversion, early return, or an extra county-town night.
At Erlangjian and Longyangxia, prices, hours, boats, and water activities can change with season, weather, maintenance, and demand. Use the Erlangjian or Longyangxia official channel, an authorized seller, or posted on-site information. Do not pay an unidentified individual in advance for supposed Qinghai Lake access. A private pasture activity is not the same thing as an Erlangjian ticket.
Keep screenshots showing the product name, inclusions, refund rules, and customer-service channel. A room with confirmed heat, hot water, parking, and workable cancellation terms is usually better value than the cheapest nonrefundable option.
9. Manage Altitude, Roads, and Ecological Boundaries
The south shore of Qinghai Lake and many connecting roads are at high elevation, and conditions can change quickly at the lake and on mountain passes. Keep exertion low after arrival, avoid alcohol and sleep deprivation, and do not schedule hard cycling, running, or trekking on the first day. Responses to altitude vary widely; no food, medicine, or oxygen product can guarantee prevention or acclimatization.
Stop ascending and increasing activity if new symptoms appear; rest and tell a companion. If symptoms persist or worsen, or if someone has marked breathing difficulty, confusion, or cannot walk normally, contact local emergency or medical services promptly and follow professional advice about descent or transfer. Portable oxygen is not a substitute for assessment, descent, or medical care. Higher-risk travelers should seek professional medical guidance before the trip.
Road and ecological limits matter just as much:
- On the Qinghai Lake and Longyangxia roads, do not stop on blind bends, hill crests, narrow shoulders, or pasture entrances, and do not drive tired to chase sunrise, sunset, or stars.
- Around Qinghai Lake and the Yellow River, stay off lake ice, wetlands, unmanaged river flats, fenced pasture, core protection zones, and shorelines that are not open to visitors.
- At Qinghai Lake, do not chase or feed wildlife. Drone use may be restricted around Erlangjian, wetlands, and bird habitat, and aircraft should never be flown low over birds.
- At Longyangxia and along the Yellow River, keep away from unprotected drops and unmanaged water access. Use only operating boat services and wear the provided flotation equipment.
- Carry all rubbish back from the Qinghai Lake, Longyangxia, and Saizong Monastery routes; stay off vegetation and never buy products made from protected species.
10. Final Pre-Trip Checklist
- ID, booking screenshots, driver or rental agreement, insurance details, and emergency contacts;
- warm layers, a windproof and waterproof shell, sun hat, sunglasses, sunscreen, and lip protection;
- drinking water, easy-to-digest food, and personal medication used according to medical or pharmacy advice;
- offline maps, power bank, charging cables, and a torch or headlamp;
- same-day weather warnings, live road conditions, attraction notices, protection boundaries, and a second confirmation from the night's lodging;
- fuel or battery range, tires, brakes, spare tire, and roadside-assistance details;
- one cancellable item each day, half a day of slack, and a firm rule against night driving;
- The location of the next county medical facility and dependable supply point;
- rubbish bags and binoculars or a long lens, so wildlife can remain distant;
- one last decision: if weather, roads, or health make the plan unwise, which stop will you drop?
