Access to Haibei attractions, pasture, mountain roads and seasonal flower platforms can change with weather and ecological management. Check attraction notices, meteorological warnings, road conditions and accommodation terms before leaving Xining, and seek medical assessment rather than relying on a travel guide when symptoms develop at altitude.
Understand Haibei First: Four Areas, Not One Easy Short Circuit
Haibei lies north of Qinghai Lake and along the southern slopes of the Qilian Mountains. The main areas are Jinyintan and the Atomic City memorial sites in Haiyan, the northern shore of Qinghai Lake around Gangcha, mountain grassland and Zhuo'er Mountain in Qilian County, and the Menyuan flower fields and Gangshika direction. Haiyan and Gangcha belong to the lake corridor, while Menyuan and Qilian enter the mountain corridor.
Linking all four Haibei counties creates long road days and generally suits a four- to six-day route. With only two or three days from Xining, choose either Haiyan–Gangcha and the northern lake or Menyuan–Qilian. County towns provide lodging, meals and basic supplies, but wind, snow, roadworks and livestock can turn an apparently short Haibei transfer into a slow one.
Choosing a Season
Summer gives the broadest access to Qinghai Lake, grassland and the Qilian Mountains, but also brings more visitors and rain. The Menyuan rapeseed bloom depends on sowing, temperature and precipitation; check the current flowering report and viewing-platform status instead of assigning a date from an older photograph. Autumn is colder around Qilian passes, and early rain or snow may affect mountain roads.
Winter and spring can bring snow scenery and organised activities, but ice, low temperatures and strong wind increase driving risk around Haibei. Ultraviolet exposure and wind are strong beside Qinghai Lake, while Qilian mountain weather can feel much colder than the county town. Sun protection, an insulating layer and a waterproof shell belong in the vehicle even in summer, and neither a sunrise nor a clear view of a snow peak is guaranteed.
Haiyan: Jinyintan and Atomic City
Haiyan is a practical first Haibei stop from Xining. Jinyintan presents an open grassland landscape, while the Atomic City museums and memorials address serious modern history. The two can share a day, but Jinyintan requires attention to weather and pasture boundaries, and the Atomic City venues deserve quiet time for their exhibitions rather than staged photographs.
If departure from Xining is late, an overnight stay in Haiyan is more conservative than continuing to Gangcha after dark. Confirm the Atomic City venue's opening, identification, reservation and interpretation arrangements from its current notice. Do not enter closed pasture, railway remains or restricted land around Haiyan, and fly a drone only where both site and airspace rules allow it.
Gangcha and the Northern Shore of Qinghai Lake
Gangcha is a useful lodging and supply base on the northern shore of Qinghai Lake. This corridor is best approached through authorised viewpoints over lake, grassland, wetland and bird habitat, not by searching for an “empty” shore. Fenced pasture, wetlands, breeding areas and unopened lake edges are not public photography sites.
Around Gangcha, do not chase, feed or surround wildlife, and do not buy or eat Qinghai Lake naked carp, a protected species. Traffic on the lake road may be fast and mixed, so use a formal parking area or a place where stopping is clearly permitted. A bend, crest or narrow shoulder beside Qinghai Lake is unsafe even when the view opens suddenly.
Cyclists considering the northern shore must account for altitude, crosswinds, supply gaps and motor traffic. Lowland touring experience alone does not establish that a full Qinghai Lake circuit is appropriate.
Qilian: Zhuo'er Mountain, Grassland and Monasteries
Qilian County merits one or two nights on the mountain corridor. Zhuo'er Mountain combines alpine grassland and colourful landforms, but cloud and precipitation determine visibility. During snow, high wind or thunderstorms, follow closure and evacuation instructions rather than waiting on an exposed Qilian viewpoint.
At Arou Monastery and other Haibei religious sites, read the rules before entering halls or photographing people and ceremonies. Do not touch ritual objects or offerings. The Qilian Mountains are not unrestricted pasture. What can currently be verified from the National Forestry and Grassland Administration is that the Bayi Glacier Science Museum opened in 2026; that does not establish visitor access to the glacier scenic area or its approach road. Add a glacier route only after the current managing authority publishes the accessible zone, vehicle or visitor conditions and operating period. Until then, do not follow old travelogues, map pins or unofficial routes towards the glacier or another ecologically sensitive site.
Any permitted snow travel, mountain route or ride in the Qilian area can carry substantial risk. Use a qualified operator, ask about weather limits, insurance, equipment and a clear turnaround plan, and remain within a currently managed route.
Menyuan: Flower Fields, County Town and Gangshika
Menyuan combines naturally with Qilian and can also be a separate trip from Xining. Use open platforms and designated roads around the rapeseed fields, and never enter crops or block farm access for a photograph. Outside the bloom, Menyuan remains a Qilian Mountains stop, but it should not be sold as a year-round flower destination.
Gangshika-related travel ranges from ordinary sightseeing to technical high-altitude activity. General visitors should remain within the managed sightseeing area; snowfields, glacier terrain and a summit attempt require professional organisation, suitable equipment and a conservative risk assessment. If Gangshika staff advise retreat, weather deteriorates or anyone develops symptoms, turn back rather than treating the viewpoint as compulsory.
Routes from Two to Six Days
Two-day lake route: travel from Xining to Haiyan, visit Jinyintan and the Atomic City venues, and stay in Haiyan. Continue to Gangcha and an authorised northern-shore viewpoint on day two, then return according to road conditions. Qilian and Menyuan need additional days and should not be added to this lake route.
Three-day mountain route: travel from Xining to Menyuan, continue to Qilian and its open attractions, and return on a confirmed road. Outside the rapeseed season, shorten the Menyuan stop and give the extra time to Qilian County.
Four- to six-day combined route: follow Xining–Haiyan–Gangcha–Qilian–Menyuan–Xining and assign one principal Haibei area to each day. If wind, snow or road controls intervene, remove a remote branch instead of compensating with night driving. Zhangye or the southwestern side of Qinghai Lake requires additional interregional travel time beyond this circuit.
Reaching Haibei and Moving Between Counties
Public transport reaches some Haibei county towns, but an attraction may still require a scheduled local service, an attraction shuttle or a properly licensed car. Rail stops, buses and tourist coaches change, so confirm the service with the relevant operator. For a private vehicle, check the driver's credentials and commercial status where applicable, insurance, tyres, brakes and plateau-road experience; the quote should cover waiting, parking, tolls, driver accommodation and cancellation.
Do not treat a navigation estimate between Haiyan, Gangcha, Qilian and Menyuan as a promise. Download offline maps, refuel or recharge in a county town and identify the next reliable supply point. Avoid unfamiliar Qilian mountain roads after dark in poor weather, and obey controls for roadworks, rockfall, snow or livestock.
Where to Stay
Haiyan suits Jinyintan and the Atomic City memorial sites, Gangcha suits the northern lake, Qilian suits mountain grassland, and Menyuan suits the flower or Gangshika corridor. Set the Haibei route before accepting a non-refundable room; a prepaid booking should never force a vehicle over a deteriorating mountain road. Ask each property about heating, hot water, breakfast, parking or charging, stairs, luggage help and late-arrival terms.
At altitude, a county-town hotel near supplies and medical access may be more suitable than an isolated scenic guesthouse, especially for older travellers, children or people with heart or lung conditions. An “oxygen room” or portable oxygen cylinder does not replace assessment and does not make further ascent in Haibei safe.
Food and Responsible Spending
Haibei meals commonly include lamb or beef, noodles, yoghurt, highland-barley foods and county-style dishes. Follow the house rules in halal and Tibetan restaurants. On arrival at altitude, use smaller, lighter meals and adequate water; alcohol does not provide safe protection from Qilian cold and can complicate judgement and symptoms.
For a horse ride, ethnic-costume photograph, yak photograph or pasture visit, establish the Haibei operator, authorised location, activity length, complete charge, included photographs and insurance before taking part. Check labels, origin and receipts when buying local products, and do not purchase wildlife goods of uncertain origin.
Reservations, Ecology and Safety Limits
Check Haibei scenic areas, memorial halls, monasteries and seasonal platforms separately for reservations, identification, access and cancellation. During grassland fire controls, do not light fires or discard cigarettes; carry out rubbish, stay outside fences and do not drive onto pasture. A drone must comply with the rules of the attraction, protected area and airspace at the same time.
Reduce exertion on the first day after reaching Haibei. Persistent headache, marked breathlessness, chest tightness, confusion, poor coordination or worsening symptoms require stopping further ascent and seeking medical help promptly. Do not use oxygen or painkillers to conceal symptoms while continuing from Haiyan towards higher mountain roads.
A sound Haibei itinerary completes one clear corridor within the limits set by weather, health and ecology. Qinghai Lake wetlands, Qilian pasture, Atomic City memorials and religious sites all have real boundaries that matter more than filling the map.
