Hsinchu County runs from the urban area around THSR in Zhubei through the Neiwan railway, Beipu tea country, Guanxi and Xinpu, then into Jianshi and Wufeng. Plains and rail stops combine easily; Indigenous communities, highland farms and long trails require rooms, roads and meals. A short Hsinchu County trip should choose Hakka-and-rail travel or a mountain route, not force both together.
Shape the trip
For a first visit without a car, use Zhubei or Zhudong as a transport point and select two among the Neiwan Line, Beipu and Xinpu. Families can choose one major theme park, ecology venue or farm around Guanxi or Beipu and pair it with a nearby Hakka town. Smangus, Zhenxibao, Wufeng and the Guanwu direction involve long mountain roads. Add them only after road, room, transfer and meals are confirmed.
Hsinchu County and Hsinchu City are separate administrations. THSR Hsinchu is in Zhubei, while TRA Hsinchu is in Hsinchu City. Read the complete address when booking a room or car. Travellers interested in streets, ancestral halls, tea and food do not need the high mountains; hikers and community visitors should not stack urban sightseeing onto the departure day.
Choose a season and weather fallback
Spring suits Beipu, Emei, Neiwan and lower hill walks, while afternoon mist and rain reduce mountain visibility. Summer is hot on the plain, with thunderstorms affecting farms, roads and streams. Start outside early and keep a Hakka cultural venue or an indoor stop in Zhubei or Zhudong as fallback. Autumn can suit tea country, persimmon work and lower routes, but crop and workshop access must be confirmed. Winter brings a larger mountain temperature range; cold spells, ice or dense fog can affect Jianshi, Wufeng and higher roads.
Zhubei may be sunny while Jianshi or Wufeng is already wet and fogged in. Check the mountain forecast, highway and forestry notices and the host separately. During heavy rain, rockfall or road control, replace the highland day with Beipu, Neiwan, Xinpu or Zhubei rather than following navigation onto an unconfirmed service road.
Pick areas and make trade-offs
The Neiwan Line can connect Zhudong, Hengshan, Neiwan Old Street, Neiwan Theater and the railway landscape, subject to current TRA service and engineering notices. Beipu and Emei offer Beipu Citian Temple, lei cha, Oriental Beauty tea and Emei Lake. At a busy old-street period, do not add a distant mountain drive. Xinpu focuses on ancestral halls, local streets and seasonal persimmon work; Guanxi can support an old-town, ecology or family day.
Jianshi and Wufeng are not one casual scenic loop. Smangus, Zhenxibao, Naluo, Qingquan and Guanwu directions have separate roads, communities and reception. Choose one. Confirm whether independent visitors are received and whether a guide or booking is required, and respect ceremonies and private space. A major park, ecology venue or highland farm usually takes half a day or more and should not be combined with a long drive.
Build an itinerary that works
A one-night Hakka route can enter through THSR Hsinchu or Zhubei, use day one for Beipu and Emei, and stay in Zhubei, Zhudong or Beipu. Day two uses the Neiwan Line or visits Xinpu and Guanxi. Without a car, secure the last service and the station-to-site connection; drop a town when the links do not work.
A two-night family version gives one major venue to each day: Zhubei or Guanxi first, a farm or ecology venue second, and Neiwan or Beipu on the final day. A mountain version supplies in Zhudong or Jianshi, stays at least one night in the high area and keeps a descent day for road and weather. Do not connect the mountain return tightly to THSR or a flight.
Arrive and move around
THSR Hsinchu connects with TRA Liujia, while Zhubei, Zhudong and the Neiwan Line serve different directions. Beipu, Guanxi, Jianshi and Wufeng may still require a bus, shuttle, taxi or car, and intervals and last departures must be checked for the date. Solve the least frequent return before booking an activity.
Drivers entering Jianshi or Wufeng must allow for narrow passing, rockfall, fog, construction, supplies and night fatigue. On roads to Smangus or Jianshi, never stop on a bend. A private driver should state licensed operation, vehicle, insurance, luggage, waiting, overtime and rerouting after closure. Before taking an electric car higher, verify public charging; a guesthouse socket is not automatically a charging point.
Select a useful base
Zhubei suits THSR, business, first or last nights and a broad food choice. Zhudong is practical for the Neiwan Line and mountain supplies. Beipu and Neiwan support early and late street time, with parking, soundproofing, dinner and transit to check. Guanxi works for a family venue or car-based overnight.
Accommodation in Jianshi, Wufeng or a community needs confirmed road, transfer, check-in deadline, dinner, hot water, heating, communication and cancellation. A view does not guarantee easy access. At a farm or park hotel, verify admissions, child beds, animal interaction, wet-weather activities and refunds rather than relying on an old package description.
Eat and shop with context
Hakka noodles, rice cakes, lei cha, dried persimmon, tea and local snacks belong along the route. Markets and community shops can replace a crowded old-street venue. Ask about peanut, sesame, nuts, dried shrimp, alcohol and shared equipment when allergies matter.

Before a tea, lei-cha or picking workshop, confirm materials, duration, child restrictions and cancellation. Reserve and control the budget
Book mountain lodging, transfer and a reservation-only major venue before ordinary old streets and meals. Confirm ticket type, height or age rules, animal interaction, guide language, weather cancellation and refund separately. A mountain-driver quote should include parking, waiting, meals, overtime and road closure.
Separate THSR or TRA, county transfers or car, room, venue, activities, food and shopping, plus a weather reserve. Mountain transport and lodging, a holiday family venue and last-minute rerouting are the main variables. Compare daily commuting from Zhubei with sleeping near the route and do not use old admission or room prices as a ceiling.
Stay safe and travel respectfully
Use open roads and trails only and descend during heavy rain, fog, rockfall or ice. Carry a warm layer, rain protection, shoes with grip, water, a light and offline navigation, and do not add a route after sunset. Follow closure and water guidance at streams and keep children under direct supervision.
Before entering an Atayal, Saisiyat or other Indigenous community, confirm reception and ask before photographing people, homes, ceremonies or creative work. Travellers with limited mobility should verify station lifts, low-floor transport, gradients, toilets and accessible rooms individually; old streets, suspension bridges, farms and mountain venues differ sharply.
Final checklist
Two days before departure, recheck THSR, the TRA Neiwan Line, buses, mountain roads, weather, lodging and activities. Save the last service, transfer point, cancellation, road contact and fallback route; add fuel or charge, communication and descent time for the mountains.
Pack rain and sun protection, a warm layer, shoes with grip, water, regular medication and a power bank. The final test is one main area per day, confirmed mountain reception and return, and a complete Hakka or rail alternative after a highland cancellation.
