Kanas is a mountain journey with several distinct bases, not a single lakeside attraction. The usual chain runs through Altay City or Burqin to a designated entrance such as Jiadengyu, followed by scenic-area transport to Kanas Lake, the Three Bays and village branches. Hemu and Baihaba have their own access, lodging and shuttle arrangements, so the trip works only when the transfers and the return are planned as carefully as the views.
1. Set a Realistic Scope
A first visit needs at least one full sightseeing day for the Kanas Lake area and another for Hemu if both are included. Baihaba belongs in a longer itinerary for travellers who specifically want to visit a border village and are willing to check current access requirements. Moving among Kanas, Hemu and Baihaba on repeated day trips can leave more time in queues than on paths.
With two days, stay in the Kanas Lake area. Three or four days allow Hemu to be added at a reasonable pace; Baihaba becomes practical from about five days only if documents, roads and transport are confirmed. Burqin is a useful road-transfer and supply base, while Altay City has broader air, rail and urban services. Arrival in Altay should lead to a quiet evening or onward overnight stop, not an improvised deep entry into Kanas.
2. Let the Season Change the Plan
Early summer and summer support forest, meadow and lakeside walking, although rain, cold snaps and mountain-road changes remain possible. Kanas autumn colour draws intense demand for rooms and transport, and temperature, rain and wind determine the actual colour progression each year. A date that worked in an old photograph cannot guarantee the same conditions.
Winter requires a completely separate Kanas plan. Road controls, an appropriate vehicle, winter tyres, traction equipment, fuel, heating, shuttle availability and rescue capability all need fresh confirmation. During the winter–spring transition, thawing roads, riverbanks, paths and apparently solid ice can be especially unstable.
Follow current notices from Altay Prefecture, the Kanas scenic area and the transport operator in every season. Heavy snow, high wind, strong rain, poor visibility or a road closure is a reason to reduce movement between villages and protect the booked room and return connection. No Kanas sunrise, Hemu mist or Baihaba stars are worth losing a safe road out.
3. Build the Arrival Chain
Most travellers reach Altay City or Burqin first, continue by road to Jiadengyu or another assigned entrance, complete the required identity check and then board scenic transport. Flights using Kanas Airport must be checked against the actual operating season and timetable; its name does not imply useful daily, year-round service. Airports, railway stations, coach terminals, hotels and Kanas entrances still require road transfers between them.
For a scheduled coach, shared vehicle or charter, record the licensed operator, driver and pickup point. The booking should also settle luggage capacity, waiting time, insurance, night driving, weather rerouting and responsibility for cancellation. An unlicensed car is not an acceptable way onto an icy road or around a Kanas traffic control.
Use the first day for supplies and an easy walk after the long approach. A delayed arrival in Burqin or Altay then costs an optional activity rather than the Jiadengyu entry or a village room.
4. Walk the Kanas Lake Area
The main Kanas corridor includes Kanas Lake, Fairy Bay, Moon Bay, Wolong Bay and the paths that management has opened. Combine the Three Bays according to shuttle stops and the group's walking ability; hiking every section is unnecessary. Dew, frost, fallen leaves and wet boardwalks are common reasons to slow down, especially during early photography.
Guanyu Pavilion normally adds another transfer, a long staircase and more exposure to wind. Make the decision after checking the day's opening status, queue, visibility and energy. In dense cloud, time along Kanas Lake and in the forest is more rewarding than waiting for a panorama that may not appear.
Boat trips, horse rides and seasonal activities are optional. The operator's credentials, life jacket or helmet, weather limits and return arrangements should be clear before payment. At Fairy Bay, Moon Bay and Wolong Bay, step out of the pedestrian flow before raising a camera and never walk backwards into a stair or roadway.
5. Choose Hemu or Baihaba for the Right Reason
Hemu is best understood with an overnight stay. The village, Hemu River valley and birch woodland fill the main day; a viewpoint can be added in the morning or evening if weather and path conditions cooperate. Mist and chimney smoke are not scheduled performances, and photographers should not enter a private yard, direct residents or cross a closure to manufacture an image.
Wooden-house rooms in Hemu vary greatly in distance from the arrival or shuttle point. Ask whether luggage travels with the guest, by a village service or on foot, and obtain the exact location before arrival.
Baihaba lies in a border area, so visitor eligibility, accepted identity documents, the application or check procedure, open approach roads and photography restrictions must be verified through the Kanas scenic area and the responsible authorities for the travel date. A permit method or exemption described in an old blog may no longer apply. Never photograph border markers, inspection, law-enforcement or communications facilities where signs or officials restrict it, and do not cross a fence, warning line, boundary marker or unopened track.
6. Four- and Five-Day Itineraries
For four days, use day one to reach Altay or Burqin, buy supplies and reconfirm the next transfer. On day two, travel to Jiadengyu, enter Kanas and combine one or two of the Three Bays with the lakeshore before sleeping at the confirmed village or scenic-area location. Day three can take in Guanyu Pavilion or a Kanas trail, followed by the confirmed transfer to Hemu that afternoon or the next morning. Spend day four in Hemu before returning to the transport base.
If the Kanas–Hemu transfer time is uncertain, add a night instead of forcing Hemu into a same-day return. A five-day plan can give Kanas and Hemu two nights each, or add Baihaba after all border, road and shuttle conditions are settled. The night before a flight or long-distance train is safest in Altay, Burqin or another place with a dependable connection.
Autumn and winter need at least half a day of slack. Do not connect the last Kanas or Hemu vehicle directly to a flight out of Xinjiang on the same tight timetable.
7. Shuttles, Driving and Winter Roads
Before paying, split the order into five checks:
- admission date and named entrance;
- the trunk shuttle from that entrance;
- branches such as Guanyu Pavilion or a village service;
- transfers among Kanas, Hemu and Baihaba;
- re-entry conditions and the return gate.
A 2011 Xinjiang culture-and-tourism notice documented entrance-specific return shuttles and return by the original route, while a 2018 regional development-and-reform notice described segmented service and prohibited forced bundling. Those old notices show that the products had distinct boundaries; they are not a current fare, timetable or access promise. If the plan enters at Jiadengyu and leaves through another area, obtain current official confirmation of the cross-gate or cross-area movement before paying and save each entitlement separately. Successful admission does not itself authorize a private car, include a branch shuttle or grant re-entry.
Winter driving around Altay requires a suitable vehicle, tyres, traction gear, fuel, warm emergency supplies and reliable communication. Road closures and police controls are absolute, and drivers without substantial snow-and-ice experience should use a licensed winter operator. Navigation software must never be used to justify an unopened forest road.
On any Kanas road, avoid an unfamiliar night drive and stop only where parking is legal and visible. A car left in a traffic lane for a photograph can obstruct snow clearing, a shuttle or emergency access.
8. Lodging, Luggage and Food
Rooms in Kanas, Hemu and Baihaba wooden houses differ in heating, hot water, sound insulation, bathroom arrangements, connectivity and luggage service. A sound reservation records the exact settlement and location, route from the drop-off point, check-in time, child policy, cancellation terms and response if transport is suspended. In winter, ask how the property heats the room and handles a power interruption.
“Inside the scenic area” does not mean beside a Kanas shuttle stop. In a peak period, confirm the room directly rather than assuming a platform map shows the final walking route.
Burqin and Altay are the easiest places to obtain drinking water, regular medicine and simple travel food. Seasonal deliveries limit some Kanas menus, so read posted prices and choose freshly prepared, thoroughly cooked dishes. Travellers concerned about dairy, nuts, wheat or eggs should ask directly about those ingredients, and everyone should avoid heavy alcohol or questionable raw food before a long mountain transfer.
9. Reservations, Documents and Final Checks
Use official Kanas and relevant authority channels to verify the admission date, named visitor details, designated entrance, shuttle rights, re-entry and refund rules. International travellers should confirm whether their passport can be used in the booking channel and what current rules apply to Baihaba. A third-party promise of “no documents needed” is not evidence.
Separate the total budget into long-distance travel to Altay or Burqin, the road transfer into and out of Kanas, each shuttle segment, village lodging and luggage, meals, optional activities and the cost of leaving during severe weather. A move between village rooms also consumes checkout time, luggage transport, waiting and a replacement room if services stop. In autumn or winter, a changeable return and an emergency night are more useful than committing every yuan to inflexible consecutive rooms and the final shuttle.
Check Kanas roads, weather, shuttles, Guanyu Pavilion, boats, village routes and the return again on the previous evening and departure morning. Save identity documents, orders, hotel details and emergency contacts offline. Each group should set a meeting point for a lost-phone or lost-signal situation rather than relying on an instant message.
Where mobile coverage is weak, retain a payment method that does not depend on opening a new online account at the gate. Key transport and lodging details should already be settled before leaving Altay or Burqin.
10. Mountain, Cold and Ecological Safety
Kanas weather calls for adjustable insulation, a windproof and waterproof outer layer and shoes with dependable traction. Persistent shivering, slowing movement, confusion or severe breathlessness requires an immediate stop, shelter and professional help. Children, older visitors and people with chronic illness need a lighter schedule during cold mornings and after dark.
Stay out of unopened forest, wetland interiors, river ice and border-sensitive areas. Kanas wildlife must not be fed or pursued, and plants should remain where they grow. Horse riding, snow activities and boating require a legitimate operator, suitable protective equipment, insurance terms and a credible rescue arrangement.
A drone flight around Kanas must satisfy airspace, scenic-area, protected-area and border rules at the same time. Without explicit permission for the location and date, leave the drone grounded.
