Wuzhen is a Jiangnan water town in Tongxiang under Jiaxing, Zhejiang. The Beijing–Hangzhou Grand Canal runs beside a settlement shaped by canals, stone bridges and waterside houses. Visitors mainly choose between Dongzha (East Scenic Zone) and Xizha (West Scenic Zone): Dongzha concentrates older domestic and cultural displays, while Xizha supports a longer walk, evening lights and an overnight stay.
1. Pre-Trip Checks
Confirm the current Dongzha, Xizha or combined ticket only after deciding how many zones fit the day. Separate notices govern the Muxin Art Museum, rowboats, the Wuzhen Theatre Festival, scenic-area rooms, luggage transfer and car parks. Wet stone, crowded bridges and the final bus or taxi home should remain visible in the plan.
A one-night visit usually gives Xizha enough time to move from daylight to evening and a quiet morning. A late arrival should favour Xizha alone rather than turn Dongzha into a rushed checklist.
2. Wuzhen in Context
Wuzhen grew on the waterways of the Hangzhou–Jiaxing–Huzhou plain and was once divided into Wuzhen and Qingzhen across the town river. Its literary associations include Mao Dun and Muxin; its modern identity also includes the Wuzhen Theatre Festival and the World Internet Conference venue.
Spring and autumn offer comfortable walking conditions. Summer brings lotus scenery, heat, humidity and mosquitoes; winter is quieter but cold beside the water. Rain can suit the town’s appearance, yet Dongzha lanes, Xizha bridges and boat landings become slippery.
3. Dongzha and Xizha Compared
Dongzha suits visitors interested in Mao Dun’s Former Residence, the Hundred Beds Museum, folk customs, woodcarving, Xiuzhen Temple and Huiyuan Pawnshop. Its compact old street can be explored in a few unhurried hours. Individual interiors and the old stage follow their own opening arrangements.
Xizha is larger and more oriented toward a slow holiday. The Caomu Bense Dye Workshop, Xuchang Sauce Garden, Zhaoming Academy, Water Market, White Lotus Pagoda Temple and Muxin Art Museum can lead into dinner and a night walk. Scenic-area lodging makes the early morning practical.
A combined ticket is useful only if both zones fit its entry terms and the group’s walking capacity. Dongzha and Xizha complement each other; neither needs to be “completed” to justify the visit.
4. One-Day and Overnight Routes
For one full day, use Dongzha in the morning and enter Xizha after lunch. Select Mao Dun’s Former Residence and two Dongzha interiors, then see a craft site and one cultural venue in Xizha before dinner. The lit riverfront becomes the evening finish; a rowboat remains optional.
With only an afternoon, give the time to Xizha and preserve the daylight–dusk–night sequence. Travellers staying outside the scenic zone should establish the last transfer before the lights become the focus.
For two days and one night, visit Dongzha first and sleep inside Xizha if the room order includes the needed entry rights. The second morning can cover bridges, the Water Market and Muxin Art Museum before checkout. Hotel confirmation must define re-entry and luggage service.
5. Muxin Art Museum
Muxin Art Museum brings modern concrete architecture into the Xizha waterscape. Its exhibitions draw on the paintings, manuscripts and literary life of Muxin, a Wuzhen-born writer and artist. Chen Danqing has been closely associated with the institution, and architects Hiroshi Okamoto and Lin Bing designed the building.
The museum may observe a closing day or different last-entry time from Xizha. Consult Muxin Art Museum for current exhibitions, photography rules, reservation and ticket relationship. Leave enough time for the galleries rather than arriving at the end of the scenic-zone day.
6. Wuzhen Theatre Festival
Founded in 2013, the Wuzhen Theatre Festival was initiated by Chen Xianghong, Huang Lei, Stan Lai and Meng Jinghui. Its programme may include invited productions, emerging-artist competitions, public carnival performances and town conversations. Wuzhen Grand Theatre, Water Theatre, Bangwan Theatre and Shen Family Theatre create different walking and admission needs.
The annual programme determines dates, venues and ticket rights. A scenic-zone ticket does not automatically include a production, and a festival product may not include every show. Match each performance to its venue and admission time, then retain the named ticket and cancellation terms.
7. Night Views and Rowboats
Xizha’s night character comes from the lit waterside buildings, bridges and reflections along Xizha Street. The Water Market, White Lotus Pagoda end and Tongan Inn area offer different river views. Accessible sections of White Lotus Pagoda Temple depend on the current site notice.
Rowboat fares, passenger limits, routes, boarding points and suspension rules can change. The posted notice should clarify whether the landing differs from the starting point. Children remain seated and follow crew instructions on boarding and life jackets; tripods cannot obstruct a bridge or narrow lane.
8. Staying Inside the Scenic Zone
Managed homestay rooms and hotels inside Xizha may simplify night and morning access. Waterside Resort, Tongan Inn, Water Alley Inn and Wuzhen Homestay represent different room types and locations, but only the exact order defines breakfast, admission, re-entry and luggage transfer.
A “riverside” property does not guarantee that the booked room faces the canal. Confirm floor, stairs or lift, noise, dampness, bed layout, child policy and late check-in. Theatre Festival dates and public holidays make flexible cancellation especially valuable.
9. World Internet Conference Venue
Wuzhen International Internet Exhibition and Convention Center stands near Xizha. Since 2014, Wuzhen has hosted the World Internet Conference's Wuzhen meetings at this permanent venue. Architect Wang Shu used white walls, grey tiles and covered connections to relate the modern complex to Jiangnan forms.
Public access changes around conferences and events. Treat the convention centre as a conditional architecture or exhibition stop, not a guaranteed extension of Xizha. Barriers, registration rules and event transport take priority on conference days.
10. Arrival and Local Movement
Tongxiang Railway Station is the principal rail gateway for many visitors. Bus K282 terminates at Wuzhen Bus Station rather than at a scenic-zone gate; continue by a currently operating local shuttle, bus or taxi, and verify the final stop on the travel day. Direct coaches from Shanghai or Hangzhou vary by terminal and operating period.
Drivers should select the car park tied to the booked hotel or entrance and review holiday controls before arrival. Inside Wuzhen, walking is the essential transport; rowboats provide an experience rather than a required transfer. Stone paving and bridge approaches make light luggage or a confirmed hotel baggage service worthwhile.
11. Wuzhen Food and Crafts
White-water fish, red-braised lamb, sister-in-law cakes, dingsheng rice cakes and smoked-bean tea are common Wuzhen flavours. Sanbai liquor is a strong traditional spirit; other rice drinks may have very different alcohol content. A driver should not take part in a tasting.
For fish, establish the unit, displayed weight, cooking method and service charge before preparation. Aquatic products should be thoroughly cooked. Fish, sesame, peanut, soy and gluten allergies require a direct kitchen conversation.
Indigo-dyed textiles recall the Caomu Bense Dye Workshop, while sauces connect to Xuchang Sauce Garden. Packaged cakes, tea, sauces and cloth should carry clear ingredients, care or storage information rather than relying on scenic-area branding.

A weekday or overnight stay can reduce the pressure of the busiest central lanes. Shoes with grip help on Xizha bridge steps and Dongzha stone paving. Summer visitors can use Muxin Art Museum or another open interior as a cooling break; winter visitors need an extra layer for the waterside evening.
Reserve transport and a cancellable room first, then select the zone ticket. The Muxin Art Museum, a rowboat and any performance follow only after their separate rules fit the route. Official or authorised payment channels protect ticket names and refund terms.
13. Nearby Water-Town Combinations
Nanxun Ancient Town offers another canal settlement and historic residences. Xitang is known for covered lanes and alleys, while Yanguan links an old town with Qiantang River tidal viewing. Puyuan Ancient Town provides a nearer fashion-oriented contrast to Wuzhen.
Each side trip needs its own transport and opening check. A rushed same-day chain of Wuzhen, Nanxun and Xitang loses the slow walking that distinguishes them. Qiantang River tide viewing at Yanguan also requires official timing and a safe designated area.
14. Dongzha Interiors in Detail
The Hundred Beds Museum interprets Jiangnan domestic life through historic furniture, including elaborate canopy-bed craftsmanship. The Folk Customs Museum covers rites and seasonal customs, while the Woodcarving Exhibition Hall uses architectural and household carving to show traditional motifs. Yu Liuliang Coin Museum adds a collecting history distinct from those domestic displays.
Mao Dun’s Former Residence presents the life of Shen Yanbing, known by the pen name Mao Dun. Manuscripts and rooms connect the author to works such as Midnight, Spring Silkworms and The Lin Family Shop. Nearby Wenchang Pavilion and Lizhi Academy extend the literary context.
Xiuzhen Temple and the old stage face one another across the historic street. The temple was traditionally linked in regional accounts with Suzhou Xuanmiao Temple and Puyuan Xiangyun Temple; the stage recalls Kunqu, Yue opera and flower-drum performances. Huiyuan Pawnshop near Yingjia Bridge and Nanhua Bridge explains the high counter, secure store rooms and fire precautions of a Qing-era pawnbroker.
15. Xizha Workshops and Cultural Stops
Caomu Bense Dye Workshop demonstrates indigo-resist textile processes and creates one of Xizha’s familiar courtyard scenes. Xuchang Sauce Garden interprets fermentation through its sauce jars, while Yichang Foundry represents another traditional trade. Production areas and demonstrations follow current access rules.
Zhaoming Academy commemorates Xiao Tong and the literary tradition of the Wen Xuan. The Three-Inch Golden Lotus Museum addresses the history of foot-binding through shoes and related objects; families may decide that the subject is unsuitable for younger children. Yida Silk Mill and Needlework Street continue the textile theme.
White Lotus Pagoda Temple, the Water Market and the long canal street supply the broader townscape between interiors. Any tower access must be verified on site rather than inferred from photographs.
16. A Food Map by Area
Dongzha Old Street is convenient for sister-in-law cakes, dingsheng cakes and other short snack stops. Xizha Street supports sit-down meals such as white-water fish and red-braised lamb. The Water Market is associated with breakfast foods, wontons, shaomai and tea cakes.
Canal-side restaurants may charge for the view as well as the dish. Read the menu before taking a table and verify any minimum spend. Outside the scenic zones, Tongxiang-area restaurants can be easier for parking and price comparison but require a planned return.
17. Festival Logistics in Detail
The Wuzhen Theatre Festival releases its own programme and sales arrangements for invited productions, emerging-artist work, the town carnival and public conversations. Wuzhen Grand Theatre and smaller venues such as Bangwan Theatre or Shen Family Theatre are not interchangeable pins. Walking and admission buffers belong between performances.
Accommodation should be matched to the official festival dates, not an assumed annual week. Unverified resale is a poor answer to a sold-out show. Free public performance areas can still become crowded, so protect bridges, exits and the route back to the room.
18. A Focused Muxin Visit
Inside Muxin Art Museum, the sequence may move between paintings, calligraphy, manuscripts, literary displays, film material and temporary exhibitions. Current gallery use determines the actual route. Readers of Literary Memoirs or Qiongmeika Meditations may recognise additional context, but prior reading is not required.
Photography permission can vary by gallery and exhibition. Flash and intrusive equipment should never be assumed acceptable. The quiet modern building deserves its own visit rather than serving as a shelter between unrelated Xizha stops.
19. Choosing the Exact Room
A room inside Xizha earns its premium only if the included rights support the intended night and morning. Compare Waterside Resort, Tongan Inn, Water Alley Inn and Wuzhen Homestay by exact room position, breakfast, entry, luggage, cancellation and access to the relevant performance venue.
Centralised check-in or baggage transfer may be part of some scenic-area stays, but the reservation must say so. An outside hotel may suit drivers or budget-conscious visitors better. Its last transfer and next-day ticket requirement must be clear before the Xizha night walk begins.
