Beiji Village is a border-forest destination reached through Mohe, which remains the principal transport and supply base. It is not a casual day trip from Harbin. The village centre, public Heilongjiang River viewpoints and Arctic-themed post office suit a slow day. Beihong Village, Longjiang First Bend, Wusuli Shoal and Jiuqu Shibawan lie on separate roads and cannot be combined merely because the distances look short on a map. In Beiji Village, the reliable rewards are the high-latitude settlement, Heilongjiang River scenery, forest, long summer light and winter snow. Near Beiji Village, an aurora requires space weather, darkness and clear local skies to align; no Mohe guesthouse or driver can guarantee it. For a Mohe itinerary, choose season, vehicle and lodging before adding distant viewpoints.
When to Go
Deep winter brings snow and genuine severe-cold conditions, together with short daylight, icy roads, rapid battery drain and longer transfers. Around Beiji Village, shorten outdoor periods according to the day's wind chill and each traveller's condition. Across Mohe and Beiji Village, summer offers forests, river views and very long daylight, while mosquitoes, rain, mud and forest-fire controls become important. “Polar day” is better understood here as extended high-latitude light, not a promise that the sun remains visible for 24 hours. On the Mohe to Beiji Village road, spring thaw and early autumn snow can change access quickly. In Beiji Village, treat aurora watching as an optional bonus in every season. For a Beiji Village night-sky attempt, official space-weather and cloud information can help, but cold, fatigue and the next day's Mohe driving still decide whether to stay outside.
Choosing the Right Stops
Begin a first trip with supplies in Mohe and a full day at Beiji Village; together they cover the settlement, legal public riverbank and far-north theme. Beihong Village suits travellers willing to accept a longer road and fewer meal options. Longjiang First Bend and Wusuli Shoal require suitable viewpoint access, steps and weather. In winter, confirm each site's opening status and traction before leaving Mohe. Jiuqu Shibawan is a wetland meander view whose value changes with water, snow, season and insects. Between Beiji Village and Wusuli Shoal, do not repeat long drives merely to collect “northernmost” labels. Around Mohe, include a birch-forest or wildlife-themed stop only when it is legally open and on the same route. Its return must remain practical. Near the Heilongjiang River, closed forest land, border facilities and unofficial ice are always outside the itinerary.
A Workable One-Day Plan
When already staying in Beiji Village, walk the managed central route in the morning, using the Arctic Post Office, themed markers and open public spaces as short stops. In Beiji Village, return indoors for a hot lunch, body warmth and charging before the afternoon. At an official Heilongjiang River viewpoint, limit the stop and use wind chill and daylight to decide whether more Beiji Village walking is sensible. During a Beiji Village winter, name an indoor recovery point after every outdoor section and never make bare-hand photography or waiting for night-sky colour an obligation. For a same-day return from Mohe, confirm the vehicle, road and current village arrangements before departure. Visit Beiji Village only; do not add Beihong Village or Longjiang First Bend on impulse.
Two or Three Days
A light two-day plan can use arrival day for Mohe supplies and the first night in Mohe or Beiji Village, then give the next day to Beiji Village with a generous road allowance. With three days, place Beihong Village, Longjiang First Bend and Wusuli Shoal on one compliant local route only when weather and roads permit, while retaining another full day for Beiji Village. Jiuqu Shibawan can be a short stop on the way into or out of Mohe if open and truly on the route; it should never squeeze a flight or train. A Beiji Village winter night-sky attempt remains cancellable and should not precede a long Mohe driving day. Summer allows a forest walk only under current fire, insect and trail controls.
Transport and Transfers
Mohe Railway Station and Mohe Airport are the common gateways, followed by ground transport to Beiji Village and the more distant sights. Public services, scenic loops and road arrangements can change, so ask an official channel or operator for the travel date. A charter agreement should state the licensed business, vehicle type, winter tyres and heating, the driver's ice-road experience, route, waiting time, fuel, communication, rescue plan and weather changes. Price alone is not a safety check. Self-drivers need a battery, coolant, tyres, brakes and fuel appropriate to the conditions. Never stop casually on a national or provincial highway, bend or narrow road. On departure day, leave from a stable base rather than connecting a remote village directly to a tight flight or train. Download offline maps before a distant road and share the expected arrival and return with the accommodation or family; loss of signal is not a reason to explore a side road. An electric, rental or photography vehicle needs a cold-weather range and refuelling or charging plan based on real conditions rather than its mild-weather rating.
Where to Stay
Mohe city is strongest for transport, supplies and a weather-related route change. Beiji Village reduces travel to the central attractions and supports a slow day or a brief night-sky attempt. Beihong Village is quieter but requires specific checks for heating, hot water, meals, communication and road access. In winter, look beyond a photograph of a heated brick bed or snowy window. Confirm actual room heating, freeze protection in the bathroom, washing facilities, fire exits, late reception, pickup and cancellation. Groups should verify bed layout and luggage room. If roads close or a flight or train changes, establish the extension, pickup and refund procedure rather than leaving all weather consequences as an unwritten traveller risk.
Food and Meal Planning
Mohe and Beiji Village commonly offer stews, dumplings, sweet-and-sour pork, cold-water fish and blueberry products. Winter logistics and demand can change availability, portions and prices. Before ordering fish, a dish marketed as game or a large shared pot, ask about legal sourcing, portion, preparation and displayed price. Carry water, a thermos and food that will not freeze solid on a long vehicle day. Alcohol does not provide safe cold protection, and the driver must not drink. A late arrival should confirm kitchen closing time instead of assuming food will be made after midnight. For blueberry, fungus and other packaged products, inspect the producer, date, storage and receipt. Avoid a large mail order from an unlicensed roadside seller.
Tickets, Tours and Final Checks
Tickets, internal transport, roads and activities at Beiji Village, Longjiang First Bend and other managed areas follow current notices rather than an old package price. Before payment, match the full attraction name, date, identification, included zone, vehicle or shuttle, cancellation and severe-weather terms. An aurora, charter or photography tour must also state whether the observation point is legal, the waiting time, heated vehicle, latest return and what happens when no aurora appears. Reject every “guaranteed sighting” claim. Check weather, roads, forest-fire controls, border rules and attraction access on the evening before travel and again in the morning. Share the vehicle registration, driver and accommodation contacts within the group.
Cold Safety and Border Etiquette
In severe cold, use a windproof outer layer, insulating mid-layers, hat, face protection, gloves, dry socks and grippy insulated boots. Keep spare batteries close to the body and let camera equipment warm slowly inside a sealed bag to reduce condensation. Persistent shivering, loss of coordination, altered awareness or marked loss of skin sensation means the outdoor activity must end; move to a safe warm place and seek professional help. Use only officially open ice or snow activities and roads, never a river surface simply because footprints are present. At the border, do not cross warning lines, photograph restricted facilities or fly a drone without permission. Follow forest-fire and trail rules, carry rubbish out, and stop rather than press on when the driver is tired, visibility falls or traffic control begins.
