The Great Northwest Loop usually starts in Xining, then links Qinghai Lake, Chaka Salt Lake, Delingha or Dachaidan, Dunhuang, Jiayuguan, Zhangye, Qilian, Menyuan and back to Xining. It is a long, high-altitude, cross-province route with desert, grottoes, salt lakes, passes, grassland and heritage sites. A good trip is built on reservations, road checks, weather margin and health, not on collecting every photo stop.
Planning Priorities
Book Mogao Caves first through official channels, then arrange Dunhuang lodging and the rest of the dates. Check Mingsha Mountain and Crescent Spring, Jiayuguan Pass, Zhangye Danxia, Erlangjian, Chaka Salt Lake, Qilian Mountain roads, Menyuan flower reports and Qinghai Lake visitor activities close to departure. Tickets, timed entry, emergency cave visits, special caves, shuttles and weather closures can change.
For itineraries longer than ten days, Dunhuang's western route or a deeper Qilian Mountain section can be treated as an optional extension. Neither belongs to the basic loop.
Do not start the loop immediately after landing if you are tired. Use Xining for vehicle pickup, water, warm layers, prescribed medicine, offline maps and food supplies. Emergency oxygen may be useful only as part of a wider response; it does not replace stopping the ascent, descending, or seeking medical care. If driving, inspect tyres, the spare, insurance, fuel, windscreen fluid and rescue contacts. On the Great Northwest Loop, two rested drivers are safer than one. Avoid night driving across the Gobi and through Qinghai mountain passes or rural sections.
Altitude health
Headache, unusual breathlessness, chest tightness, confusion, poor coordination or symptoms that worsen at rest are reasons to stop gaining altitude. Do not try to push through them. Shorten the route or descend, and seek urgent medical help for severe or rapidly worsening symptoms. Avoid alcohol while acclimatising, do not take unfamiliar altitude medication without appropriate medical advice, and never let a packed schedule override a health decision.
Eight-Day Rhythm
The eight-day baseline is: Xining rest and supply; Xining to Qinghai Lake via Sun Moon Mountain and Daotang River; Qinghai Lake to Chaka and Delingha or Dachaidan; Delingha or Dachaidan to Dunhuang with weather checks; Dunhuang for Mogao Caves and Mingsha Mountain; Dunhuang to Jiayuguan; Jiayuguan to Zhangye Danxia; then Zhangye, Qilian, Menyuan and back to Xining. A departure from Delingha makes the Dunhuang transfer longer; if it cannot be completed safely in daylight, add a night in Dachaidan and shift the remaining itinerary. The final mountain return is also a demanding driving day, not an easy finish. Split it over an extra day if needed; if weather, road conditions or fatigue render the mountain route unsafe, skip it and take a more direct expressway route back to Xining. A ten-day version can also add a night around Delingha or Dachaidan and another in Dunhuang to reduce fatigue and preserve weather margin.
Boundaries
Do not drive off road into salt lakes, grassland, wetlands, yardang fields or unmarked Gobi tracks. Do not chase wildlife or stop on curves, shoulders, mountain passes or cliff-edge roads for photos. Around Mogao Caves, follow cultural-relic rules: no touching, no flash, no unauthorised photography inside caves. Keep all contracts and receipts for car rental, chartered vehicles, hotels, tickets and paid activities.
Season choice
Summer: fullest landscapes, heaviest demand
Summer brings rich grassland, lake colour, rapeseed flowers and Qilian scenery, but accommodation, vehicles, Mogao Caves and popular attractions need early booking. Keep room to adjust.
Early autumn: clearer views, colder nights
Early autumn usually feels less crowded, with steadier light around Zhangye, Dunhuang and Jiayuguan. Nights on the plateau turn cold and lake shores and Qilian passes can be windy, so bring insulating layers.
Late spring and late autumn: for experienced self-drivers
Crowds are lower, but wind, snow, cold and controls around Qinghai Lake, Qilian passes and Dangjinshan are more variable. This is not a low-pressure route for new drivers or families.
Winter: a specialist itinerary
Winter can suit a focused trip for desert, snow-covered mountains and quieter heritage sites, but road conditions, low temperatures, wind, operating changes and rescue difficulty increase. Without plateau winter-driving experience, do not plan the whole loop as a normal winter holiday.
Route decisions
Xining to Qinghai Lake
Use Xining as the supply and acclimatisation stop rather than driving straight to the lake after arrival. Complete the vehicle pickup and prepare prescribed medicine, drinking water, warm layers and offline maps first. The road passes Sun Moon Mountain, Daotang River and high grassland; a new arrival may develop headache or drowsiness.
Check Erlangjian entry, boat services and the latest admission time in the day's official notices. Stop for lake views only in legal parking areas, and do not drive onto grassland, wetlands, private pastoral tracks or closed shorelines. For sunrise or an evening lake stay, confirm heating, hot water, cancellation terms and a safe return plan before committing.
Qinghai Lake to Chaka Salt Lake
Do not treat an “all clear” road report from one date as the state of the road on your travel day. The Qinghai Department of Transport publishes continuing national, provincial and expressway updates, while 12328 can be used for transport enquiries. Before each departure, check the Qinghai Lake-to-Chaka road, works, controls and weather again. If the webpage and roadside control differ, follow the current control and staff instructions. Shorten the stop, reroute or add an overnight break if the status is unclear or a safe daylight arrival is no longer realistic; never recover lost time by driving at night.
At Chaka, weather, wind, water conditions and crowds shape the experience. Calm sunshine favours reflections; wind or cloud shifts the focus to salt-lake landforms, railway, salt sculptures and lake colour. Check official ticketing, notices and park information rather than low-price listings. Use suitable footwear for hard salt, sun protection and eye protection, and stay out of production areas and beyond barriers.
Chaka to Delingha or Dachaidan
This is Qaidam Basin country: open scenery, but sparse supplies. Delingha is a gentler overnight stop; Dachaidan works as a node for Emerald Lake and the Dunhuang direction. Fill up with fuel, water and food, download maps, rotate drivers and avoid unmanaged dirt roads around salt lakes. In sandstorms, shorten outdoor time and protect camera and phone ports.
Delingha or Dachaidan to Dunhuang
From Dachaidan, a permitted stop at a salt lake or in the Gobi may fit before the drive to Dunhuang. From Delingha, the transfer is longer, so omit those additions; if a safe daylight arrival is not realistic, add a night in Dachaidan and shift the remaining itinerary. The road crosses passes into Gansu and descends markedly. Snow, sand or closures may require linked changes to Dunhuang rooms and Mogao bookings. Prioritise the Mogao Caves; Mingsha Mountain and Crescent Spring, Shazhou Night Market and the western route come after them. Use official reservations only, observe heritage rules inside caves, and do not assume special caves, guiding or emergency visits will be available.
Dunhuang: Mingsha Mountain and Crescent Spring
Plan Mingsha Mountain and Crescent Spring for early morning or evening rather than peak heat. Desert activities depend on weather, wind, insurance, operator credentials and cancellation rules. Follow the scenic area's rules for riding, sand sliding or off-road products, and never enter deep dunes independently.
Dunhuang to Jiayuguan
At Jiayuguan, give priority to the pass, Great Wall history, towers and museum interpretation rather than forcing every outlying stop into one day. Recheck current admission, guided visits, shuttle arrangements, evening access and performances through official notices.
Jiayuguan to Zhangye
Zhangye’s core is Danxia and a city resupply stop. Its colours depend on sun, rain and air clarity. Confirm entry, sightseeing buses, sunset, closing time and weather before buying.
Zhangye to Qilian, Menyuan and Xining
This beautiful mountain-and-grassland return is also a demanding drive. Biandukou, Qilian, Daban Mountain and Menyuan can be affected by weather, works, rockfall, livestock and temporary restrictions. Do not stop on bends, narrow roads or beside farmland during flower season.
Transport choices
Self-drive
Self-driving suits people with long-distance and mountain-road experience. Prioritise tyres, ground clearance, insurance, rescue support and usable luggage space rather than appearance alone. Before each departure, check tyre pressure, fuel, windscreen fluid, navigation and weather. One person driving the entire loop carries excessive fatigue risk; two rested drivers who can alternate are the more reasonable arrangement.
Charter
A charter suits families, older travellers, first-time plateau visitors and anyone avoiding driving pressure. Before contracting, confirm vehicle credentials, driver rest, who pays for the driver's accommodation, weather diversions, insurance and cost boundaries.
Segment-by-segment public transport
Trains, high-speed rail, buses and local day trips can split Xining, Dunhuang, Jiayuguan and Zhangye into separate visits. It reduces driving risk but makes transfers longer and last-minute route changes harder.
Accommodation and food
Use Xining for transport and acclimatisation; Qinghai Lake for lake views; Delingha or Dachaidan for the long-route break; Dunhuang for Mogao Caves and Mingsha Mountain; Zhangye for Danxia and recovery; and Qilian or Menyuan for slower mountain or flower-season travel. Check heating, hot water, parking and cancellation rules where relevant.
Regional choices include mutton, beef, sliced noodles, Qinghai hotpot, Dunhuang donkey-meat yellow noodles, Jiayuguan barbecue and Zhangye snacks. At altitude and on driving days, avoid overindulging. Buy costly roadside specialities only where prices are clearly displayed.
