Leshan is not one attraction. The practical choices are the Leshan Giant Buddha and central-city food, Mount Emei, the Jiayang steam railway and Qianwei, or a separate mountain and gorge route toward Jinkouhe or Heizhugou. The Buddha's cliff path and river boats are sensitive to river level, maintenance and crowds; Mount Emei buses, cableways, construction and high-mountain access can change. Check the relevant official attraction and transport notices for the exact day rather than treating any route as guaranteed.
Choose One Main Line First
With two days, choose either the Giant Buddha plus central Leshan or a focused Mount Emei visit. Link both only when reservations, the mountain transport product and the group's stamina are settled. Families with young children, older travellers, people with knee problems or a fear of heights should consider the Buddha boat view, lower Mount Emei and sightseeing-vehicle areas instead of committing to the steep cliff path or a long mountain walk.
Four or five days are needed for a slower Mount Emei programme plus Qianwei, Jiajiang or a mountain county. Jinkouhe and Heizhugou are weather- and road-dependent excursions, not casual additions after a full day on Mount Emei.
Checks to Complete Before Departure
- Mount Emei: admission, timed entry, high-mountain sightseeing bus, Golden Summit and Wannian cableways, maintenance or construction, weather and temporary controls.
- Leshan Giant Buddha: Nine-Bend Plank Road, foot-level route, river boat, night programme, final admission, river level and conservation rules.
- Jiayang steam railway: current ticket product, departure, return, seasonal train, mining experience and connection to Leshan.
- Mountain counties: road closures, rockfall, heavy rain, forest-fire controls, mobile coverage and the safe return before dark.
- Monkey areas: keep food and plastic bags out of sight, close every zip, do not feed or tease animals, and follow staff instructions.
Leshan Giant Buddha and Lingyun Hill
The Giant Buddha area combines the statue, Lingyun Hill, Lingyun Temple, the cliff path, Mahao Tombs, Wuyou Temple and the confluence of the Min, Qingyi and Dadu rivers. A land visit and a boat view are different products. The land route provides close detail but can involve steep, crowded steps; the boat provides a distant full view but depends on navigation, river level and weather.
For a child, older traveller or anyone with limited mobility, choose one mode after the current access notice is known. Do not assume that an attraction ticket includes the boat or guarantees the cliff path. Within the protected area, do not touch carvings, climb barriers, use disruptive lighting or block the path for a long photograph.
Mount Emei: Golden Summit or the Mid-Mountain Route
Golden Summit and the High Mountain
Golden Summit, Leidongping and Jieyin Hall are at high elevation with rapid temperature and visibility changes. Sunrise, a sea of clouds and the optical phenomenon sometimes called Buddha's light are weather possibilities, not booked products. Confirm the day's sightseeing bus, cableway, timed entry and any construction or crowd controls before leaving the hotel. Carry layers, rain protection, secure footwear, water and necessary medication.
Baoguo Temple, Wannian Temple and Qingyin Pavilion
The lower and middle mountain can combine Baoguo Temple, the Mount Emei museum area, Wannian Temple, Qingyin Pavilion, Yixiantian and, if suitable, the ecological monkey zone. Stairs and wet stone make this a real walking day. Set a turning point before starting, and do not extend the route because the next label on a map looks close.
In the monkey area, do not expose food, shake plastic bags, approach an animal or fight for an item. Follow staff and move away calmly. Temple photography, incense and visitor conduct follow the rules posted at each site.
Central Leshan and Food
Zhanggongqiao, Suji, Shangzhongshun, Dongdajie and the riverside can fill the time before or after the Buddha. Use them as food areas, not as a race between named restaurants. Posted prices, cooking, allergens, queue rules and a safe return matter more than a viral shop.
Common choices include bobo chicken, qiaojiao beef, sweet-skin duck, tofu pudding, fried skewers, kabing, ice jelly, Xiba tofu and local eel dishes. Ask whether skewers, stock, sauces and tableware carry separate charges, and retain the order and payment record. Packaged duck and other perishable foods need a production date, storage method and workable journey home.
Jiayang, Qianwei, Jinkouhe and Other Extensions
The Jiayang steam railway suits families, railway enthusiasts and travellers interested in industrial heritage. Seasonal flower trains, ordinary services, the mining experience and Bajiaogou arrangements are not interchangeable, so lock the return before adding another Leshan stop.
Jiajiang Thousand-Buddha Cliffs, Dongfeng Weir, Jinkouhe Grand Canyon, Dawa Mountain and Heizhugou belong to separate county routes. Enter only managed and open areas. Strong rain, fog, rockfall or forest controls are reasons to abandon the county day and remain in Leshan, not reasons to drive later into the night.
Two- to Five-Day Plans
Two Days: Buddha or Mountain as the Priority
Day 1: Visit the Giant Buddha by land or boat, then use central Leshan for a measured food route. Stay in Leshan or move to the Mount Emei base only if the transfer and luggage are straightforward.
Day 2: Choose the Golden Summit route or a lower/mid-mountain temple route. Do not try to add both the summit and a long monkey-area walk before a train home.
Three Days: A Balanced First Trip
Use day one for the Giant Buddha and city food, day two for one Mount Emei route, and day three for Jiayang, Suji, Xiba, Jiajiang or a quiet return. Keep the third-day option removable if weather disrupted the mountain day.
Four or Five Days: A Slow Regional Trip
Use the first three days for Leshan and Mount Emei. On day four, choose one of Jiayang, Jiajiang or Suji. Add Jinkouhe or Heizhugou on day five only with a legal vehicle arrangement, checked road and weather conditions, and a return before dark. Bad weather turns day five into a city buffer.
Getting There and Choosing a Base
Leshan Railway Station, Emeishan Railway Station and Emei Railway Station are different places. Verify the exact railway booking in 12306 and the final connection to the hotel or attraction. Holiday traffic controls can change bus, taxi and vehicle access around the Buddha and Mount Emei.
- Central Leshan: best for the Buddha, food and a late arrival or early rail departure.
- Baoguo Temple or lower Mount Emei: best for a flexible mountain start and easier food or transport.
- Leidongping or the high mountain: useful only when the room, high-mountain transport and weather plan are confirmed.
- Qianwei: useful for an early Jiayang product, not as a base for daily Mount Emei trips.
A high-mountain room is not simply a more expensive version of a city room. Cost the second check-in, luggage, heating, cancellation exposure, cableway or bus operation and the possibility that weather removes the view.
Budget and Booking Order
Book the return journey and flexible accommodation first. Then use the official product page for the Giant Buddha, Mount Emei admission, sightseeing bus, cableway or boat needed for that date. Separate the budget into long-distance transport, rooms, city or county transfers, admission and mountain transport, meals, luggage and a weather/cancellation reserve.
Do not copy a fixed ticket, timetable or opening hour from an old guide. A quoted attraction admission may not include the bus, cableway, boat, performance or timed-entry right that determines the day. Preserve the order, cancellation conditions and receipt for every paid component.
Weather, Safety and Fallbacks
Rain and fog make the mountain colder and slippery; ice can change high-mountain access. Flood season and river management can affect the Buddha boat and cliff route. If a cableway, boat or county road is suspended, choose a lower-mountain temple area, central Leshan museum or food route and protect the return.
Do not feed monkeys, enter a closed gorge, climb a heritage barrier or use an unlicensed car because a regular connection was missed. Alcohol and a late mountain transfer are a poor combination. Any breathing difficulty, chest pain, severe dizziness or fall ends the sightseeing plan and calls for appropriate medical help.

- Compressing the Giant Buddha, Golden Summit and monkey area into one day.
- Assuming an admission ticket settles the sightseeing bus, cableway and timed-entry product.
- Choosing both the land and boat Buddha views without time for queues or suspension.

Leshan rewards a route that can shrink. Choose one main line, keep the paid components traceable and let river, mountain and road conditions remove a stop before they threaten the return.
