Liangshan is a large autonomous prefecture in Sichuan, and Xichang is only its most convenient gateway. Qionghai Lake, Lushan Mountain and Jianchang Ancient City suit a slower urban stay. Luojishan, Huili, Yihai in Mianning and the Sichuan side of Lugu Lake lie in different directions. A successful route accepts mountain-road distance and changing weather instead of trying to collect every name on one map.

Destination Fit

For a first visit, stay in Xichang and use two days for Qionghai, Lushan, Jianchang Ancient City and city food. Add only one wider prefecture route afterward. Luojishan is a full mountain day. Huili Ancient City is a separate history and food stop near the Sichuan-Yunnan corridor. Yihai combines a natural setting with important revolutionary history. The Sichuan side of Lugu Lake lies in Yanyuan County and requires a multi-day lake trip; it is not a half-day excursion from Xichang. The Torch Festival and other public celebrations belong to announced dates and should enter the itinerary only after the current programme is confirmed.

When to Go

Xichang can support urban and lakeside travel throughout the year, but elevation varies widely across Liangshan. Temperature, wind and rain may differ sharply between counties on the same day. Spring suits Jianchang Ancient City and Qionghai Lake. Mountain mornings remain cooler. Summer is a major travel season and also a period of heavier rain, falling-rock risk and possible road disruption. Autumn is useful for mountain, lake and heritage routes. The temperature difference between morning and evening becomes larger. Winter can bring bright days in Xichang, while high mountains, shaded roads and lake nights require warm clothing. Check the day's weather and operation notices for Luojishan, Lugu Lake boats and mountain roads.

Choosing the Right Stops

Qionghai and Lushan form Xichang's core route. Select one managed lakeside, wetland, birdwatching or cycling section and follow habitat-protection boundaries, then decide whether the group still has energy for Lushan. Jianchang Ancient City works well from late afternoon into the evening and pairs naturally with city dining. Luojishan requires a full day to account for the cableway, trails, weather and elevation change. Huili deserves an overnight stay rather than a same-day race after Luojishan. Yihai's memorial and natural spaces call for quiet time. Plan at least two nights for the Sichuan side of Lugu Lake, and follow ecological and community rules for boat trips, villages and the shoreline.

Practical Two-Day Xichang Itinerary

On day one, choose one established Qionghai lakeside or wetland route in the morning and stay outside closed conservation zones. Rest in the afternoon, then explore Jianchang Ancient City and eat in Xichang. On day two, walk Lushan if weather and stamina allow, or use another managed part of Qionghai. Continue to an open cultural venue such as the Liangshan Yi Slave Society Museum, after checking its current entry arrangements. Families do not need to combine a long cycle ride with a mountain climb. If an evening train or flight is fixed, keep the afternoon in the urban area rather than returning from the far side of the lake at the last minute.

Three Days or Longer

A three-day trip can add one complete Luojishan day to the two Xichang days. Sleep in Xichang or choose a verified base toward Puge according to the transfer. A Huili extension needs roughly two more days for arrival, old-city time and a return buffer. Yihai can anchor a northbound history route after transport is planned. The Sichuan side of Lugu Lake involves a long transfer from Xichang or another hub. Allow at least two nights and include flexibility for wind or road changes. Huili, Yihai and Lugu Lake should not all be forced into a four- or five-day schedule.

Getting There and Moving Around

Xichang West Railway Station and Xichang Qingshan Airport are common arrival points. Their directions differ from Qionghai, the old city and hotel areas, so choose accommodation after checking the actual service. Cross-county journeys use mountain roads. Navigation estimates cannot replace road conditions, rest stops and weather buffers. For Luojishan, Huili, Mianning or Yanyuan, confirm coach, scenic shuttle, authorised charter or self-drive return conditions. A charter should provide operating credentials, vehicle type, insurance, driver-rest arrangements, waiting time and cancellation terms. Avoid night mountain driving in the rainy season and keep the final travel day free of a remote county excursion.

Where to Stay

Central Xichang is practical for rail, airport transfers, dining and Jianchang Ancient City. Qionghai-side lodging suits a slower stay and early lakeside time, but confirm access to a legal public area, evening food and transport. For Luojishan, choose between Xichang and a verified Puge-area base according to departure time rather than a vague claim of being near the mountain. Huili Ancient City, Mianning town and the Sichuan side of Lugu Lake each need their own route base. At mountain and lake properties, confirm hot water, heating or cooling, parking, power-outage arrangements, night transfers and weather-related cancellation.

Food and Local Experiences

Xichang rice noodles, brazier barbecue, tuotuorou meat, buckwheat foods, dairy products and Huili dishes can be matched to the route. Check source and thorough cooking for barbecue, meat, fish, shellfish and mushrooms, and ask about portion and price before ordering. Alcohol does not mix with driving, lakeside activity or a day involving large elevation changes. Before joining a Yi meal, craft, music, dance or festival experience, confirm that it is open to visitors and ask about photography, seating, toasting and fees. Ethnic community life should not be treated as one standardised performance.

Tickets, Reservations and Final Checks

Qionghai wetland zoning, Lushan access, museum reservations, Luojishan's cableway and trails, and Lugu Lake boat services can change because of maintenance, weather, ecological protection or crowd management. Use the scenic area or responsible authority's current notice. Torch Festival dates, venues, transport and security arrangements are announced separately each year; do not lock non-refundable bookings based on a previous year. Treat Huili's public streets and individual venues as separate access questions. Use verifiable operators for vehicles, boats, guides and lodging and retain the price, inclusions, insurance and cancellation record.

Safety and Cultural Respect

Elevation changes and mountain roads increase fatigue. Anyone who feels significantly unwell after reaching a higher area should reduce activity and return to a place where help is available. Cancel mountain or boat plans after heavy-rain, falling-rock, road-control, dense-fog or strong-wind warnings. At Qionghai and Lugu Lake, respect wetland and water controls, stay out of closed shorelines and refuse unlicensed boats. Keep quiet at Yihai and other memorial spaces. Ask before photographing residents, ceremonies or homes in Yi, Mosuo and other communities. Solve delays by dropping a stop, never through exhausted driving.
