Dongji is not a single island that works like a city break. The inhabited group includes Miaozihu Island, Dongfushan Island and Qingbang Island. All three belong to Dongji Town in Putuo District, Zhoushan, off Zhejiang's East China Sea coast. Across Dongji, ferry operations and sea conditions shape the entire trip. For Dongji, the first decision is which island, overnight stay and return sailing matter most, not how many sights fit on a list. For Dongji ferries, recheck fares, sales windows and timetables with the passenger operator or its official or authorized sales channel.
1. Decide Whether Dongji Suits Your Trip
For a first visit with only two nights, use Miaozihu as the transport and supply hub and choose either Dongfushan or Qingbang. With three or more nights on Dongji, both outer islands become possible, although one must remain expendable if ferries change. For families and travelers carrying luggage, Miaozihu has the broadest range of basic services and requires fewer transfers. For coastal walkers, Dongfushan offers the stronger route, but its slopes, steps and wind increase the physical demand. Among the three usual Dongji bases, Qingbang is smaller and quieter. Meal and lodging options on Qingbang are more limited.
On Dongji, do not make the last sailing your only way out or change islands solely for a promised sunrise. If the mainland return connects to a flight, train or nonrefundable hotel, spend the final night on Zhoushan's main islands. Before booking a Dongji overnight, travelers who need step-free access, specialist medical care or a stable work connection should assess the sailing, terrain and limited services.
2. Seasons, Sea Conditions and the Go-or-No-Go Decision
Wind, swell, fog and thunderstorms can disrupt Dongji ferries at any time. Around Zhoushan, summer and autumn require close attention to typhoons and their wider circulation. In Zhoushan, a sunny land forecast does not guarantee a calm Dongji crossing. Before departure, check the Zhoushan coastal forecast, marine wind or typhoon warnings, the passenger operator's notices and any island-ferry update received by your accommodation. For a Dongji plan, any problem in that forecast-and-notice chain is a reason to shorten or cancel the route.
Around Dongji, spring and early summer can bring fog, persistent rain and slippery steps. On Dongji, high summer adds strong sun, heat and accommodation pressure, so long walks should not fill the middle of the day. Around the Zhoushan Islands, autumn often offers clearer views, but cold fronts can produce strong winds. On Dongji, winter is quieter and much colder in exposed areas, while ferry, restaurant and guesthouse services may be reduced. For Dongji, a general 'best season' is less useful than the forecast and operating notice for your exact date.
At Dongfushan, treat sunrise as a weather-dependent bonus rather than a guaranteed product. On Dongfushan, cloud, fog and local closures can defeat even a carefully timed alarm. On Dongfushan, ask your host about the open route and surface conditions the night before. On Dongfushan, skip a distant viewpoint when the path is unlit, wet or exposed to strong wind.
3. Choose Between Miaozihu, Dongfushan and Qingbang
Miaozihu is the practical first base. Food, lodging and supplies are easiest to find near the harbor, and sections of Miaozihu Loop Road connect Dongji Fishing Port, the Caibogong Statue and local cultural displays. Treat Dongji Historical and Cultural Museum as an indoor substitute only after checking its same-day opening notice. A Miaozihu film location can add context, but it should never cost an inter-island connection. Exhibitions relating to the local rescue of Lisbon Maru prisoners may change their opening status or display arrangement, so consult the venue notice on the day.
Dongfushan is about coastal terrain, stone houses and the walk itself, rather than claims about China's 'first sunrise.' Xiangbi Peak and Dashuwan Stone Village are useful map labels for checking direction, but their presence on a map does not prove the entire path is open that day. Steps and gradients are significant, and a full circuit may be affected by weather, construction or closures. On Dongfushan, limited time favors an open near-village section with a clear turnaround point over an unfamiliar loop before a ferry.
On Qingbang, visitors encounter a compact fishing-village landscape, hillside stone houses and local memory associated with the wartime rescue. On Qingbang, the lanes lead to real homes rather than an empty film set. On Qingbang, ask before photographing residents, doors or courtyards. A short crossing does not mean boats run whenever you need them, so confirm the same-day return before treating Qingbang as an excursion.
Do not add Huangxing or another small island simply because an old blog or map names it. For Huangxing Island or another small island, confirm a licensed passenger service, visitor accommodation and a clearly open area for your dates. Across the East China Sea route, never replace a cancelled Dongji passenger ferry with an unlicensed fishing boat or private speedboat.
4. Workable Three- and Four-Day Itineraries
Conservative three-day plan: Arrive in Zhoushan on day one and stay near the confirmed mainland ferry terminal in Zhujiajian or Shenjiamen. Before travel from Zhujiajian or Shenjiamen, verify the terminal, identification requirements, weather and cancellation terms. On day two, take the ticketed ferry to Miaozihu, leave luggage at the guesthouse and walk the harbor area plus one section of the island road. On Miaozihu Island, finish any distant coastal walk before dusk. On day three, keep the Miaozihu morning local, return on the booked sailing and stay on Zhoushan Island.
Four days with Dongfushan: Use day one as the mainland buffer and day two for Miaozihu. On day three, take a confirmed inter-island ferry to Dongfushan, choose an open walk with a safe turnaround and stay overnight. From Dongfushan Harbor on day four, follow the current ticket and harbor instructions for the return. If the inter-island service is cancelled, remain on Miaozihu or return early; do not improvise a boat transfer.
Four days with Qingbang: Follow the same first two days, then move to Qingbang for a slow village and public-path walk. Confirm the room and meals before leaving Miaozihu. From Qingbang Harbor, return according to the current day-four service. Families, older travelers and anyone with a large bag can make Qingbang a day trip only when the outbound and return sailings are both confirmed.
Visiting Dongfushan and Qingbang deserves at least three island nights and a willingness to drop one island. Every Dongji itinerary should protect a final Zhoushan night, especially before a flight from Zhoushan Putuoshan Airport or a connection through Ningbo Railway Station.
5. Mainland Ferries, Island Transfers and Luggage
Use the passenger operator's official or clearly authorized channel to confirm the actual departure terminal, destination island, sailing date, cabin, identification rules, child policy, luggage limits and refund terms. Mainland departure arrangements for Dongji can change. If the current order names Zhujiajian Wugongzhi Passenger Terminal, enter that full label in the map; if it names another terminal, follow the order instead. Do not travel to a terminal based only on a past listing for Shenjiamen or Zhujiajian, and reconfirm the printed terminal shortly before travel. Treat any third-party bundle for Dongji cautiously if it does not identify the operator, cabin and cancellation conditions.
A mainland ticket from Zhoushan and an inter-island ticket within Dongji may be separate products, and the connection is not guaranteed. On arrival at Miaozihu, find out where and when the next ticket is sold and how the return works before walking away from the harbor. For boarding at Miaozihu, ignore past reports of onboard upgrades, cash-only sales or a fixed advance-sales period. If Dongji ferries are suspended, follow terminal instructions and retain operator notices, orders and guesthouse messages for refunds or insurance claims.
At Miaozihu Harbor and the outer-island piers, carry only what you can move over gangways, steps and slopes. Because spray is common on an East China Sea crossing, use a small water-resistant bag and seal documents, medication, power banks and dry clothes separately. Before a Dongji crossing, ask a clinician or pharmacist about motion-sickness medicine and interactions. On a passenger ferry from Zhoushan, follow assigned seating and life-saving equipment instructions throughout the crossing.
6. Where to Stay and What to Ask the Host
For the mainland buffer night, choose Zhujiajian or Shenjiamen according to the terminal on your order and the reliability of the transfer, not the view. Send the exact terminal name to the hotel before booking because a search for 'Dongji pier' can point to the wrong place.
On Miaozihu, the broader choice of rooms and restaurants makes it the easiest first night. At a guesthouse on Miaozihu, ask about the real harbor climb, luggage help, hot water, air conditioning and nighttime noise. A room marketed as sea-view on Dongfushan may be obstructed and does not necessarily face sunrise.
On Dongfushan or Qingbang, location and basic services matter more than decor. Before booking on Qingbang, confirm pier steps, bathroom type, utilities, mobile signal, meals and extension terms during a ferry suspension. During a wind or typhoon warning affecting the Zhoushan Islands, favor properties with written cancellation boundaries. A host's confident weather prediction is not a reason to buy a nonrefundable onward ticket.
7. Seafood, Drinking Water and Supplies
Menus change with visitor numbers, deliveries and fishing seasons. Before ordering seafood, establish the species, pricing unit, whether it is sold by weight or piece, preparation charge and estimated total. Watch the scale and keep the bill. Travelers with fish, shellfish or crustacean allergies should discuss cross-contact clearly. Raw, marinated or self-caught seafood can be particularly risky for children, pregnant travelers, older adults and people with weaker immunity.
Outer-island shops may close early or run out of basics. Carry enough water, simple food and essential personal items before boarding, without creating excessive waste. Fresh water and waste-processing capacity are limited. Use water carefully, carry a refillable bottle and take rubbish to designated collection points. Never leave wipes, cigarette ends or fishing line on the shore.
8. Booking Order, Budget and Cancellation Exposure
Check the marine outlook and operator notices first. Next, reserve a cancellable mainland room; then buy the named passenger ticket; finally confirm island accommodation and any inter-island segment. Reversing that order can turn a weather change into several nonrefundable losses. In busy periods, avoid strangers offering ticket-buying services and do not send identity-document images to an unverifiable personal account.
Budget separately for travel to Zhoushan, the mainland buffer hotel, mainland ferries, island ferries, island rooms, food and contingencies. Previously published fixed prices are not a reliable planning tool. Keep funds for an extra mainland night, a changed rail or air ticket and basic meals. Read insurance terms for ferry suspension, typhoon disruption, voluntary cancellation and pre-existing conditions, and note what official evidence a claim requires.
9. Coastal Walking, Safety and Community Boundaries
Reefs, breakwaters and closed shore sections are not viewpoints. Turn back when wind or surf rises, the surface becomes wet, daylight fades or a barrier is posted. Wear closed, grippy shoes and carry a headlamp, light rain layer and warm layer, while remembering that equipment cannot make a closed or dangerous path acceptable. Solo walkers should tell their host the route and expected return time and keep an offline map and emergency contacts.
For sunrise, stay on a route confirmed open and avoid unlit junctions, cliff edges and the front of private homes. Before any fishing trip, charter or sea activity, verify the operator, the vessel's permitted use, life jackets, insurance and cancellation policy. Never use a fishing boat or informal speedboat as a substitute for a suspended passenger ferry. In an emergency, contact local staff and the public emergency services rather than attempting a risky self-transfer.
Stone houses and working harbors remain community spaces. Ask before photographing people, drying food, interiors or ritual areas. Do not enter locked or marked private property, block harbor operations or handle fishing gear. At memorial displays related to shipwreck and rescue history, keep the visit respectful and avoid novelty poses.
10. Bad-Weather Alternatives and Final Checklist
If a suspension is announced before departure, stay on the Zhoushan mainland side rather than waiting at the terminal for a speculative extra sailing. Use Zhujiajian or Shenjiamen as a base and choose only museums, city walks or short coastal sections confirmed open that day. In severe wind or rain, the coast is not a safe fallback either. If you are already on an island, secure an extended room, drinking water and medication before rearranging onward travel.
Before leaving, check the terminal and check-in instructions printed on the order; whether mainland and inter-island segments are separately ticketed; valid identification for every traveler; marine warnings and ferry notices; the slope, pickup, meals and suspension policy at each guesthouse; flexibility in onward bookings; regular and motion-sickness medication; and grippy shoes, rain and sun protection, a headlamp and dry bag. If the return still depends on one unconfirmed sailing, remove another island from the plan.
