Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan Travel Guides

Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan travel guide index, organized by province with route planning, transport checks, food and lodging notes.

Choose a destination before combining trips

Use this hub to choose between the Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan guides, not as a ready-made itinerary linking all three. Check the entry conditions that apply to you before arranging accommodation and transport. Eligibility to enter one destination does not establish eligibility for another. Confirm document, transit and re-entry questions with the relevant immigration authorities; a travel guide cannot decide an individual case.

Harbour views, neighbourhoods and city attractions: start with Hong Kong

The Hong Kong Tourism Board groups neighbourhoods into Hong Kong Island, Kowloon, the New Territories and outlying islands. If your priorities are harbour walks, neighbourhood food, museums or theme parks, start with the Hong Kong guide and choose accommodation around your main activities.

Our planning suggestion is to group nearby stops before adding a harbour crossing. An island outing, hike or major theme park needs enough time for both the journey and the visit; being in Hong Kong does not make several such outings a sensible single day. Use the Hong Kong Tourism Board for neighbourhood information and event notices, then check bookings and transport with the operator concerned.

Heritage streets, Taipa and Coloane: start with Macao

Macao's tourism office offers separate walking themes for the central district's World Heritage sites, Taipa and Coloane. For architecture, local food and a slower city visit, begin with the Macao guide. Choose a main area for each day: the Macao Peninsula, Taipa and Cotai, or Coloane.

Put your accommodation, performances and meal reservations on one map rather than treating every area as a continuous walk. The peninsula's heritage streets and Cotai's resort area are different planning priorities. With children or older travellers, fewer area changes leave more room for breaks near the day's main activity. The Macao Government Tourism Office provides cultural-route and event information.

A regional trip at a slower pace: start with one part of Taiwan

Taiwan's tourism website groups destinations into northern, central, southern and eastern Taiwan and offshore islands. These categories help you choose a direction; they are not a checklist for a short holiday. Start with the Taiwan guide, establish your arrival and departure points, and choose one region or group of cities to focus on.

If you are interested in urban museums, neighbourhoods and food, begin with Taipei and nearby options rather than trying to combine both ends of the island, the east coast and offshore islands. Before adding an intercity leg, check stations, accommodation, luggage storage and the return journey. Do not add a mountain, coastal or island outing on map distance alone. Use the Taiwan tourism website for destination categories and transport information.

Three planning situations

Check in this order before booking

Establish your entry conditions first, then your arrival and departure points and workable transport. Next choose accommodation with acceptable cancellation terms, followed by museums, parks, meals and neighbourhood activities. When closures, weather or transport changes disrupt the plan, reduce transfers instead of letting non-refundable bookings force a rushed itinerary.

The three links below continue to destination-specific routes, accommodation and pre-trip checks. This hub does not determine anyone's permission to enter or provide live weather, fares or availability. Check those with the relevant official channels before booking and again before departure.
