If an entire checked bag does not appear after the flight arrives, do not treat it as an ordinary loose item lost in the terminal or leave and guess what happened. This guide covers an ordinary domestic arrival in mainland China where a whole checked bag is missing or delayed. The task is to verify the correct collection point, report the bag to the operating carrier or its ground handler, obtain a traceable record, and follow it until actual collection or delivery.

It does not cover damage, missing contents, compensation calculations, insurance, international deadlines, dangerous goods or legal responsibility. Property lost on a train or at a railway station belongs in the rail lost-property guide. A bag intentionally accepted for storage is a different handover covered by the luggage-storage guide.

1. Match the flight, bag and collection point

Keep the arrival airport and terminal, full date, flight number, passenger name, number of checked bags and each baggage-tag identifier available. If the destination printed on the baggage record does not clearly match the current collection arrangement, ask the carrier rather than following another traveller or assuming that a similar suitcase is yours.

Check the airport's official display or signs for the carousel assigned to the flight. The Beijing Capital International Airport arrivals guide says the carousel can be identified from the flight number on the display and directs baggage questions to the airline. The page shows no publication date and was checked on 26 September 2026. This article uses only that flight–carousel–carrier sequence, not its floor, counter, timing or charge information as a rule for other airports.

If the bag is absent, ask authorised staff whether it should appear at an oversize or other designated collection point, whether the carousel is still delivering bags, and where this flight's carrier or ground-handler baggage desk is located. Do not cross a barrier, enter a baggage-work area, follow staff through a controlled door or take a case merely because its colour looks right.

2. Report it before leaving the reclaim area

When the bag is still absent from the correct carousel and any other collection point confirmed by staff, approach the formal baggage-service desk for the operating carrier or its ground handler. If the route is unclear, ask an official airport information point. Do not follow an unverifiable person into a non-public area.

Prepare only the information needed for the report:

Complete the carrier's actual irregular-baggage record. Check the name, contact, tag, description and delivery address, if delivery is supported, before saving the reference number, acceptance time, official desk or channel, and enquiry method. Do not publish the full baggage barcode, identity document, phone number, address or case reference. A verbal “we know” is not the same as having a record that can be queried.

3. Keep tracing states separate

China Southern's domestic irregular-baggage page says that China Southern or its ground agent works with the passenger to complete an irregular-baggage record for delayed, lost or damaged baggage. The page shows no publication date used by this article and was checked on 26 September 2026.

That is one carrier's official workflow, not proof that every airline uses the same form, desk or tracking system. For another operating carrier, verify its current process or that of its actual ground handler. Keep at least these states separate:

“Possible match”, “located”, “handover in progress” and “address updated” do not mean received. Acceptance by the carrier or delivery provider and an in-transit update still do not put the bag in the collector's hands. No result today does not prove permanent loss. Update the original official record; do not open duplicates for the same bag unless the carrier instructs you to do so.

4. Invented example: a record is not the bag

Every airport, flight and identifier here is fictional. A traveller arrives at Airport A on invented domestic flight X123 with one blue hard-shell checked suitcase tagged TAG-DEMO-01. The display assigns Carousel B. An authorised member of staff confirms that the bag is not expected at a separate collection point, and the carousel finishes without it.

At the flight's baggage-service desk, the traveller privately presents the flight and tag details, describes the blue case, grey handle cover and side sticker, and gives a callback contact and next accommodation address. After checking the entry, the traveller receives invented reference CASE-DEMO-01. The status is “collection point checked; report opened; tracing”, not “bag found”.

Later, the official channel reports only a possible match. The traveller privately checks the tag and exterior details under the original record; only after the carrier confirms the match does the status become “located”. Updating the address, carrier acceptance, delivery-provider acceptance or an in-transit update still does not make it “received”. That status applies only after the traveller or a collector authorised under the carrier's process physically obtains and checks the case. The example represents no real flight, airport, delivery method, free service or tracing time.

5. Follow the original record after leaving

If staff confirm that the traveller may leave, save the report, enquiry channel and next follow-up time before arranging ground transport. The airport-to-hotel transport guide starts its comparison at landside arrivals. Time spent reporting the bag changes that start time, so recheck pickup windows, final services and late-arrival arrangements rather than keeping the old plan.

If the onward city, delivery address or callback number changes, update it through the carrier's official channel linked to the original report, then ask the representative to read back the updated details and confirm when they take effect. If the report could not be completed at the airport, contains an error, or follow-up later stops, confirm how to open, correct or resume it through the carrier's official site, app or customer service, or an official airport information service. Do not try to re-enter a controlled area, use another person's credentials or send identity and baggage-tag details to an unfamiliar number found in search results.

After the carrier confirms a match, verify the actual storage point, personal collection requirements, whether collection by an authorised person or delivery is supported, required records, service hours, all charges and address coverage. Leave every unknown pending. Do not assume free delivery, a standard tracing time, recovery or compensation. When the traveller or authorised collector receives the bag, check the baggage-tag identifier, number of bags and visible exterior only where it is safe to do so. Damage or missing-content disputes follow the carrier's separate process and are outside this guide.
